Chapter 13 - BETWEEN 3 PEOPLE

The next day at school felt normal on the surface.

Students moved around the hallway in their usual groups—laughing, shouting, dragging chairs, exchanging snacks. But inside one classroom, something was already shifting quietly.

Owen sat at his desk, leaning back casually with one hand in his pocket and the other tapping lightly on the table. His eyes kept drifting toward the door, like he was waiting for something—or someone.

Lillian was already inside.

She sat by the window, calm as always, flipping through a book with quiet focus. Her posture was straight, her attention steady. She didn't seem disturbed by anything around her.

Then the door opened.

Bella walked in.

Her usual bright energy filled the room immediately. She smiled, adjusting her bag strap as her eyes quickly scanned the classroom.

And as expected—

They landed on Owen first.

But this time, something felt slightly different.

Because Owen didn't look away from Lillian immediately.

He noticed Bella.

He smiled.

But it wasn't instant anymore.

Bella caught that delay.

Just a second too long.

Still, she walked over confidently.

"Hey," she said softly, stopping beside Owen's desk.

Owen nodded. "Morning."

Bella placed her bag on the desk beside his, like she naturally belonged there. Then she glanced at Lillian.

"Hi, Lillian," she said brightly.

Lillian looked up.

"Hi," she replied calmly.

Then she went back to her book.

Simple.

Neutral.

No extra emotion.

But Bella noticed something small—

Owen's eyes had already shifted slightly toward Lillian again.

Bella slowly sat down beside Owen, leaning in slightly. "What are you doing?"

"Waiting for class," Owen said casually.

Bella smiled. "You could've waited with me outside."

Owen chuckled lightly. "I didn't see you."

That was a simple sentence.

But Bella felt it.

Because he did see Lillian earlier.

The thought passed quickly—but it stayed.

Lillian turned a page in her book.

The sound was soft, but it felt louder than it should've.

Owen suddenly leaned forward slightly. "Lillian."

She looked up.

"Yes?"

"What are you reading now?"

"Extra notes," she replied simply.

Bella watched carefully.

Owen nodded slowly like he was genuinely interested.

"Oh… can I see?"

Lillian paused for a moment.

Then slid the book slightly toward him.

Not fully.

Just enough.

Owen leaned closer.

Bella noticed immediately.

The distance between them was smaller now.

Too natural.

Too easy.

Bella shifted in her seat. "You two are studying again?"

Owen glanced back. "Yeah, she's helping me."

Bella forced a small laugh. "You're always getting help from her."

Lillian didn't react.

Owen did though.

He smiled slightly. "She's better at explaining."

That line landed quietly in the air.

Not loud.

But heavy.

Bella blinked once.

Then smiled again—but tighter this time.

"Oh," she said softly.

A pause followed.

Then Bella leaned forward slightly, trying to reclaim attention. "Owen, I brought something for you."

She reached into her bag and pulled out a small snack, placing it on his desk.

Owen looked at it. "Oh… thanks."

But his reaction was mild.

Polite.

Not excited.

Bella noticed that too.

Meanwhile, Lillian quietly closed her book.

She wasn't reacting at all.

But she had seen everything.

She stood up slightly. "I need to go to the front."

She didn't explain further.

Just walked away.

Bella watched her leave.

Then turned back to Owen quickly.

"So…" she said, softer now, "what are you doing after school?"

Owen leaned back again. "Not sure yet."

Bella smiled. "We could—"

Before she finished, Owen's phone buzzed.

He picked it up.

Bella stopped talking.

Owen glanced at the message.

Then stood up slightly.

"I'll be back," he said casually.

Bella blinked. "Where are you going?"

"To talk to Lillian," he replied simply.

And he walked away.

Just like that.

Bella sat still.

For a moment.

The classroom noise continued around her—but she wasn't really hearing it anymore.

Her eyes slowly followed Owen as he walked toward Lillian near the front of the class.

Lillian was standing by the board now, writing something.

Owen stopped beside her.

They began talking quietly.

Naturally.

Comfortably.

Bella tightened her fingers around the edge of her desk.

It wasn't loud.

It wasn't dramatic.

But something had formed.

A triangle.

But not balanced.

Owen—

Somewhere between them.

And Bella realized something she didn't want to admit yet:

She wasn't losing him suddenly.

She was slowly being pushed out of the center without anyone announcing it.

Lillian turned slightly to explain something.

Owen laughed lightly.

Bella saw it.

And for the first time—

she didn't feel included in that laugh.
