Chapter 1 - THE FIRST GLANCE

I am Ameliya Lawrence.

One of the richest heirs in the country.

A name people recognize. A presence people respect. A woman people think they understand.

Elegant. Calm. Poised.

Perfect.

That's what they see when they look at me.

A girl raised with discipline, grace, and quiet charm. Someone who speaks softly, walks carefully, and never crosses the invisible lines society draws for women like me.

They think I'm predictable.

They think I'm harmless.

They think I'm… shy.

I almost laugh every time I hear it.

Because if there's one thing I've mastered in my life—

It's control.

Control over my expressions.

Control over my thoughts.

Control over what people are allowed to see.

And the truth?

No one has ever seen the real me.

Not my family.

Not my friends.

Not even the people who think they know me best.

Because beneath the calm surface…

There's something else.

Something sharper.

Something dangerous.

A hunger for control.

A desire for something that isn't safe… or simple… or ordinary.

Something that could finally make my heart race.

That night was like every other night.

A grand party hosted by one of the elite families. Crystal chandeliers hanging above, casting golden light across the room. Soft music filling the air. Expensive perfumes blending into something almost intoxicating.

Fake smiles.

Carefully chosen words.

Perfectly played roles.

I stood beside my father, greeting guests, offering polite smiles, responding exactly the way I was expected to.

Flawless.

Controlled.

Untouchable.

But inside?

I was bored.

Completely, painfully bored.

Nothing here interested me.

Nothing here challenged me.

Nothing here… felt real.

Until—

I saw him.

Richard James.

The moment my eyes landed on him, something shifted.

Not in the room.

In me.

He stood across the hall, dressed in dark elegance, his presence quieter than most… yet far more powerful. People weren't gathered around him like they were around others.

They kept their distance.

And that alone said everything.

Power doesn't need attention.

It commands it.

I had heard of him, of course. Everyone had.

The only heir to one of the most powerful families in the country. Wealthy. Influential. Untouchable.

And dangerous.

There were whispers—always whispers.

About his connections.

About the kind of work his family was involved in.

About the things no one said out loud.

Mafia.

Dark dealings.

Control.

People feared him.

Avoided him.

Respected him… from a distance.

But as I watched him, I didn't feel fear.

Not even a little.

What I felt was something far more dangerous.

Interest.

My eyes lingered on him longer than they should have. Studying. Observing.

Understanding.

He didn't smile like the others.

Didn't pretend.

Didn't try to impress anyone.

He simply existed… like everything around him was beneath his attention.

And for the first time in a long time—

Something caught mine.

"Don't even think about it."

Chloe's voice broke through my thoughts.

I didn't look at her. "Think about what?"

She followed my gaze and sighed immediately. "Him. Richard James."

I finally turned slightly, raising an eyebrow.

"And?"

"And nothing," she said quickly. "You stay away from him."

A faint smile touched my lips. "Why?"

"Because he doesn't get involved with anyone," she replied. "Ever. And even if he did… he's not someone you play around with."

I looked back at him.

Still standing there.

Still distant.

Still untouchable.

"That sounds like a challenge," I murmured.

Chloe shook her head. "No. That sounds like a warning."

But warnings only matter…

When you're afraid of consequences.

And I wasn't.

As if sensing my gaze, he looked up.

Directly at me.

Our eyes met.

And for a moment—

Everything else disappeared.

No music.

No voices.

No people.

Just that one silent connection.

Sharp.

Intense.

Unspoken.

I didn't look away.

I held his gaze.

Calm.

Confident.

Unbothered.

And then—

I smiled.

Not politely.

Not shyly.

But slowly… deliberately.

A hint of something deeper.

Something he wouldn't expect.

Something real.

His expression didn't change much.

But I saw it.

That flicker.

That moment of curiosity.

That slight shift in his eyes.

And that was enough.

More than enough.

Because I knew exactly what that meant.

I turned away first.

Like it didn't matter.

Like he didn't matter.

Like it was nothing more than a passing moment.

But inside…

I had already decided.

Richard James wasn't just someone interesting.

He wasn't just someone dangerous.

He was something else entirely.

Something rare.

Something worth the effort.

And once I decide something…

I don't change my mind.

I don't hesitate.

I don't fail.

I simply…

Take what I want.

And this time—

What I wanted…

Was him.
