Bella didn't wake up angry.
That was the confusing part.
She woke up normal.
She got dressed normally.
She even smiled on her way to school.
But by the time she stepped into the classroom, something in her had already started shifting again.
Because she saw them.
Owen and Lillian.
Already talking.
Already comfortable.
Already there without her.
Owen was sitting slightly turned toward Lillian's desk, listening as she explained something on a sheet of paper.
Lillian's voice was calm.
Steady.
Focused.
Owen nodded occasionally, like he was actually trying to understand every word.
Bella stopped at the door for a second.
Just one second.
Then walked in anyway.
"Morning," she said brightly.
Owen turned. "Hey."
Lillian looked up briefly. "Hi."
Then both went back to what they were doing.
Bella sat down beside Owen.
Too close.
She adjusted her chair slightly louder than needed.
"So," she said lightly, "what are you two doing again?"
"Revision," Owen replied.
Bella smiled. "Again?"
Owen nodded.
Lillian flipped a page.
No reaction.
Bella leaned closer to Owen.
"You didn't reply my message last night," she said softly.
Owen blinked. "I fell asleep."
Bella smiled quickly. "You always say that."
He gave a small shrug.
Then turned back to Lillian.
Bella noticed.
Immediately.
Lillian tapped the paper gently. "You're missing this step again."
Owen leaned in. "Which one?"
"This one," she said, pointing closer.
Owen shifted forward.
Bella's eyes followed that movement.
Too close again.
Too natural again.
Something in her chest tightened.
"Lillian," Bella called suddenly.
Lillian looked up.
"Yes?"
Bella forced a smile. "Can you explain that part to me too?"
A pause.
Lillian nodded slightly. "It's simple. You just balance it like this—"
But Bella wasn't really listening.
She was watching Owen.
Because he wasn't looking at her.
He was looking at Lillian.
Like he belonged there.
Bella laughed softly.
Too softly.
Then leaned back.
"I think I understand," she said, even though she hadn't really tried.
Owen nodded absentmindedly.
"Good," Lillian said calmly.
And went back to teaching him.
That was the moment it started getting worse.
Because Bella stopped trying to fit in smoothly.
And started trying to interrupt.
During break, Owen stood up to get water.
Bella immediately followed him.
"Owen," she called.
He turned. "Yeah?"
She smiled quickly. "Walk with me."
He hesitated.
Then nodded.
As they walked, Bella talked faster than usual.
"So you and Lillian study every day now?"
"Sometimes," Owen replied.
Bella nodded. "She's always quiet."
"Yeah."
Silence.
Then Bella added carefully, "You seem more serious around her."
Owen frowned slightly. "What do you mean?"
Bella laughed lightly. "Nothing. Just saying."
But her hands tightened around her bag strap.
At the same time, Lillian was back in class alone.
Writing.
Still unaware.
Still not fully understanding the shift forming around her.
To her, nothing had changed.
Owen still needed help.
Bella still talked a lot.
That was all.
But Bella came back different.
She didn't sit properly when she returned.
She dropped her bag slightly harder than before.
She didn't smile as easily.
And when Owen returned and sat beside Lillian again—
Bella watched.
Quiet.
Still.
Too still.
Owen leaned toward Lillian again.
"Like this?" he asked.
"Yes," Lillian replied.
Owen smiled faintly. "Okay."
Bella's eyes narrowed slightly.
Then she stood up suddenly.
"Lillian," she said.
Lillian looked up again.
"Yes?"
Bella forced a smile.
"You always get his attention," she said lightly.
A pause.
Owen blinked. "Bella—"
But she cut him off softly.
"I'm just saying," she added quickly, forcing a laugh. "You're very good at explaining things."
Lillian stared at her for a moment.
Confused.
Not defensive.
Just confused.
"I'm not doing anything special," Lillian said.
Bella smiled again—but it cracked slightly.
"Yeah," she said softly. "That's what makes it worse."
Silence.
Owen stood up slowly.
"Bella, stop."
His voice wasn't harsh.
But it was serious.
Bella froze.
Just for a second.
Then she looked away.
"I'm fine," she said quickly.
But her hands were shaking slightly as she grabbed her bag.
She walked out of the classroom.
Fast.
Too fast.
Zainab saw her outside the hallway.
"Bella?" she called.
But Bella didn't stop.
She just kept walking.
Because something inside her was no longer quiet.
It was building.
And she didn't know how to stop it anymore.
Inside the classroom, Lillian finally looked at Owen.
"What did she mean?" she asked softly.
Owen didn't answer immediately.
Then he sighed.
"I don't know," he said.
But his eyes followed the door Bella left through.
And for the first time—
he looked slightly unsure too.
