Chapter 55 - The Devil Meets Me At The Subway (And He's Polite About It)

"Daniel, I'm heading out."

Abel waved to the keeper of the New York Sanctum as he crossed the entrance hall. Daniel nodded from behind his desk, already absorbed in a text that looked older than most countries.

The Sanctum's front door opened onto Bleecker Street. Abel stepped out into the warm evening air, let the door close behind him, and walked the three blocks to the nearest subway station.

He was thinking about the Contract. About Blackheart, and about a dozen things, which is probably why he didn't notice the wrongness until he was already standing on the platform.

The platform was empty.

Not quiet. Not sparse.

Empty.

No commuters, no buskers, no transit workers, no homeless sleepers on benches. The overhead lights flickered in rapid, irregular pulses, buzzing with the sound of electricity under strain. The air tasted metallic, like the moment before a thunderstorm, except there was no storm. Just the lights. Just the buzzing. Just the absence of every human being who should have been there.

Abel's hand drifted to his wand.

The lights went out.

Darkness. Complete, absolute, the kind that presses against your eyes and makes you doubt they're open. Three seconds. Four.

The lights returned.

A man stood twenty feet away.

Old. Immaculately dressed. Black overcoat, black cane, grey-white hair combed back with surgical precision. He looked like a retired diplomat, the kind of man who'd spent decades in embassy drawing rooms and kept his shoes polished out of habit. Neat. Dignified. Civilized.

Except that every time the lights flickered, a second face appeared beneath the first. Something with too many teeth and not enough skin, a visage of raw malice that surfaced and vanished in the strobe like a shark's fin breaking water. The human face smiled. The devil face grinned.

Abel felt it before he identified it. A pressure in his chest, a tightening of the throat, the primal, lizard-brain recognition of something that existed on a scale his body couldn't process. Fear, but not the kind you could rationalize or train away. The kind that was wired into the species, the instinct that told early humans to stay away from the cave mouth when the shadows moved wrong.

Lord of Hell. Mephisto.

Abel exhaled slowly. Let the fear register. Let it pass through him without settling.

He can't act directly on Earth. He can threaten, tempt, manipulate, but he can't physically touch me. If he could, he wouldn't be talking. He'd be taking. The rules exist, and even Mephisto is bound by them. Heaven, the Vishanti, the other cosmic powers, none of them would tolerate a Dimension Lord breaking the compact.

"Mephisto."

The devil inclined his head with the grace of a man who'd been accepting introductions for longer than human civilization had existed.

"It is an honor to meet you, Mr. Shaw."

"The legendary Lord of Hell knows my name. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't surprised."

"Oh, Mr. Shaw." The lights flickered. The devil-face surfaced, all teeth. Then the gentleman returned, smooth and patient. "Anyone capable of defeating my former knight singlehandedly, even diminished as he was, commands attention. Add to that your close ties with Kamar-Taj, and you become someone I take a personal interest in."

"I doubt you came here for small talk."

Mephisto tapped his cane against the platform floor. The sound echoed in the empty station, sharp and final.

"You're direct. Good. Then I will be too." He took one step forward. The temperature dropped two degrees. "You have something of mine, Mr. Shaw. I would very much like it returned."

"I'm not sure what you mean. How would a mere wizard like me end up with something belonging to the great Lord of Hell?"

"Mr. Shaw." The smile widened. The devil-face lingered a beat longer this time. "No one in this world can lie to me. I know the Contract of San Venganza is under your control. Kamar-Taj's vault is a clever hiding place, but a vault doesn't change ownership. "

"Ah, the Contract. But I took it from someone else's hands, not yours. Why would you call it yours?"

Mephisto's eyes held Abel's. He saw that persuasion wasn't going to work. Not with this one. The old devil shifted tactics without missing a beat.

"Very well. What would it take for you to return it? Power? Wealth? Strength? Beauty? Immortality?" Each word was offered like a course at a fine dinner. "Anything you can imagine, I can provide. And if you're concerned about trust, we can formalize the arrangement with a contract. You must know that once a devil signs a contract, it is absolutely binding."

"I'll pass on the contract. I've heard about Johnny's father. What you did to him was rather petty for someone of your stature."

The lights stuttered. The gentleman's face hardened. The devil-face surged forward, filling Mephisto's features for a full second before receding.

"Abel Shaw." The courtesy was gone. The voice dropped half an octave, resonating in Abel's sternum. "As Lord of Hell, I have followers and agents on the surface. Many of them. You are not an ordinary person, and your strength is considerable. But your mother, dear old Theresa is just an ordinary woman. I cannot act directly. But my followers have plenty of room to act."

The threat hung in the air between them like smoke.
