Chapter 2 - THE TEASE

The next evening, I didn't leave anything to chance.

Nothing about tonight was accidental.

From the moment I stood in front of the mirror, I knew exactly what I was doing. The dress clung to me perfectly—elegant, not obvious. Seductive, but controlled. My hair fell softly over my shoulders, framing my face just enough to soften the sharpness in my eyes.

Perfection… but not innocence.

Never innocence.

I applied my perfume last—light, barely noticeable, but unforgettable to anyone who came close enough.

And tonight… he would come close.

He had to.

When I entered the room, the familiar glow of chandeliers and low murmurs surrounded me. Laughter, music, the quiet clinking of glasses—it was all the same as every other night. Predictable.

Except for one thing.

Him.

Richard James stood across the room, dressed in dark elegance, his posture relaxed yet commanding. He didn't need attention… it followed him anyway.

Conversations seemed to shift around him, like people were careful not to cross an invisible line.

Power like that wasn't shown.

It was felt.

And just as I expected…

His eyes found me.

Instantly.

I didn't react.

I simply walked forward, slow, graceful, letting the room take me in while pretending I hadn't noticed the weight of his gaze. But I felt it—intense, curious, almost intrusive.

Good.

Let him look.

Let him wonder.

I paused near a group, exchanging polite words, offering soft smiles, playing the role everyone believed in. Calm. Elegant.

Untouchable.

But behind every movement…

I was aware of him.

Tracking me.

Watching.

Waiting.

After a few minutes, I let my eyes drift across the room—casual, uninterested… until they met his.

And this time, I didn't look away immediately.

I held his gaze.

One second.

Two.

Three.

Just enough to make it bold.

Just enough to leave a mark.

Then I turned away again, reaching for a glass like nothing had happened.

The corner of my lips curved slightly.

Hook set.

I moved toward the balcony, the air cooler, quieter… more intimate. The perfect place for the next step.

Because I knew something he didn't.

He would follow.

Not because I asked him to.

But because he wanted to.

And desire… is the easiest thing to control.

I stood there, my fingers lightly brushing the edge of the glass, my gaze fixed on the city lights outside. Calm. Patient.

Waiting.

Seconds passed.

Then—

"Miss Lawrence."

His voice.

Low. Controlled.

Exactly as I expected.

I turned slowly, letting a faint hint of surprise touch my expression. "Mr. James."

He stepped closer, his presence immediately shifting the air around us. There was something about him—something sharp, something dangerous—but I didn't move back.

I never would.

"You seem to appear everywhere I am," he said, his tone smooth, but edged with curiosity.

I tilted my head slightly, studying him like he was the one I couldn't quite understand. "Or maybe you're just noticing me now."

A brief pause.

His eyes darkened—not with anger… but interest.

"You're not what people say," he said.

"And what do they say?" I asked softly.

"That you're quiet. Reserved. Predictable."

I stepped a little closer—not enough to break boundaries, but enough to shift them.

"People only see what I allow them to," I murmured.

Silence followed.

But it wasn't empty.

It was heavy.

Charged.

For a moment, neither of us moved. His gaze held mine, searching, questioning… trying to understand something I had no intention of revealing.

He wasn't used to this.

To someone who didn't fold under his presence..

To someone who didn't try to impress him.

To someone who… played back.

I could feel it now.

That shift.

Curiosity turning into something deeper.

Something dangerous.

I stepped back first.

Because control… is knowing when to stop.

"Goodnight, Mr. James," I said softly, my voice calm, untouched by the tension between us.

And then I walked past him.

Slowly.

Gracefully.

Deliberately.

I didn't turn around.

I didn't need to.

Because I already knew…

This time, he wouldn't just watch me.

This time…

He would follow.

And just like that—

The game moved to the next level.
