Chapter 1 - The Night That Changed Everything

The night was too quiet.

Not the peaceful kind of quiet—but the kind that made your heartbeat louder than it should be.

Ava stood at the edge of the empty street, her fingers trembling slightly as she tightened her grip around her phone. The city, usually alive with noise and chaos, felt like it was holding its breath.

Something wasn't right.

And she could feel it.

A cold breeze brushed past her, sending a chill down her spine. She pulled her jacket closer, her eyes scanning the shadows as if they might come alive at any moment.

Then—

A sound.

Footsteps.

Slow. Measured. Dangerous.

Her breath caught.

"Don't turn around."

The voice was low. Calm. And terrifyingly close.

Ava froze.

Her mind screamed at her to run, but her body refused to move.

"W-who are you?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.

A soft chuckle echoed behind her.

"That's not the question you should be asking."

Her heart pounded harder.

"Then what should I ask?" she forced out.

A pause.

And then—

"Ask why you're already in danger."

Before she could react, a hand grabbed her wrist and pulled her into the darkness.

Everything happened too fast.

One second she was standing under the dim streetlight—

And the next, she was pressed against a wall, her breath stolen, her world spinning.

"Stay quiet if you want to live."

His voice was right next to her ear now.

Warm.

Steady.

And dangerously calm.

Ava's chest rose and fell rapidly as she tried to process what was happening. Her fear should have consumed her—but something else crept in instead.

Something unfamiliar.

Something… intense.

"Who are you?" she asked again, this time softer.

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, his grip on her loosened just enough for her to turn slightly.

And when she did—

Their eyes met.

Dark.

Deep.

Haunting.

It felt like looking into a storm you couldn't escape.

"I'm the reason you're still alive," he finally said.

In the distance, sirens began to echo through the empty streets.

Ava's eyes widened.

"What's going on?" she asked.

But he was already looking away, his expression shifting into something sharper. More dangerous.

"They're coming," he muttered.

"Who?"

He looked back at her.

And for a split second, something flickered in his eyes.

Not fear.

Not anger.

But something far more dangerous—

Care.

"You shouldn't have been here tonight," he said quietly.

Ava swallowed hard.

"Maybe," she replied, her voice trembling slightly, "but I am."

A faint smirk touched his lips.

And in that moment, despite everything—

The danger.

The fear.

The unknown—

Ava felt it.

That strange pull.

That reckless connection.

Like her life had just collided with something she would never escape from.

"Stay close to me," he said.

"Why?"

He stepped back, his eyes never leaving hers.

"Because loving me," he whispered, "might be the most dangerous thing you'll ever do."

And just like that—

The quiet night shattered.

And Ava's life… changed forever.
