Chapter 4 - THE FIRST RIVAL IN LOVE APPEARS

Adrian took Lily's suitcase and led her away from the crowded streets, moving at a steady pace that didn't invite conversation but didn't reject it either. The city noise gradually faded behind them, replaced by something quieter, more contained.

The taxi ride passed in silence.

Neither of them spoke much, yet the silence didn't feel empty. It wasn't awkward or strained. It simply existed—comfortable in a way that didn't require effort to maintain.

Soon, they arrived.

A small apartment building stood between taller, more expensive ones, as if it had been left behind while everything around it moved forward. It didn't stand out. It didn't try to.

Adrian unlocked the door and stepped inside. "Come in."

Lily followed without hesitation.

The apartment was simple. Clean. Organized. Quiet.

A gray sofa rested against the wall. A small table held neatly stacked books. The television looked barely used. The kitchen was compact but efficient, connected directly to the living space. A short hallway led to a single bedroom and a bathroom.

There were no decorations.

No personal touches.

No warmth.

Nothing that suggested anyone else had ever existed there.

Lily walked in slowly, her gaze moving across the room with careful attention. The walls, the corners, the small details most people would ignore—she noticed all of them.

She wasn't looking for comfort.

She was looking for proof.

After a few seconds, she stopped.

There was nothing.

Not a single trace of another girl.

A faint smile appeared on her lips. "…Good."

Adrian didn't notice.

He placed her suitcase near the wall. "You can stay here for now."

In the kitchen, Adrian moved with quiet efficiency. Eggs, toast, fruit, coffee—simple things, prepared with precision rather than habit. Every motion was clean, controlled, without wasted effort.

Lily sat at the table, watching him.

"You cook like you've done this a lot."

"I haven't."

"Liar."

"I just don't make mistakes."

That made her smile.

It wasn't loud.

But it lingered.

After breakfast, things shifted back to practicality. Adrian handed her a towel along with one of his oversized T-shirts.

She looked at it.

Then at him.

"This is yours?"

"Yes."

She lifted it slightly, bringing it closer without thinking. "…It smells like you."

Adrian paused for a fraction of a second before looking away. "…Just wear it."

She didn't argue.

Night came faster than expected.

And with it—

a problem.

Adrian stood in the hallway, his gaze drifting briefly toward the bedroom. "…I'll take the couch."

Lily looked at him immediately. "Why?"

"You need rest."

"So do you."

"That's not the point."

He turned slightly, intending to end the discussion.

"Adrian."

He stopped.

She walked closer, her steps calm and steady, her expression unchanged.

"You're sleeping in the bed."

"That's not appropriate."

She tilted her head slightly, her gaze unwavering. "Who decides that?"

"…Common sense."

She stepped closer.

Close enough that distance stopped being neutral.

"Didn't you say we'll get married someday?"

Silence followed.

"Then this is kind of pointless, isn't it?"

Adrian exhaled slowly, his thoughts aligning almost immediately.

Her emotional state is unstable.

Distance could make it worse.

That would complicate things.

"…Fine."

The lights went off, and the room fell into darkness. Only faint city light slipped through the curtains, outlining shapes without fully revealing them.

Adrian lay on one side of the bed, careful with his positioning. Not too close. Not too far. Balanced. Controlled.

Silence settled.

Then—

movement.

Lily shifted closer.

Before he could react, she gently pressed forward and turned to face him. The distance between them disappeared almost completely, her presence immediate in a way that left no room for indifference.

Adrian's eyes opened slightly—

and then she leaned in.

The kiss was soft.

Warm.

Certain.

Not hesitant. Not questioning.

Just… decided.

It lingered long enough to matter, but not long enough to become overwhelming. A quiet statement rather than a demand.

Adrian didn't move.

Didn't stop her.

That stillness only seemed to draw her closer, her fingers tightening slightly against his shirt as if anchoring herself in place.

When she pulled back, it wasn't far. Their faces remained close, her gaze steady even in the dim light.

"Goodnight, Adrian."

Her voice was soft, but heavier than before.

"…Goodnight."

His reply was simple, but his gaze lingered for a moment longer than necessary.

A brief silence followed.

"…Do you want to go further?"

Her tone didn't carry embarrassment.

Only curiosity.

Adrian's eyes narrowed slightly. "Not now."

A pause.

"…Okay."

There was no disappointment in her voice.

No frustration.

Just acceptance.

But instead of moving away, she moved closer, her arms wrapping around him naturally as if there had never been another option. Her head rested near his shoulder, her presence settling completely.

She didn't let go.

Adrian looked down slightly. "…What are you doing?"

"Sleeping."

"You're holding me."

A small pause.

Then, softly—

"So you don't disappear."

That made him go silent.

He didn't push her away.

Didn't correct her.

Because now he understood.

This wasn't simple affection.

It was something deeper.

Faster.

And far more unstable.

So he let her stay.

His arm shifted slightly—not fully holding her, but not rejecting her either.

For Lily, that was enough.

Her grip loosened just a little.

But never left.

And slowly—

they fell asleep.

Morning came quietly.

Sunlight filtered through the curtains, soft and steady.

Lily was already awake.

Watching him.

Not intensely.

Not strangely.

Just… focused.

Like she was confirming something real.

Adrian opened his eyes. "…You've been awake?"

"Yes."

"…Why?"

"Because I like watching you sleep."

A pause.

"That's not normal."

"I know."

She smiled.

They got ready and left soon after.

Everything felt normal.

But it wasn't.

Not anymore.

Greenwood University came into view, its entrance filled with students moving in and out, conversations blending into a constant background noise.

Life resumed.

Lily's admission process went smoothly.

Too smoothly.

Adrian noticed it first.

The eyes.

The whispers.

The attention.

And then—

someone familiar.

Emily Carter stood at the edge of the crowd, her posture still, her gaze not quite direct—but not avoiding either.

Her attention shifted to Lily.

Then back to Adrian.

Something changed in her expression.

Confusion.

Discomfort.

Something deeper.

[Ding!]

[SYSTEM ALERT]

[Secondary Emotional Link Detected]

[Target: Emily Carter]

[Emotional Spike: Unstable Recognition]

Adrian's eyes narrowed slightly. "…So it's starting."

Beside him, Lily's grip tightened slightly on his sleeve.

"…Adrian."

"Yes."

"Who is that girl looking at you?"

"…A classmate."

Lily didn't respond.

Her smile remained.

But her eyes sharpened.

Behind them—

Emily stood still.

Watching.

And for the first time—

she didn't look away.
