The first stretch of the climb was deceptive. The trees were thicker than those near Viridian Forest, their trunks broader and bark darker, roots coiling over stone like sleeping Onix. The air felt heavier the higher they ascended—not thin like normal mountains, but dense, saturated with unseen energy.
Madam walked several paces ahead, Arcanine pacing beside her with a light stride. Butterfree hovered lazily near the rear, periodically releasing Sweet Scent in controlled bursts to draw challengers without overwhelming them.
Electabuzz walked at Silas' right side now, taller and broader than Elekid had been. Sparks crackled faintly around its shoulders but did not lash wildly.
Monferno bounced lightly on the balls of its feet, tail flame steady, eyes sharp.
The first wild Pokémon appeared before noon. A Heracross descended in a sudden dive. It wasn't reckless, it was probing potential prey.
"Electabuzz," Silas said calmly.
Charge Beam struck cleanly, blasting the Heracross mid-flight before it could adjust. A follow-up Thunder Punch ended the exchange before the bug could retreat.
Jolteon had taught Electabuzz Charge Beam. This would give Electabuzz a way to reliably increase its firepower.
They did not travel another hundred meters before the next encounter—a Noctowl that tried to ambush from above. It attacked silently. Talented Noctowl have mastered a skill that allows them to fly silently.
Monferno intercepted mid-air with Acrobatics, striking the owl's flank and twisting in the air to land cleanly.
The battles were different here.
No wasted movement. No theatrical roaring. The wild Pokémon of Mount Silver fought like well trained pokemon. They knew their natural advantages and played into them.
By late afternoon, they had faced a Graveler at level 34, a Heracross at level 36, and a surprisingly disciplined Ursaring that disengaged the moment it calculated disadvantage.
Silas wiped sweat from his brow. "They don't chase if they can't win."
"They don't need to," Madam replied. "The mountain feeds them regardless."
Electabuzz and Monferno were breathing heavier now, but neither complained. Froakie remained within the Heal Ball except for brief meals and stretches.
As the second day passed, Monferno began to change.
It wasn't dramatic at first. Just a difference in tempo.
Its Flame Wheel burned tighter. Its Aura Sphere compressed faster. Its footwork sharpened as if the ground itself were teaching it balance.
They were ambushed near a rocky incline by a pair of Primeape—both level 33. Unlike their lower-level cousins, these did not charge blindly. They circled and feinted but Monferno didn't fall into their traps.
The first Primeape lunged, fist glowing. Monferno met it head-on with Mach Punch, the collision sounding like thunder. The second Primeape came from behind but Electabuzz intercepted with Cross Chop, driving it into a tree. It was a critical hit, Primeape got back up but was visibly in pain.
Monferno exhaled sharply and reset its stance. Its eyes narrowed and an Aura Sphere formed. It was the normal size but then Monferno condensed the sphere. He fired the attack. When it made contact with the Primeape, it generated a massive explosion, about double the size its normal Aura Sphere could muster.
The first Primeape broke through the edge of the blast, closing distance.
Monferno didn't retreat. Flamethrower burst forward, not the weak stream from before. A clean, focused jet of fire that drove Primeape backward in a streak of scorched fur.
The second Primeape had taken the brunt of the condensed Aura Sphere and it was struggling to stand.
Electabuzz grabbed it and slammed it down with raw physical dominance. Then Electabuzz used Charge Beam at close range to finish it off.
Monferno's aura flared and it finished the other Primeape with a well aimed Mach Punch.
Even without the system, Sylas could tell that Monferno had broken through to level 30.
Monferno's body surged with heat, tail flame flaring brighter and longer. Its breathing steadied instead of quickening. The Aura Sphere in its palm no longer trembled—it rotated smoothly, obedient.
Silas felt it. Monferno's aura power had gone through a qualitative leap
Monferno roared victoriously.
The Primeape pair retreated without further challenge.
Madam watched quietly. "Both of your pokemon have broken the first plateau," she said. "Enjoy it. The next climb will be slower."
