Cherreads

Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: Cooking

The morning rush had settled into a steady rhythm inside the Krusty Krab. Orders were coming in at a comfortable pace not overwhelming, but enough to keep everyone moving.

Colette worked with focused precision at the grill station, flipping patties and assembling Krabby Patties with the clean efficiency of a professional chef. SpongeBob was beside her, humming happily as he handled the fryer and the pizza oven, his energy making the kitchen feel alive.

Kevin stood at the far end of the counter, rolling up his sleeves. He started with Jake's famous Bacon Pancakes.

He pulled out the ingredients he had prepared earlier: high-quality flour, eggs, milk, sugar, baking powder, a generous amount of crispy bacon bits he had fried fresh, maple syrup, and butter. He began mixing the dry ingredients in a large bowl, flour, sugar, baking powder, and a pinch of salt and whisking them together until evenly combined.

Then he added the wet ingredients: cracked eggs, milk, and a splash of vanilla extract. He stirred gently, careful not to overmix, keeping the batter slightly lumpy for maximum fluffiness.

Next, he folded in the crispy bacon bits, making sure they were evenly distributed. The kitchen immediately filled with the savory, smoky aroma of bacon mixed with the sweet scent of pancake batter.

He heated a griddle, brushed it lightly with butter, and ladled the batter into perfect circles. As the pancakes cooked, small bubbles formed on the surface. When the edges turned golden, he flipped them with a practiced flick of the spatula. The second side sizzled beautifully, releasing even more of that irresistible bacon scent.

When they were done, he stacked three thick, golden pancakes on a plate, drizzled warm maple syrup over the top, and added a pat of melting butter that slowly oozed down the sides. The final touch was a light sprinkle of extra bacon bits on top for crunch.

He set the plate aside and moved on to the second recipe: Kronk's Spinach Puffs.

Kevin started by preheating the oven and preparing the filling. He sautéed fresh spinach in a pan with a little garlic and olive oil until it wilted and released its moisture.

He drained it well, then mixed it in a bowl with three different cheeses, sharp cheddar for bite, creamy ricotta for smoothness, and grated Parmesan for nuttiness. He added chopped fresh herbs (parsley, dill, and a touch of thyme), a pinch of nutmeg, salt, and pepper. The filling smelled earthy, savory, and incredibly comforting.

He rolled out chilled puff pastry dough on a floured surface until it was thin but not too delicate. Using a cutter, he made neat squares, spooned a generous amount of the spinach-cheese mixture into the center of each, then folded them into elegant triangles, crimping the edges with a fork to seal them. He brushed the tops with egg wash for a beautiful golden shine and sprinkled a little extra Parmesan on top.

He slid the tray into the oven. The kitchen soon filled with the rich, buttery aroma of baking puff pastry as the puffs rose and turned golden-brown.

When both recipes were finished, Kevin plated them beautifully. The Bacon Pancakes were stacked high with syrup cascading down the sides, and the Spinach Puffs were arranged neatly on a plate with a small bowl of marinara for dipping.

He called out, "Colette, SpongeBob orders are slow right now. Come try these."

SpongeBob practically bounced over, eyes wide with excitement. Colette wiped her hands on a towel and approached with a more measured, professional curiosity.

Kevin set the plates down. "First up: Bacon Pancakes. Fluffy, sweet, savory, and loaded with crispy bacon and these are Spinach Puffs, savory, cheesy, flaky pastries with spinach and three cheeses."

SpongeBob didn't hesitate. He cut into the pancakes, took a big bite, and his whole body seemed to light up. "Boss… these are incredible! The bacon inside is so crispy and the pancake is so fluffy! It's like breakfast and dinner had the best baby ever!"

Colette took a more refined approach. She cut a small piece of pancake, chewed thoughtfully, then nodded. "The balance is excellent. The sweetness of the maple and the saltiness of the bacon work perfectly together. Very comforting. I can see this being popular for brunch or late breakfast."

She then tried one of the Spinach Puffs, breaking it open to reveal the gooey cheese and spinach filling. Her eyes widened slightly. "Oh… this is very good. The pastry is perfectly flaky, the filling is rich but not heavy. The herbs give it a nice brightness. This would pair beautifully with a soup or as an appetizer."

Kevin watched them both with a satisfied smile. "Honest reviews?"

SpongeBob gave a double thumbs-up. "Ten out of ten! We should put both on the menu right away!"

Colette nodded in agreement. "I agree. These are strong additions. The customers will love them."

Kevin felt a surge of pride. Two brand-new items were ready to join the menu.
