Chapter 20 - ALMOST CONFESSION

The classroom was quieter than usual.

Not empty—but quieter in a way that made every small sound feel louder.

Owen sat at his desk, but he wasn't doing anything. His notebook was open, pen resting on the page, untouched. For once, he wasn't distracted by jokes or random movement.

He was thinking.

Not casually.

Carefully.

Across the room, Lillian was still at her usual spot by the window. Calm. Focused. Writing like the world didn't need to interrupt her.

Owen kept glancing at her.

Not quickly anymore.

Longer.

Intentional.

Like he had decided something but was still waiting for the right moment to say it.

He tapped his pen once on the desk.

Then again.

Then stopped.

Lillian noticed him before he spoke.

"You're not writing," she said without looking up.

Owen blinked. "Huh?"

"You've been staring at a blank page for ten minutes."

That made him pause.

Then he gave a small smile. "I was thinking."

"About chemistry?" she asked.

"…No," he said slowly.

That made her finally look up.

Just for a second.

Then she went back to her notes.

But Owen didn't move.

Instead, he stood up.

Slowly.

And walked toward her desk.

Not like before—when he came for help or jokes.

This time, his steps were different.

Measured.

Calm.

Lillian noticed immediately.

He stopped beside her desk.

"Lillian," he said.

She looked up. "Yes?"

A pause.

Owen exhaled lightly.

This wasn't his usual tone.

No teasing.

No distraction.

Just direct.

"I've been thinking about something," he said.

Lillian tilted her head slightly. "Okay."

He nodded once.

Then sat down in the empty chair beside her—not across the room, not leaning from afar. Close enough to be serious.

That made her pause.

Owen placed his hands together on the desk.

For once, he wasn't smiling.

"I like how you explain things," he started.

Lillian blinked. "You've said that before."

"I know," he replied. "But that's not what I mean."

Silence.

His eyes stayed on her now.

Focused.

Not drifting.

"I mean…" he hesitated for the first time, then continued, "I like being around you."

Lillian went still.

Not reacting loudly.

Just still.

Owen continued before the moment could break.

"Like… I don't feel lost when I'm sitting with you," he said quietly. "It's easy to talk to you. Easy to listen. I don't have to pretend or joke all the time."

His fingers tightened slightly together.

"I don't know how to explain it properly," he added, letting out a small breath. "But I just—"

The classroom door suddenly opened.

"OWEN!"

Bella's voice cut through the moment.

Both of them turned.

Bella stood at the entrance, slightly out of breath, holding something in her hand.

Her eyes immediately went from Owen… to Lillian… to the distance between them.

Something changed in her expression.

Owen straightened slightly.

"Bella—"

But she was already walking in.

"I've been looking for you," she said quickly, forcing a light smile as she came closer.

Her gaze flicked again.

Too quick.

Too sharp.

She saw the chair Owen was sitting on.

She saw how close he was to Lillian.

She saw the tension in the air that hadn't been there a second ago.

And she interrupted it completely.

"I brought you something," Bella said, placing a small item on Owen's desk.

Owen blinked. "Right now?"

Bella nodded too fast. "Yeah. Important."

Lillian slowly looked down at her notes again.

Not reacting.

But her hand paused for a second before writing again.

Owen exhaled lightly, shifting slightly in his seat.

"Bella, I was—"

She leaned in slightly before he finished.

"I just needed to talk to you," she said softly.

Her eyes didn't leave his.

Not even for a second.

Owen glanced back at Lillian briefly.

The moment had changed.

Not broken completely.

But pushed away.

He stood up slowly.

"Okay," he said.

Bella smiled immediately.

But it didn't reach her eyes.

Lillian stayed silent.

Watching.

Not fully understanding what she had just interrupted.

But feeling the shift anyway.

Owen walked a little distance with Bella.

But before leaving fully, he looked back once.

Lillian was already writing again.

Like nothing happened.

But Owen didn't look the same anymore.

Because what he was about to say…

never made it out.

And Bella knew it.

Even if she pretended she didn't.
