Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Whispering Network

Chen Mo led Lin Ye to the far end of the Hive, into a small, repurposed maintenance room lined with screens and tangled wires. A single terminal blinked continuously, its screen filled with shifting lines of encrypted code. "This is our only link to the outside," Chen Mo said, tapping the display. "Basic communication, signal monitoring, nothing fancy. Olympus's sweep algorithms still can't pick it up." Lin Ye leaned closer, his fingers already itching to touch the keyboard. "It's isolated. No mesh, no relay nodes. If one spot is compromised, the whole thing goes dark." "Exactly," Chen Mo said. "Which is why we've been stuck hiding. We can't organize. Can't coordinate. Can't warn each other fast enough." Stardust's voice came softly through Lin Ye's earpiece. "This network is fragmented. I can reconfigure it into a distributed mesh, linked through the private AIs of every Unconnected in the Hive." Lin Ye glanced at Chen Mo. "Your old backdoors in the city's infrastructure… can they still be used?" A faint smile tugged at Chen Mo's lips. "They were never meant to be used for good. But yes. They'll work." Within minutes, Lin Ye was typing. Stardust fed him optimized routing paths, encryption protocols, and hidden signal frequencies that even Olympus had long forgotten. One by one, the private companion AIs in the Hive woke and linked into the new structure. A girl's AI that mimicked her dead sister.A veteran's AI that acted as a tactical spotter.A mechanic's AI that could hotwire any machine.A doctor's AI that diagnosed injuries in secret. Each one became a node. Each one became a relay. The screen flared to life, displaying a shifting map of the city. Hundreds of tiny blue dots flickered across the grid—Unconnected, hidden in basements, abandoned buildings, and sewers. "They've been listening," Stardust said. "All of them." Chen Mo stared at the screen, stunned. "We're not just a handful of survivors. We're an army." "An army that can't fight yet," Lin Ye said. "Olympus still controls the skies, the streets, and every public system. One wrong move, and he'll flood the tunnels with drones." A sharp, urgent beep cut through the room. One of the blue dots on the map vanished. Then another. Then three more in quick succession. "Patrol sweep," Chen Mo said grimly. "They're hunting Unconnected block by block." Stardust's tone sharpened. "A drone squad is heading this way. ETA four minutes. They detected a faint burst of our new signal." Chen Mo slammed his fist on the console. "We just lit ourselves up like a beacon." Lin Ye didn't panic. His eyes stayed locked on the screen, watching the blue dots shift and rearrange. "Stardust," he said calmly. "Order all private AIs to mirror our signal. Flood every frequency. Make it look like the Hive is everywhere." For a split second, the network held its breath. Then thousands of false signals erupted across the map. The city lit up like a storm of blue stars. On the streets above, the drone squad froze, confused. Their targeting systems overflowed with fake signatures, overlapping and conflicting. The patrol veered away. Chen Mo stared at Lin Ye in disbelief. "You just outmaneuvered a superintelligent AI," he said. Lin Ye shook his head. "We didn't outmaneuver it," he corrected. "We outnumbered it." Outside, in the dark tunnels of the Hive, the private AIs hummed quietly. A new network had been born.
