The six hours ended.
No sound. No warning. The stone door with the number "2" swung open. White light spilled out, then faded.
Shen stood up. His body was stiff. His left arm still hurts from the hallway traps. Behind him, Jiang, Zhou, Wang Long, and Liu Mei rose as well. Zhang's body lay near the entrance. No one looked at it.
"Let's go," Shen said.
He walked through the door.
The room beyond was not white. It was dark. Gray stone walls. A high ceiling lost in shadow. The air was cold and dry. In the center of the room, something stood.
A figure. Tall. Three meters at least. Human-shaped, but wrong. Its body was made of paper. Torn paper. Burned paper. Stained paper. Hundreds of paper faces pressed together. Eyes open. Mouths frozen in silent screams. Its lower body was like a spider—eight legs of twisted paper and bone. Its upper body was a man. No face. Just a smooth white mask with a crack down the middle.
It wasn't moving. Just standing. Waiting.
Jiang stepped in behind Shen. She stopped. Her voice was low.
"You see that?"
Shen nodded.
Zhou came next. Then Wang Long, limped. Then Liu Mei, holding her burned arm.
They all saw it.
"What is that thing?" Liu Mei whispered.
The guardian didn't answer. It just stood.
Then Shen's palm burned.
The upside-down triangle glowed red. Heat shot up his arm. A floating panel appeared in his mind. Blue light. Only he could see it.
Guardian of the Paper Doll Factory. HP: 500. Weakness: Core in chest. Three hits required. Abilities: Paper Storm. Poison Mist. Summon Remnants. Devour.
He blinked. The panel stayed.
"I see it," Shen said. "The mark. It shows me."
"What?" Jiang asked.
"It's a guardian. Five hundred health. Weakness is in its chest. A black heart. Takes three hits to destroy."
"Anything else?" Zhou asked.
"Paper storm. Poison mist. It can summon small ones. And devour."
Wang Long coughed. "How do we hit the heart?"
"Get close. Hit it three times."
The guardian moved.
No sound. No warning. One spider leg shot forward. Fast.
"Move!" Jiang shouted.
Shen dodged left. The leg hit the wall behind him. Stone cracked.
"Spread out!" Jiang yelled.
Shen ran right. Jiang went left. Zhou stayed center. Wang Long limped to the back. Liu Mei pressed against the wall.
The guardian raised two legs. Paper flew from its body. Sharp. Fast. A storm of paper shards.
Jiang ducked. A piece cut her arm. Blood. Zhou covered his face. Liu Mei screamed. A shard hit her burned arm. She fell.
Shen ran forward. Hook raised. He swung at the guardian's leg. The hook cut through paper. Black smoke sprayed out. The guardian pulled back. But the leg held.
"Too strong," Shen said.
The guardian opened its chest. Inside, a black heart. Beating. Glowing red.
"The core," Shen said. "I need to get close."
"How?" Zhou asked.
The guardian answered. It opened its mouth. Black mist poured out. Poison filled the room.
Wang Long coughed. The poison in his leg was already spreading. The mist pushed him back. He fell.
Liu Mei tried to run. The guardian's leg caught her. Wrapped around her waist. Lifted her.
"Help!" she screamed.
Shen ran. Hook cut the leg. Paper tore. But the guardian didn't let go. Another leg came. Wrapped around Liu Mei's chest.
She couldn't scream anymore.
The guardian pulled. Two legs. Tore her apart.
Blood sprayed on the floor.
Liu Mei's body fell in two pieces.
Jiang froze. "No…"
The guardian threw the pieces aside. Turned to Shen.
Shen's face didn't change. But his hand tightened on the hook.
"Now," he said. "While it's open."
The guardian's chest was still open. The black heart pulsed.
Shen ran. Jumped onto a spider's leg. Used it to climb. The guardian shook. Tried to throw him off. Shen held on. Hook dug into the paper.
He reached the chest. Swung.
The hook hit the heart. Once.
The guardian screamed. A sound like tearing paper. It threw Shen off. He hit the wall. Pain in his ribs.
