Chapter 4 - The Moment You Realize It’s Too Late

The night refused to end.

Ava didn't sleep.

She couldn't.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw flashes—shadows chasing them, footsteps echoing behind, and those words—

"They saw you with me."

Now she was part of something she didn't understand.

Something she couldn't escape.

Rayan, on the other hand, looked like he belonged to the darkness.

He stood near the broken window, eyes fixed outside, body still—but alert. Like a predator waiting for the right moment.

"Do you ever relax?" Ava asked quietly.

He didn't look at her.

"No."

"Not even for a second?"

A pause.

Then—

"That's how people die."

Ava exhaled slowly.

"Comforting."

Minutes passed.

Or maybe hours.

Time didn't feel real anymore.

Then suddenly—

Rayan's posture changed.

Sharp.

Focused.

Dangerous.

"What?" Ava whispered, instantly on edge.

He raised a hand—signaling silence.

And then—

A sound.

Footsteps.

Outside.

Not one.

Not two.

Many.

Ava's heart started racing again.

"They found us?" she mouthed silently.

Rayan nodded once.

No fear.

Just certainty.

"Stay behind me," he whispered.

This time—

She didn't argue.

The door shook slightly.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

A loud bang.

Wood cracked.

Ava flinched.

"Rayan—"

"Quiet."

Another hit.

Stronger.

The door wouldn't last.

Rayan moved quickly.

Too quickly for her to fully follow.

From somewhere under his jacket—

He pulled out a gun.

Ava froze.

Her breath caught in her throat.

"You… you have a—"

"Now's not the time."

The third hit—

The door burst open.

Men rushed in.

Dark clothes.

Cold eyes.

Danger written all over them.

For a split second—

Everything went silent.

Then chaos exploded.

Gunshots.

Echoing through the empty building.

Ava covered her ears, crouching down as fear consumed her.

But her eyes—

Her eyes stayed on him.

Rayan moved like someone who had done this a hundred times.

Fast.

Precise.

Deadly.

One man fell.

Then another.

Ava's heart pounded harder with every second.

This wasn't survival.

This was war.

One of the men grabbed her arm suddenly.

Ava gasped, struggling.

"Let me go!"

Before she could react—

A shot rang out.

The man dropped instantly.

Rayan stood there—

Gun still raised.

Eyes locked on her.

"Did he hurt you?" he asked.

His voice—

Still calm.

Still steady.

Ava shook her head, unable to speak.

For a moment—

The chaos faded.

The danger disappeared.

It was just them.

Then reality crashed back in.

"More will come," Rayan said.

"We need to move."

Ava stared at him.

At the blood.

At the danger that followed him everywhere.

"You're not just running," she said slowly.

"You're fighting something."

He looked at her.

And this time—

He didn't hide it.

"They won't stop," he said.

"Not until I'm dead."

Ava's chest tightened.

"And now?"

A brief silence.

Then—

"They won't stop until you are either."

That was the moment.

The exact moment—

She realized the truth.

This wasn't just a bad night.

This wasn't just a mistake.

This was her life now.

And there was no way back.

Rayan stepped closer.

Held out his hand.

"Come with me," he said quietly.

Ava looked at his hand.

Then at his eyes.

Then at the broken door behind them.

Fear.

Danger.

Death.

And yet—

She stepped forward.

Placed her hand in his.

"Okay," she whispered.

Because somehow—

Walking away felt more dangerous than staying