Silas nodded. He had already felt it with Electabuzz. Growth no longer came in bursts. It would have to be carved out.
By the fourth day, the trees thinned and stone dominated the landscape. Jagged rock faces rose in uneven spines, and the wind carried a colder bite. They reached the mouth of a cave just before dusk. It was enormous.
Mountains in the Pokémon world were rarely solid stone monoliths. They were ecosystems layered vertically—hollows, caverns, underground streams, mineral pockets, geothermal vents. Entire species thrived where sunlight barely reached.
"More variety means more danger," Silas murmured.
"And more opportunity," Madam replied. They entered cautiously.
The temperature dropped instantly. Moisture clung to the walls, and the ceiling stretched high enough that the beam from Silas' flashlight barely touched it.
The cave was alive. Tiny sounds echoed; drips, wingbeats, the distant shifting of claws on stone.
Then, a gust of wind inside an enclosed space. Silas' eyes snapped upward.
A Zubat dove down at him..
Electabuzz moved instinctively, but Silas held up a hand. "Wait."
The Zubat didn't screech randomly. It banked sharply and rode an unseen current of air through the cavern, then circled again.
The Zubat's wings snapped with flying type energy abundant. This was Tailwind. The air behind it twisted, accelerating its movement.
Silas' eyebrows rose.
The Zubat then folded its wings and dropped in a steep dive. For a split second, it looked wrong.
Not a standard Wing Attack or Aerial Ace. The dive was too direct, too heavy. It pulled up at the last moment, wind pressure cracking against the stone floor.
Brave Bird.
Silas stared.
"That's not normal," he muttered.
A Zubat knowing Brave Bird and Tailwind? That wasn't common inheritance. That was either rare breeding or extremely high combat exposure.
The Zubat hovered again, tilting its head slightly.
Silas grinned.
"I like you."
Monferno leapt upward to intercept the next dive, deflecting the momentum without burning the bat. Electabuzz released a carefully measured Thunder Shock—not full power, just enough to disrupt flight.
The Zubat twisted mid-air, adjusting with Tailwind again, trying to disengage.
"Not happening," Silas said.
A quick Vacuum Wave clipped its wing.
The Zubat tumbled, hit the cave floor, and tried to fly again but got hit with a Great Ball.
Silas exhaled.
Behind them, screeches erupted. 4 more Zubat and 2 Golbat burst from the cavern ceiling, furious at the capture.
Electabuzz stepped forward without waiting.
Thunder Shock rippled outward, catching the leading Golbat mid-charge. Monferno followed with a controlled Flamethrower.
The confined space amplified the sound of impact. One Golbat attempted to use Confuse Ray.
Electabuzz roared and released Thunder Shock at controlled radius. All 6 pokemon suffered significant damage under the fire power of higher leveled pokemon. .
Silas worked quickly, throwing Poké Balls methodically. One Golbat broke free and was subdued again by Cross Chop.
Within minutes, silence returned. 6 new captures lay secured. Silas wiped dust from his hands and laughed under his breath. "Cave tourism is productive."
Madam glanced at him sideways. "You're enjoying this."
"Just a little, capturing a variety of pokemon is step 1."
Madam gave Silas a meaningful look but didn't press for additional information. They camped deeper inside that night, choosing a dry shelf of stone overlooking a lower cavern.
Electabuzz and Monferno took turns keeping watch. Froakie was released briefly to stretch, its frubbles fluttering softly in the cave breeze. Silas sat cross-legged, reviewing the day's gains.
2 Pokémon had reached level 30, 6 new captures, and a mountain of opportunity still ahead of them.
Silas all of a sudden heard a voice.
"System Update: 100%"
For a brief moment, nothing happened. Then the familiar mechanical tone in his head dissolved. It was replaced by a measured but almost childish voice.
"Good evening, Host Silas."
Silas froze. Monferno tilted its head while looking strangely at his trainer.
The voice continued calm and clear inside his mind. "I apologize for the delay. Initialization complete."
Silas' pulse quickened. This was not the same monotone system prompt. This was true awareness,