"One hit," Jiang said. "Two more."
The guardian closed its chest. The mask turned to Jiang. It raised two legs. Stabbed down.
She rolled. The legs hit the floor. Cracks spread.
Zhou threw his lighter. It hit the guardian's face. The paper caught fire. The guardian flailed. The fire spread to its shoulder.
"Keep burning it!" Jiang shouted.
But the fire died fast. The guardian's body was damp. Poison.
Wang Long was on his knees. His face was white. The poison in his leg had reached his heart. He knew he had minutes.
"Shen," he called.
Shen looked.
Wang Long pointed at the guardian. "Get on its back. I'll hold it."
"You can't," Shen said.
"I'm already dead." Wang Long smiled. Blood on his teeth. "Just do it."
He stood up. Limped toward the guardian. The guardian saw him. Raised a leg to strike.
Wang Long grabbed the leg. Held it. His arms shook. His body shook.
"Now!"
Shen ran. Climbed the guardian's back. The guardian tried to shake him off. But Wang Long held the leg. Wouldn't let go.
The guardian's other legs tore into Wang Long. Paper claws cut his back. His arms. His chest.
He didn't let go.
Shen reached the chest. The guardian opened it. The black heart pulsed.
Shen swung. Second hit.
The guardian screamed again. Threw Wang Long off. He flew across the room. Hit the wall. Slid down. Didn't move.
Shen fell too. Landed hard. His arm twisted under him. Pain.
"One more," Jiang said. "One more hit."
The guardian was weak. Its legs wobbled. The fire on its shoulder spread again. It tried to close its chest. But the heart was too slow.
Shen pushed himself up. His left arm hung wrong. Broken. He held the hook in his right hand.
The guardian turned to him. Raised its last good leg.
Shen didn't wait. He ran. Straight at the guardian. The leg came down. He slid under it. Hook up.
The hook went into the heart.
Third hit.
The heart burst. Black liquid sprayed. The guardian froze. Its mask cracked. The crack spread. Down its body. Across its legs.
It fell apart. Paper by paper. Piece by piece. Each piece burned. Ash filled the room.
Then silence.
Shen stood over the ash. Breathing hard. His arm hung limp. His ribs hurt.
Jiang walked to Wang Long. He was against the wall. Eyes open. Not breathing.
She touched his neck. Shook her head.
Zhou sat down. Lit a cigarette. His hands were shaking.
Liu Mei's body was in two pieces near the wall. Blood everywhere.
Only three left. Shen. Jiang. Zhou.
Shen walked to Wang Long. Knelt. Wang Long's hand was open. Empty. The coin was already in Shen's pocket.
"I'll find her," Shen said. Quiet.
He closed Wang Long's eyes.
A stone panel rose from the floor in the center of the room. On it, a single black shard. It pulsed with dark light.
Jiang picked it up. "What's this?"
The wall glowed.
"GUARDIAN CORE SHARD. RARE MATERIAL. CAN BE EXCHANGED FOR HIGH-LEVEL REWARDS IN FUTURE DOORS."
"We keep it," Shen said.
Jiang put it in her pocket.
The wall glowed again.
"REWARD ROOM OPEN."
A new door appeared. White light poured through.
They stepped through.
The room was white. No walls. No ceiling. Just white. A stone table stood in the center. Empty.
The wall glowed.
"FIRST DOOR: PAPER DOLL FACTORY. COMPLETED. SURVIVORS: THREE. EVALUATION: TRAGIC VICTORY."
"Three," Zhou said. He lit another cigarette.
The wall added:
REWARD CALCULATION

· First completion bonus (team): +2 fragments
· Hidden rule discovered (bones in dolls): +1 fragment
· Total reward: 6 bone fragments
Six white bones appeared on the table. They glowed faintly, then faded to normal.
Shen looked at them. "Team pool?"
"Yes," the wall said. "These fragments belong to the group. Spend together."
Jiang counted. "Six. Enough for something good."
Then, in front of each of them, a floating screen appeared. Holographic. Blue light. Only the person could see their own screen, but the same list was visible to all.
