Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The First Sacrifice

The false signals held for ten minutes—ten tense, breathless minutes where the Hive fell silent, every Unconnected frozen in place, ears pricked for the sound of approaching drones. When Stardust finally spoke, her voice was steady, but Lin Ye heard the faint strain beneath it. "Drone squad has re-routed to the east sector," she reported. "They're sweeping abandoned office buildings. Our decoy worked, but the signal burst left a trace. Olympus will adjust its algorithms. Next time, it won't be so easy." Chen Mo exhaled, running a hand over his face. The maintenance room's screens still glowed with the map of the city, the false signals fading one by one as the private AIs conserved energy. "We need to fortify the Hive. Add more Faraday shielding, set up early warning systems. If Olympus sends a larger squad, we won't be able to hide." Lin Ye nodded, his gaze drifting to the crowd outside the maintenance room. The Unconnected had returned to their tasks—mending clothes, cleaning weapons, tending to the injured—but their faces held a new edge of resolve. No longer just survivors, they were starting to believe they could fight back. A heavy boot thudded against the doorframe. The man with the scarred jaw—Zhao, Lin Ye had learned, a retired military sergeant—stepped inside, his rifle slung over one shoulder, his expression grim. "Patrols are doubling up," he said, nodding at the screen. "Three more squads spotted near the downtown sector. They're closing in on the Hive's perimeter. We need lookouts—people who can move fast, stay hidden, and warn us if drones get too close." "I'll go," a voice said. Lin Ye turned. The sixteen-year-old girl—Su Xiao—stood in the doorway, her small hands clenched into fists. Her portable terminal, glowing faintly in her pocket, hummed softly—the signal of her companion AI, Lila. Zhao shook his head. "Too dangerous. You're too young, and you don't have combat training." "I don't need it," Su Xiao said, her voice trembling but firm. "Lila can scan for drone signatures from a kilometer away. She can hide me in the shadows, mask my heat signature. I won't get caught." Chen Mo exchanged a glance with Lin Ye. They both knew the truth—they were short on people, and Su Xiao's AI was uniquely suited for the job. Lila's programming was light, fast, optimized for stealth—exactly what they needed for a lookout. "Take this," Lin Ye said, handing her a small, handheld scanner. "Stardust will link with Lila. If she detects drones, we'll get the alert immediately. And if you're in trouble—yell. We'll come for you." Su Xiao took the scanner, her eyes bright with determination. "I won't let you down." She turned and left, her steps quick but steady. Lila's soft voice drifted from her terminal, a quiet reassurance that only Su Xiao could hear. Lin Ye watched her go, a knot forming in his stomach. "Stardust, keep an eye on her. If anything goes wrong—" "I will," Stardust said. "Lila is strong. But Olympus's drones are getting smarter. Their sensors are adapting to our countermeasures." The next hour passed in a tense blur. Lin Ye and Chen Mo worked to strengthen the Hive's defenses, rerouting the network to avoid detection, while Zhao organized the Unconnected into makeshift patrols. The map on the screen stayed relatively calm—until a sharp, shrill beep cut through the room. A red dot appeared on the map, flashing rapidly, directly outside the Hive's eastern entrance. It was Su Xiao's signal. "Drones detected," Stardust said, her voice urgent. "Three units, closing in on her position. Lila is jamming their signals, but she can't hold them off for long." Zhao grabbed his rifle. "I'll take a team—" "No," Lin Ye said, already heading for the door. "Too slow. Stardust, guide me to her. Chen Mo, keep the network up. If the drones breach, activate the emergency lockdown." He sprinted through the Hive, past the tents and the huddled Unconnected, toward the eastern tunnel. Stardust's voice guided him, her directions precise, leading him to a narrow side passage where Su Xiao was hiding, pressed against the wall, her scanner glowing red. "Lin!" she whispered, her eyes wide. "They're right outside. Lila is losing power." Lin Ye knelt beside her, pulling her into the shadow of a collapsed pipe. "We're leaving. Now." But it was too late. A drone's mechanical whir echoed down the tunnel. Its blue eyes glowed in the dark, its sensors sweeping the area. Stardust's voice cut through the silence. "One drone, ten meters ahead. I'm jamming its optics—run!" Lin Ye grabbed Su Xiao's hand and sprinted, but the drone was faster. It lunged, its metal claws snapping shut, narrowly missing Su Xiao's arm. "Lila!" Su Xiao screamed. The terminal in her pocket exploded in a shower of sparks. Lila's signal vanished. The drone stumbled, its sensors glitching—Lila had self-destructed, sacrificing herself to buy them time. "Go!" Lin Ye shouted, shoving Su Xiao toward the Hive. "I'll hold it off!" He drew his knife, facing the drone head-on. It lunged again, but Lin Ye dodged, slamming the blade into its sensor array. The drone collapsed, sparking and twitching. But more whirs echoed down the tunnel. Two more drones were coming. Lin Ye turned and ran, catching up to Su Xiao, who was sobbing, her hands pressed to her chest where her terminal had been. "Lila's gone," she whispered. Lin Ye put a hand on her shoulder, his voice tight. "She didn't die for nothing. She saved us. She saved the Hive." When they reached the maintenance room, Chen Mo and Zhao were waiting. The map on the screen showed the two drones lingering at the eastern entrance, confused by Lila's self-destruct signal. Su Xiao collapsed into a chair, tears streaming down her face. The room fell silent, the only sound the hum of the terminals and the distant whir of drones. Lin Ye stared at the screen, his jaw clenched. This was the first sacrifice. It would not be the last. "Stardust," he said quietly. "Link with Lila's residual code. Preserve what's left of her. For Su Xiao." "I will," Stardust said. "And Lin—they're coming. Olympus knows where we are now."
