Chapter 2 - the hidden grotto 2

The light from the grotto hadn't just illuminated the cavern; it had changed something in the air. As Aryan and Zoya stepped out from the mountain's shadow, the world felt different. The "Freedom" of finishing the 10th boards now felt like a heavy responsibility.

The Mystery of the Stone

As they descended back toward Bhor, Aryan realized Zoya was unusually quiet. She kept touching the pocket of her trekking jacket.

"You took something, didn't you?" Aryan asked, his voice low.

Zoya stopped and pulled out a small, jagged shard of the turquoise crystal. It didn't just glow; it hummed with a low frequency that made the rainwater on her palm vibrate into tiny patterns. "It's not just quartz, Aryan. I've seen enough NEST prep material to know this shouldn't exist. The energy density is... impossible."

The Shadow in the Rain

Before Aryan could respond, a black SUV with tinted windows splashed through a deep puddle nearby, stopping abruptly on the narrow mud road. Two men in raincoats stepped out. They weren't trekkers. They looked like they belonged in a corporate boardroom, or a private lab.

"The resonance tracker led us here," one said, looking not at the teens, but at Zoya's pocket. "Hand over the sample, and we can forget you trespassed on private survey land."

The Great Escape

"Private? This is public forest!" Aryan stepped in front of Zoya. His heart was hammering—the same rhythm as the crystal.

"Run!" Zoya whispered.

They didn't head for the road. They dove into the thickest part of the scrub forest, where the SUV couldn't follow. The chase was a blur of thorns, mud, and the blinding grey sheet of the monsoon. Aryan used his knowledge of the local shortcuts—the "secret paths" he'd explored during summer breaks—to lead them toward the old abandoned railway tunnel.

The Revelation

Inside the dark tunnel, safe for the moment, Zoya held the crystal up. It was glowing brighter now, pulsing in time with her heartbeat.

"Aryan, these men... they aren't just surveyors. Look at the logo on their coats."

It was a stylized "X"—the mark of Star Corp, the massive conglomerate that funded half the competitive exam scholarships in the country.

"They aren't looking for minerals," Aryan realized, a chill running down his spine that had nothing to do with his wet clothes. "They're looking for a power source. If they find the grotto, they won't just study it. They'll strip the mountain bare."

The Pact

Zoya looked at the crystal, then at Aryan. The romantic spark from the cave had hardened into something like steel. They weren't just two students waiting for results anymore. They were the only ones who knew the location of the greatest discovery in the Sahyadris—and the only ones standing in the way of Star Corp.

"We can't go to the police," Zoya said. "They probably own the police. We need to hide this until we can get it to someone who can't be bought."

"My results come out in two weeks," Aryan said, a determined grin spreading across his face. "I guess we have plenty of time for a little 'extracurricular' work."

They bumped fists, the crystal glowing fiercely between them. The adventure hadn't ended at the grotto. It was just beginning
