Chapter 68 - The Aftermath

The battle ended.

Not with a glorious victory, not with a dramatic death. It ended with a handshake. With an ancient being of hunger and shadow accepting the possibility of peace.

The defenders of Last Light watched in disbelief as the Hollow King their enemy, their nightmare, the end of all things simply... sat down. He sat on the blood soaked ground, cross legged, like a child in a classroom, and closed his eyes.

"I will rest now," he said. "For a thousand years. Maybe longer. When I wake, the hunger will return. It always returns. But for now... for now, I will be still."

He faded not into darkness, but into shadow. The natural shadow of the world, the kind that appears when the sun sets and the moon rises. He became part of the world, part of the cycle, part of the balance.

Lee stood in the center of the battlefield, Dawnblade in hand, breathing hard.

"Did we win?" Kira asked, limping toward him.

"I don't know," Lee admitted. "I think... I think we changed something. The Hollow King isn't gone. He'll be back. But maybe... maybe next time, he'll be different."

"Or maybe we'll be different," Inyocha said. "Stronger. Wiser. More ready."

Ren joined them, his shadow form fading, his calm eyes warm with something that looked like hope. "The Hollow King is sleeping. The souls he consumed are free. The world can heal now."

"Can it?" Taro asked. "After everything that's happened?"

Ren looked at the sky at the new stars, bright and hopeful. "It can try. That's all any of us can do."

The defenders began to cheer. Not the wild cheers of victory, but the quiet cheers of survival. They had faced the end of the world and lived. That was enough.

For now.
