Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The Strings She Pulled

The convent had returned to its usual rhythm.

Morning prayers. Quiet meals. Hours of chores and scripture study. To the other nuns, everything seemed normal again.

But for Christiana, something had changed.

She had discovered something powerful.

Power didn't always come from authority. Sometimes it came from knowing someone's weakness.

And she was beginning to believe she had found John's.

For the past few days, she had noticed how differently he behaved around her. His voice would stiffen when she spoke. His eyes would quickly look away whenever they met. During prayers, his attention would drift toward her before he forced himself to focus again.

Christiana noticed everything.

And the more she noticed, the more confident she became.

One afternoon, while the other sisters were in the garden tending to the flowers, Christiana walked slowly through the quiet corridor leading to the administrative wing of the convent.

At the end of the hall stood John's office.

She didn't knock immediately.

Instead, she leaned slightly against the wall, adjusting her veil as if she had all the time in the world. A small smile formed on her lips before she finally knocked on the door.

"Come in."

His voice sounded calm.

Christiana opened the door and stepped inside.

John sat behind his desk surrounded by books and papers. Sunlight filtered through the window behind him, lighting the room softly. When he looked up and saw who it was, his expression tightened slightly.

"Sister Christiana," he said carefully. "Is something wrong?"

She closed the door gently behind her.

"No," she replied casually. "Not at all."

She walked further into the room, her steps slow and confident.

"I just thought I should come and see you."

John leaned back slightly in his chair, studying her.

"You rarely visit my office," he said.

Christiana tilted her head slightly.

"Maybe I should start visiting more often."

For a brief moment, silence filled the room.

Then she walked closer to his desk.

"I actually came to ask for a small favor."

John's jaw tightened slightly.

"What kind of favor?"

She rested her hands lightly on the edge of the desk.

"There's a section of the convent library that is usually locked," she said smoothly. "I wanted permission to access it for my studies."

John knew exactly what section she meant.

That part of the building had fewer cameras and rarely had anyone passing through at night.

He looked at her carefully.

"Why would you need access to that area?"

Christiana shrugged lightly.

"I enjoy quiet places to read."

Their eyes locked.

Both of them knew that wasn't the real reason.

John exhaled slowly, rubbing his temples as if trying to clear his thoughts.

"You shouldn't be wandering around restricted areas," he said.

Christiana smiled softly.

"But you could allow it."

Her voice was calm, almost playful.

"And why would I do that?" he asked.

She leaned a little closer across the desk.

"Because you trust me."

The room grew quiet again.

John stared at her for a long moment.

Finally, he opened one of the drawers in his desk and pulled out a small key.

He placed it on the table between them.

"This is only for the library corridor," he said firmly. "Nothing else."

Christiana picked up the key slowly, her fingers brushing against the desk.

"Thank you, Father."

As she turned toward the door, she paused for a moment and glanced back at him.

"You're very kind to help me."

Then she left the office.

The door closed softly behind her.

John remained seated, staring at the empty doorway.

Something deep inside him knew he had just made a mistake.

Meanwhile, as Christiana walked down the hallway, she looked down at the key in her hand.

A satisfied smile spread across her face.

In her mind, everything was going exactly the way she wanted.

She believed she was the one pulling the strings.

But what she didn't realize yet…

Was that every dangerous game eventually reaches a point where control begins to
