Chapter 3 - the hidden grotto 3

The silence of the abandoned railway tunnel was broken by a mechanical hum—low, rhythmic, and chillingly close. It wasn't the wind. It was a drone.

A sleek, matte-black quadcopter hovered at the tunnel's entrance, its red "eye" scanning the darkness. Star X wasn't just a corporation; they were a surveillance empire.

The Digital Trap

"They've tagged our phones," Zoya hissed, her voice trembling. She ripped her battery out, but the drone didn't budge. It was tracking the frequency of the crystal shard in her pocket.

"The old Bhor power substation," Aryan whispered, his mind racing through the geography of the hills. "If we get there, the electromagnetic interference from the transformers might mask the crystal's signal. But we have to cross the Devil's Bridge."

The Devil's Bridge was a narrow, rusted iron walkway suspended sixty feet above a seasonal waterfall that was currently a roaring brown monster.

The Leap of Faith

They burst from the tunnel into the blinding rain. Behind them, the roar of a high-performance engine echoed. The SUV was back, tearing through the mud like a predator.

They reached the bridge. The iron groaned under their weight. Halfway across, a spotlight cut through the rain, pinning them like insects to a board.

"Stop!" a voice boomed from a megaphone. "That shard is unstable! You're carrying a localized tectonic trigger!"

Aryan looked at Zoya. "Is he lying?"

Zoya looked at the crystal. It wasn't just humming anymore; it was hot. The air around it was shimmering, distorting the rain into steam. "I don't know, Aryan! But if they get it, they control the trigger!"

The Extraction

Suddenly, the bridge buckled. A support cable snapped with the sound of a gunshot. Aryan grabbed the rusted railing with one hand and Zoya's jacket with the other as they swung over the churning abyss.

"Drop it!" the man from Star X yelled, stepping onto the edge of the gorge. He held a device that looked less like a camera and more like a weapon.

In that split second, the crystal in Zoya's pocket flared a brilliant, blinding violet. The drone spiraled out of control, crashing into the rocks. The SUV's electronics hissed and died, smoke pouring from the hood.

The Ghost in the Rain

Everything went black for a moment. When Aryan's vision cleared, a figure was standing at the far end of the bridge. It wasn't a Star X guard. It was a woman in a tattered yellow raincoat, her face obscured by the shadows of the storm.

"You found the Heart of the Sahyadri," she said, her voice cutting through the thunder like a blade. "But you weren't the first. And if you stay here, you'll be the last."

She held out a hand. "The results you're waiting for aren't coming by mail, kids. Your real test starts now."

Before they could ask who she was, a second SUV climbed the ridge behind them. They were trapped between a corporate army and a mysterious stranger on a collapsing bridge.

"Jump," the woman commanded.

"What?!" Aryan yelled.

"Into the falls. Trust the water, or trust the men with guns. Choose."

The bridge gave a final, sickening lurch. Aryan looked at Zoya. They didn't need words. They had survived the 10th boards, the landslide, and the grotto.

They gripped each other's hands, shut their eyes, and stepped into the void.
