The back of the school playground was almost always empty.
It was the part most students ignored—the side where tall trees stood quietly, their leaves swaying gently, and the air felt cooler. Sunlight filtered through the branches, falling softly on the grass.
Lillian stood there alone.
Her arms rested lightly by her sides, her gaze fixed on the view ahead. Her expression was calm—not smiling, not sad—just… still.
Lost in her own thoughts.
Footsteps approached from behind, soft against the ground.
She didn't turn.
Owen stopped beside her, slipping his hands into his pockets. He leaned slightly forward, following her line of sight, as if trying to understand what she was looking at.
"You miss someone?" he said playfully.
Lillian shook her head slowly.
"No."
There was a short pause.
Owen tilted his head, studying the view again. "You enjoy nature views too?"
"Yes," she replied.
This time, she nodded—slow, quiet, certain.
Owen smiled, a little surprised. "Wow."
He shifted his weight, relaxing beside her. "I enjoy views too. Looking at nature… it's one of my favorite things to do."
"Me too," Lillian said softly.
The words came easier this time.
Owen glanced at her, noticing that.
"What's your favorite color?" he asked.
"Green," she replied almost immediately.
Owen's smile widened slightly. "I also love green."
A small silence settled between them again—but it wasn't awkward.
It felt… easy.
Lillian turned her head just a little, looking at him briefly before speaking again.
"You watch movies?"
Owen nodded. "Yeah, of course I do."
"What genres?"
Owen hesitated. "Urm… something like horror, or—"
"Wait," Lillian cut in, turning to face him more properly. "You watch horror?"
Owen raised a brow. "Yeah, I do. You don't?"
"Hell no," she said flatly.
Owen chuckled softly. "You should try it."
"No," she replied immediately.
There was a tiny pause… then Owen asked,
"You'd watch a movie with me?"
Lillian didn't even think about it. "No."
Owen smiled, not offended—just amused. "I know the kind of genres you like. Probably romance… or urban."
Lillian made a face instantly. "Eww."
She shook her head. "I'm not Bella. Bella watches those kinds of movies."
Owen let out a quiet laugh.
"So what genres do you watch?" he asked.
Lillian looked ahead again, her voice calmer now. "I only watch movies with emotional thrill… or better still, fantasy."
Owen blinked, a little surprised.
"Wow," he said quietly. "You're actually… really interesting."
Lillian didn't reply.
But this time, she didn't look away either.
Instead, she turned her head slowly and looked at him.
Really looked at him.
Owen noticed.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
The air shifted—just slightly.
Owen held her gaze, his expression no longer playful. There was something softer there now. Curious. Genuine.
Lillian didn't break eye contact immediately.
Then, slowly, she turned away again.
But this time—
There was the faintest hint of a smile at the corner of her lips.
Owen saw it.
And smiled too.
Somewhere on the other side of the school building…
Bella laughed loudly with a group of students—
Completely unaware
that something quiet…
and real…
was beginning without her.
