Chapter 5 - Pressure From All Sides

After Lily's admission was completed, the two of them stood outside the administrative building. Students passed by in small groups, conversations blending into a steady background hum as life continued without interruption.

But between them, the world felt quieter.

Lily still held onto Adrian's sleeve, her fingers resting lightly against the fabric. It wasn't tight enough to draw attention, but it was firm enough to matter.

"…You're not coming with me?" she asked.

Her voice was calm, steady—but not empty. There was something faint beneath it, something subtle that didn't need to be spoken.

Reluctance.

Adrian glanced briefly at her hand before looking at her face. "I have class."

A short pause followed.

"…Then I'll see you later."

She didn't let go immediately. Her fingers lingered for just a second longer, as if confirming something—his presence, his reality—before slowly releasing him.

"…Don't talk to too many girls."

The words sounded casual.

But they weren't.

Adrian noticed.

Of course he did.

"…I'll try."

Not a promise. Not a joke.

Just careful neutrality.

And yet, that seemed to satisfy her.

Lily turned and began to walk away, her pace unhurried. But after a few steps, she glanced back—just once.

Making sure he was still there.

[Ding!]

[SYSTEM WARNING]

[Target Emotional Deviation Increasing]

[Target: Emily Carter]

[Thought Frequency Spike Detected]

[Obsession Seed Formation: 7%]

Adrian stopped walking.

"…Already?"

Too fast.

Emily shouldn't be reacting at this level yet.

Unless—

He cut the thought off.

There wasn't time to speculate.

He turned and headed toward the corridor.

Emily stood near the classroom window, her posture still, her gaze directed outside. To anyone else, she looked calm—just another student waiting for class.

But she wasn't looking at anything.

Her thoughts were elsewhere.

Footsteps approached.

She didn't turn.

But she knew.

"…Who is she?"

Her voice came first.

Direct.

Without hesitation.

Adrian stopped beside her.

"Who?"

He already knew the answer.

But he asked anyway.

Emily turned slowly, her eyes meeting his.

"The girl you were with," she said. "She doesn't look like just a classmate."

Her tone wasn't aggressive.

But it wasn't calm either.

There was something beneath it—something she hadn't fully recognized yet.

Adrian studied her for a brief moment before answering.

"She's my childhood sweetheart."

Silence followed.

Emily blinked once.

Then again.

"…Oh."

Her shoulders relaxed slightly, almost imperceptibly, as if something inside her had eased.

But the moment didn't end there.

"…So she's not your girlfriend?"

Her voice was quieter this time, more careful. Almost like she didn't want the question to sound important.

Adrian looked at her a little longer than necessary.

Then asked, lightly—

"Why?"

A pause.

"…Are you jealous?"

Emily froze.

Just for a second.

Then her expression shifted.

"Who's jealous?" she replied quickly. Too quickly. "I'm just curious."

A beat passed.

"…That's all."

But even she felt it.

Something didn't match.

Her words didn't align with what she was feeling.

And that made her uneasy.

Why did it bother me?

The thought formed quietly, without permission.

She didn't answer it.

Because she couldn't.

[Ding!]

[SYSTEM EVALUATION]

[Target Stability: Moderate]

[Host Performance: Controlled]

Adrian exhaled quietly.

"…Still stable."

That was enough.

For now.

"I have class," he said.

Emily nodded slightly. "…Me too."

There was nothing more to say.

And yet, as Adrian walked away—

he felt it.

Her gaze.

Following him.

Quiet.

Constant.

Emily remained where she was for a moment longer before lowering her gaze to her hand. Her fingers curled slightly, as if trying to hold onto something she couldn't quite grasp.

"…Why did I ask that?"

There was no answer.

Only silence.

And something unfamiliar beginning to take shape beneath it.

Inside the classroom, normal life resumed. Chairs shifted, students talked quietly, and the ordinary rhythm of the day returned.

Adrian took a seat near the window, his posture relaxed, his expression calm.

Observing.

Waiting.

Then—

the door opened.

The room fell silent almost instantly.

She entered with measured steps, her posture straight, her presence controlled in a way that didn't demand attention—yet naturally commanded it.

Long black hair framed her face, smooth and precise. Glasses caught the light briefly as she moved, reflecting it in sharp, clean lines. There was no excess in her appearance, no unnecessary expression.

Only composure.

Her gaze swept across the room once.

Then—

it paused.

Briefly.

On Adrian.

Just for a moment.

Before moving on.

"Good morning."

Her voice was calm, clear, and firm.

"I'm your instructor."

A slight pause.

"Evelyn Blake."

[Ding!]

[New Side Mission Assigned]

[Target: Evelyn Blake]

[Objective: Increase favorability to 60 (Love) within 7 days]

[Penalty: Emotional collapse via "irreversible personal loss condition"]

Adrian didn't react outwardly.

But internally—

"…You've got to be kidding me."

His expression remained neutral, his posture unchanged, but his thoughts sharpened instantly.

You're fine giving me missions for girls my age… and now this?

His gaze stayed fixed on the front of the room as Evelyn began writing on the board, her movements precise and unhurried.

Now you want me to target my teacher?

A beat passed.

Isn't that going too far?

For the first time, something close to disbelief surfaced—dry, restrained, almost humorless.

[System Response]

[Emotional connection is not restricted by social hierarchy]

[There is no age limit in love]

Adrian went silent.

"…That's your logic?"

The system didn't respond again.

It didn't need to.

He leaned back slightly in his chair, his gaze steady as he observed Evelyn from a distance—not emotionally, but analytically.

This is getting worse.

Emily.

Lily.

Now a teacher.

Multiple targets.

Multiple emotional triggers.

All active at once.

Evelyn continued writing, her composure unshaken, her presence steady in a way that stood in stark contrast to the others.

She's not like Lily.

She's not like Emily.

She's… stable.

Too stable.

"…This won't be easy."

[Ding!]

[SYSTEM NOTICE]

[Multiple Target Emotional Activity Increasing]

[Stability Risk: Rising]

Adrian's eyes darkened slightly.

"…So it's already spreading."

This was no longer a single thread.

Or even two.

It was all of them.

Quietly.

Naturally.

And once it reached a certain point—

there would be no stopping it.

Outside the classroom window, someone stood still.

Emily.

Watching.

Unmoving.

Her expression calm.

But her thoughts—

weren't.

Childhood sweetheart…

The words repeated in her mind again and again, each time settling deeper than before.

Her fingers curled slightly.

"…Why does it feel like that?"

No answer came.

Only silence.

And something she still couldn't name.
