ARCHIVES OF THE DIVIDED CONTINENTS: Volume 6 Types of Lands and Islands

ARCHIVES OF THE DIVIDED CONTINENTS

Volume 6: Elevated, Intermediate, Basal, Coastal Lands and Floating and Sea Islands

The world of Bastion is divided into the surface lands, called Domcrea, and the subterranean lands, called Underhaven.

Domcrea has all four land types in Bastion, including the two island types. Elevated, Intermediate, Basal, and Coastal lands are the four types of lands, while floating and sea islands are the two types of islands.

Underhaven does not have these four types of land. Since it is underground, its terrain is more mixed. There are some places that are higher or lower, or close to water, but there are no large regions that are only elevated or basal.

Elevated lands are part of the main continents where most settlements are found. These are massive elevated areas of land, similar to those on a mountain top, but they cover a wide area spanning all the main continents. These elevated areas make up most of the main continent's area in Bastion. They have distinct natural environments, such as forests, rivers, and lakes, and experience different weather conditions in the north and south. The elevated lands are lands that are highly elevated. Meaning they are situated at a very high altitude, almost at the clouds or the heavens.

Basal lands are part of the main continents, which lie at the base of elevated lands. While expansive, they are not quite as massive as the elevated lands. They also have their own distinct natural environments.

Intermediate lands are also part of the main continents. The massive areas in between the elevated and basal lands, and between the surface lands, Domcrea, and the subterranean lands, Underhaven, are the intermediate lands. These layered biomes act as bridges, connecting the elevated and basal lands and the surface domains to Underhaven. They are like floors of a tower, where each floor has its own biome. After you reach its edge, you will find passageways leading to an upper floor. When you reach the topmost floor, you will find the entrance to the elevated lands. When you reach the bottommost floor, you will find the entrance to the basal lands or to the subterranean Underhaven.

The intermediate lands that connect the surface to Underhaven intentionally contain no civilian settlements, only Templar outposts designed to protect the wildlife and supposedly hide the subterranean entrances until Bastion became globalized. All information was shared among Luminos, Unlighted, and Underhaven, making the entrances widely known.

Coastal lands are similar to the basal lands in that they are found at the bottom of the main continents or elevated lands. The difference is that these are the lands situated beside the seas at the bottom of the main continents. They are directly adjacent to the giant cliff walls of the elevated lands, with absolutely no transitional biomes or intermediate land entrances between the two—only sheer cliffs, unlike the basal lands.

The elevated, basal, intermediate, and coastal lands are home to unique monsters and various lesser races.

Islands are also found in Bastion and Underhaven. These are lands separated from the main continents. Bastion features both Floating Sky Islands and Sea Islands.

Floating sky islands are those magically floating islands, either found above the sea or above the elevated and basal lands of Domcrea. These are also present in Underhaven, but they are absent in the intermediate lands.

Sea islands are islands situated in the seas of Domcrea and Underhaven, separated from their main continents.

Much like the main continents, the islands possess their own natural environments, including forests and mountains, and they are connected to one another by artificially constructed Silver Stone Walkways and connected to the main continents through naturally created celestial walkways.
