The forest exploded into chaos the second the World Announcement faded from the sky.
Horns blared from Valoria Academy like war trumpets. Purple searchlights swept the treetops. Kai could already hear the thunder of boots and the crackle of magic as elite pursuit squads poured out of the gates. Elara's voice rang out above the rest, cold and furious.
Find the Fatebreaker! Bring me his head or the System's reward is mine!
Lyra spun her flaming axes, eyes blazing with savage delight and pure rage. You fucking idiot! she snarled at Kai, shoving him hard toward the thicker woods. That announcement just made every bounty hunter on the continent thirsty for your blood! And now Elara is leading the charge? I should kill you myself and collect the million gold!
Kai laughed even as he Shadow Stepped beside her, dodging an incoming fireball from a distant mage squad. You're welcome, Lioness. Now they all know my name. And yours is tied to mine whether you like it or not.
I hate you! Lyra roared, chopping a low-hanging branch in half as they sprinted. I hate your smug face! I hate that stupid purple glow in your eyes! But if we die here because of your dramatic bullshit, I'm haunting you in the afterlife!
They burst out of the forest into the academy's outer residential district — a maze of noble villas and training barracks. Lyra didn't slow down. She grabbed Kai by the wrist and yanked him down a narrow alley between two stone buildings.
This way, trash! My private training quarters are just ahead. No one knows about the hidden room except me.
A squad of five academy knights rounded the corner ahead, swords drawn and glowing with anti-fate runes. The leader spotted them and shouted.
There! The Fatebreaker and the Voss traitor!
Lyra didn't hesitate. She charged straight at them like a crimson comet. War God's Fury surged through her veins. Her axes became blurs of flame and steel. The first knight's shield shattered on impact. The second lost an arm in a single swing. Blood sprayed across the alley walls.
Kai appeared in their midst with Shadow Step, fate threads whipping out like violet whips. One knight tripped as if destiny itself had yanked his ankle. Another's sword suddenly turned on its owner. He moved like a ghost, punching through armor with raw power while keeping one eye on Lyra.
She was magnificent in her rage — ponytail flying, muscles flexing, cursing with every strike. I don't need your help! she screamed at him mid-battle, axe cleaving a knight in two. Stop showing off, pretty boy! You're distracting me!
You're the one staring at my ass while fighting, Kai shot back with a grin, ducking under a sword and kicking a knight into Lyra's path so she could finish him.
She caught the man and decapitated him in one fluid motion, then glared at Kai with pure hatred and something much hotter. I hate you so much right now…
They finished the squad in under thirty seconds. Lyra was breathing hard, covered in blood and sweat, her uniform torn even more. She grabbed Kai by the collar and dragged him toward a plain-looking storage door at the back of a villa.
Inside. Now. Before more come.
The door opened into a small, dimly lit training room filled with weapon racks and heavy bags. Lyra slammed it shut, then pressed her palm to a hidden rune on the wall. A section of the floor slid open, revealing stairs leading down to a secret underground chamber.
They descended quickly. The hidden room was surprisingly spacious — stone walls covered in battle scars, a large bed in one corner, a desk piled with maps and spare axes, and a single glowing lantern. It smelled like sweat, steel, and Lyra's fiery perfume.
Lyra sealed the entrance with another rune. The sounds of pursuit faded above them.
For a moment the room was dead silent except for their heavy breathing.
Then Lyra rounded on him like a predator.
You absolute fucking disaster, she hissed, stalking forward until her chest was almost pressed against his. That announcement painted a target on my back too! My father is going to disown me. Elara is going to try to kill me personally. And you're standing here smiling like you just won the lottery!
Kai didn't back away. He met her glare with that same dangerous smirk, purple eyes glowing softly in the low light. You could have run the second the announcement hit. But you stayed. You fought with me. You dragged me here. Face it, Lioness. You hate me… but you want me more.
Lyra's breath caught. Her hands fisted in his torn shirt, yanking him down so their faces were inches apart. Her crimson eyes burned with fury and raw, electric hunger.
I hate you, she whispered fiercely. I hate your voice. I hate how you look at me like I'm already yours. I hate that my bloodline is screaming to claim you right now. She shoved him backward until his back hit the stone wall, but she didn't let go. Her body was flush against his, heat radiating between them like a furnace.
Kai's hands settled on her waist, fingers digging in just enough to make her shiver. Then stop fighting it, he murmured, voice low and rough. You want to bite me? Bite. You want to burn me? Burn. But you're not leaving this room until you admit you're mine.
Lyra's lips hovered dangerously close to his. Her breathing was ragged. For the first time, the hate in her eyes mixed with pure, undeniable desire. She leaned in, almost closing the gap, her mouth brushing his as she growled.
I'll never admit that, you arrogant bastard. But right now… I want to hate-fuck you so hard the entire continent hears us.
Their lips were a heartbeat away from crashing together when heavy footsteps suddenly thundered right above the hidden entrance.
The rune on the door glowed red. A familiar cold voice echoed through the stone.
Lyra Voss! I know you're down there with him. Open this door or I'll burn the entire villa to the ground!
Elara.
Lyra froze, eyes widening in pure fury. She shoved Kai toward the bed and hissed under her breath.
Hide under the covers. Now. I'll distract her. If she sees you here, we're both dead.
Kai raised an eyebrow, still breathing hard from the almost-kiss. You're saving me?
Shut up and get in the damn bed! Lyra snapped, face flushed with frustration and leftover heat. She grabbed a towel, wiped the blood from her face, and stormed up the stairs.
The hidden door slid open. Elara stood there in full battle regalia, silver hair glowing under the lantern light, eyes blazing with jealousy and rage. Behind her were six elite knights.
Lyra leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, looking every bit the arrogant lioness.
What the hell do you want, ice princess? she sneered. Looking for your ex-fiancé? Sorry, I haven't seen the trash. Now get off my property before I decide your pretty face looks better with an axe through it.
Elara's gaze swept the room suspiciously. The World Announcement named you as one of his bonded. Don't play games with me, Voss. Hand him over and maybe I'll let your family keep their titles.
Lyra laughed — sharp, charismatic, and full of venom. Bonded? Please. I'd rather die than let that smug bastard touch me. She stepped forward, blocking the stairs completely, axes still strapped to her back. But if you want to search my room… go ahead. Just know that if you touch anything of mine, I'll make sure your precious prophecy ends with you bleeding out on my floor.
Elara hesitated, clearly sensing the murderous intent rolling off Lyra. The two women stared each other down like two storms about to collide.
Down below in the hidden chamber, Kai lay under the covers of Lyra's bed, heart pounding, lips still tingling from the almost-kiss that had been ripped away.
The chemistry between them was already a wildfire.
And Elara's interruption had only poured gasoline on it.
