The forest didn't feel the same anymore.
It looked the same—same glowing flowers, same silver light spilling through the trees—but something underneath it had shifted.
Like a smile that didn't reach the eyes.
Liora hated it.
"You're walking too loud," Kael muttered from somewhere behind her.
"I'm walking normally," she shot back, not even turning around. "Maybe YOU'RE just too sneaky."
"I am," he said.
…
She rolled her eyes. "That wasn't a compliment."
They hadn't separated.
Not officially.
No agreement, no "let's stick together."
They just… kept walking in the same direction.
Which was annoying.
And weird.
And slightly comforting
A low tremor ran through the ground.
Both of them froze.
"Tell me you felt that," Liora whispered.
"I felt it."
Another tremor.
Stronger.
The glowing mushrooms around them flickered—then dimmed.
Liora's tail sparked nervously. "That's new. I don't like new."
Kael stepped closer to her side, eyes scanning the trees. "Stay alert."
"Wow thanks, I was planning to take a nap actually—"
The ground split.
Right between them.
"KAEL—"
The earth cracked open with a sharp, tearing sound, roots snapping as something dark forced its way upward.
Not one shadow.
Many.
They spilled out like liquid night, twisting into shapes that almost looked like creatures—but wrong. Too long. Too jagged.
Liora stumbled back. "Oh that is SO MUCH WORSE—"
"Run," Kael said.
"Oh NOW you want to run?!"
"Run, Liora!"
They bolted.
This time, she didn't argue.
The forest blurred around them—trees flashing past, branches snapping underfoot.
Behind them, the shadows chased.
Fast.
Too fast.
Liora risked a glance back—and instantly regretted it.
"They're gaining—KAEL THEY'RE GAINING—"
"I know."
"WHY DO YOU ALWAYS SAY IT LIKE THAT—"
A shadow lunged, barely missing her tail.
She yelped, her glow flaring bright—
And the creature recoiled slightly.
Kael noticed immediately.
"Use it!" he called.
"I DON'T KNOW HOW—"
"Then figure it out!"
"OH OKAY SURE GREAT ADVICE—"
Another shadow surged forward—
Kael skidded to a stop, turning sharply. "This way!"
He darted off the main path, straight into thicker forest.
"THAT LOOKS WORSE—"
"Trust me!"
"…I DON'T—"
But she followed anyway.
The trees grew closer together, their branches tangling overhead until barely any moonlight got through.
Dark.
Too dark.
Even for Kael.
The shadows hesitated at the edge of it.
Then followed.
Liora's breathing came fast now. "We're not outrunning them—"
"We're not trying to."
She blinked. "WHAT—"
Kael stopped suddenly.
She nearly crashed into him again
"Kael—this is not the time for your mysterious plans—"
"Light," he said.
"…what?"
"Now, Liora."
Something in his voice—
steady. Certain.
She swallowed.
Her tail flickered weakly. "I can't just—turn it on like that—"
The shadows closed in.
Closer.
Closer.
Her heart pounded so loud she could barely hear anything else.
"I—"
She thought about the forest.
The way it used to feel.
Safe.
Alive.
She thought about losing it.
About that awful emptiness creeping in.
And then—
she thought about Kael.
Standing right in front of her.
Not running.
Not leaving.
Waiting.
Her tail ignited.
Light burst outward, flooding the dark space between the trees.
The shadows shrieked—twisting, pulling back, unraveling at the edges.
Kael moved instantly, his own shadow magic striking through them while they were weakened.
Light and shadow.
Together.
One by one—
the creatures dissolved.
Until there was nothing left.
Silence fell again.
But this time…
it felt like they had won something.
Even if just for a moment.
Liora stood there, glowing brightly, chest rising and falling.
"…okay," she panted. "That was… kinda cool."
Kael let out the smallest breath of a laugh.
"You're getting better."
She blinked. "Wait—was that a compliment?? Hold on, I need to write this down—"
"Don't ruin it."
"Too late "
Her glow slowly softened.
Not fading completely this time.
Just… steady.
Warm.
Kael glanced at her tail, then back at her.
"You didn't panic."
She shrugged, trying to play it off. "I mean, I did panic. Just… productively."
"…I noticed."
Their eyes met for a second.
And something there—
shifted.
Again.
But far away…
near the Heart Tree…
the darkness didn't retreat.
It gathered.
Growing.
Learning.
Waiting for the next time.