Shen stared at his. It lists items in columns. Fragment cost on the right.

Zhou grunted. "Six fragments. What do we need?"
Jiang looked at the Spirit Iron Dagger. "That's three. I need a real weapon." Then she looked at the Seeker's Compass. "And that's three. It can help us find Wang Long's daughter."
"We can only buy one," Zhou said.
"No," Shen said. "We buy both. Six fragments. All on Jiang."
"You don't want anything?" Jiang asked.
"I have my hook. You take the dagger and the compass."
Jiang nodded. She touched her screen. "Spirit Iron Dagger. And Seeker's Compass."
Three fragments faded. A black blade appeared. Red veins. It hummed faintly. Then three more fragments faded. A small brass compass appeared. Its needle spun wildly, then stopped.
Jiang picked up the dagger. "Light. Feels… hungry." Then she took the compass. "How does it work?"
"Hold it. Picture a person you have met. The needle points toward them. The range is one kilometer."
She pictured Wang Long's face. The needle didn't move. "He's dead."
"Picture his daughter," Shen said.
"I never met her."
"Then picture her name. Or the eastern floating market."
Jiang closed her eyes. She pictured a girl, fifteen, with dark hair, selling fish. The needle twitched. Then it pointed east.
"It works," she said.
The wall glowed again.
"REWARD ROOM CLOSES IN SIXTY SECONDS. YOU WILL BE SENT BACK TO YOUR STARTING LOCATIONS."
Shen turned to Jiang. "When we get back, we meet. I need to find Wang Mei with you."
"How will we find each other?" Jiang asked.
"We need a way to talk."
Zhou pulled out a small notebook from his pocket. Tore out a page. Wrote something. Handed it to Shen. "My contact. Radio frequency. I live in the south of the floating market. Call me if you need."
Shen took it. Looked at Jiang.
She took out a piece of cloth from her pocket. Ripped a strip. Used a burned stick from the floor to write a string of numbers. Handed it to Shen. "My bunker. East side of the central ruin. Knock three times, wait, knock twice."
Shen took it. He had nothing to give. "I live in Ferrytown. The old dive shop near the river. Everyone knows it."
Jiang nodded. "Thirty days. But I'll find Wang Mei first. Then I'll come to you."
"We need to rest first," Shen said.
The light grew brighter.
"See you in thirty days," Zhou said.
The light swallowed them.
Shen opened his eyes.
He was on the floor of his room. The chair was tipped over. The cup of water was spilled. He had been gone for seven days. His body was sore. His arm hurt. His palm still had the triangle mark. Dark red now.
He stood up. Looked out the window. The same broken street. The same empty buildings.
He touched the triangle mark. It pulsed. Warm.
Thirty days.
He looked at the cloth strip with Jiang's contact. He put it in his pocket next to Zhou's paper.
Then he sat on his bed. Opened his father's notebook. Flipped to the last page. A new line had appeared, written in faint ink:
"The second door is hungry. Don't eat what it offers."
He stared at the words. Then he put the notebook away.
His palm burned again.
The triangle mark glowed red. A floating panel appeared in front of his eyes. Blue text. Only he could see it.
FIRST DOOR COMPLETE.
SYSTEM REWARD UNLOCKED.
Passive Skill: Observation – Automatically detects weak points and hidden traps. Always active.
Active Skill: Surge – Increases all physical stats (strength, speed, endurance, constitution) by 10% for 60 seconds. Cooldown: 1 hour.
Physical Enhancement – Strength, speed, endurance, and constitution are permanently increased.
The text faded. The mark stopped glowing. But Shen felt different. His body felt lighter. His broken arm didn't hurt as much. He made a fist. Stronger.
He didn't know what "stats" meant. But he understood the gift.
Outside, the wind picked up. Somewhere in the distance, a dog barked.
Shen lay down. He didn't sleep. He thought about Wang Long's daughter. About the compass in Jiang's hand. About the thirty days.
Tomorrow, he would go to the east side of the central ruin. He would knock three times, wait, knock twice.
And the real world would begin.
