Chapter 56 - I Negotiate With The Devil (And Then Get Ambushed By A Biker)

Abel's hand didn't move toward his wand. His heartbeat didn't change. His expression, beneath the hood that wasn't there, remained exactly as it had been.

He threatened Theresa.

The Lord of Hell just threatened my mother.

The fear was there. Abel would have been a fool to deny it. Mephisto had followers on Earth. Real ones. People who would burn a house, poison a meal, push a woman in front of a train, all for a whispered promise from their master. Theresa had no magic, no protection, no idea that her son was standing in an empty subway station negotiating with the Devil.

But fear and panic were different things. Fear was information. Panic was death.

Abel looked at Mephisto and smiled.

His voice was level, almost conversational. "The Contract of San Venganza has no practical value to me. I have no use for a thousand bound souls. You can have it back. I just need you to offer something worth the trade."

Mephisto's eyes narrowed. The lights flickered.

"But," Abel continued, "right now isn't the time. You know as well as I do that Kamar-Taj is watching me. If I make a private deal with the Lord of Hell while I'm closely affiliated with the Sorcerer Supreme, it creates problems for both of us. You need me to have distance from Kamar-Taj before we can negotiate freely."

"How long?"

"Until after Blackheart is dealt with. Once the crisis is over and the attention fades, the Contract becomes old news. That's when we talk."

Mephisto studied him. The gentleman's face and the devil's face flickered in rapid succession, faster now, as if the two halves were arguing with each other.

"My patience is considerable, Mr. Shaw. I have existed for longer than your species. Waiting is something I do well." The flickering slowed. The gentleman won. "But I also despise deception. If you attempt to trick me, if you hand the ownership of the Contract to Kamar-Taj, if you destroy it, then there will be consequences. Not for you. For her."

"I understand. And you should understand something in return." Abel took one step forward. The fear was still there, humming in his blood, but he kept it locked behind his teeth. "If anything happens to my mother, anything at all, I will take the Contract to Kamar-Taj, hand it to the Ancient One, and spend the rest of my life making your existence on Earth as difficult as possible. I can't threaten you in Hell. But on the surface? I can make your life very, very uncomfortable."

Silence.

The lights stopped flickering. The station was still. Even the distant rumble of trains had ceased, as if the city itself was holding its breath.

Then Mephisto smiled. A real smile this time, not the salesman's grin or the predator's baring of teeth. Something closer to... respect.

"Very well, Mr. Shaw. I will wait. And your mother will be safe. You have my word."

"The word of a devil."

"The only kind worth having. Human promises break so easily."

Mephisto took one step backward. The shadows behind him deepened, thickened, swallowed his silhouette from the feet up. His face was the last thing to disappear, the gentleman's smile and the devil's grin overlapping for one final moment.

Then he was gone.

The lights came on. All of them, steady and bright. Voices materialized from nowhere, commuters appearing on the platform as if they'd been there all along, the world snapping back to normal like a rubber band released.

Abel stood perfectly still for three seconds. Then he let out a long, shaky breath.

His shirt was soaked through with sweat. His hands, which had been steady throughout the entire conversation, were trembling now.

Dancing on the tip of a knife. That's what negotiating with the Lord of Hell feels like. One wrong word and Theresa becomes a target. One wrong move and I lose the Contract for nothing.

But I bought time. He agreed to wait. And as long as I grow strong enough before the deal comes due, I can negotiate from a position of real strength instead of desperation.

The subway arrived. Abel stepped on, found a seat, and rode home in silence.

One week later

"Tony, how's the injection research? Done?"

Abel sat on the couch in Tony's Manhattan penthouse, watching Tony hold up a syringe filled with amber liquid like it was the Holy Grail.

The past week had been quiet. No demons. No Ghost Rider sightings. No flickering lights in empty subway stations. Just Abel and Tony, locked in the penthouse lab, converting the Blood Toxin Elixir from an oral potion into an injectable serum.

Abel had thought it was a waste of time. The potion worked perfectly fine as a drink. Adding a step to convert it into an injection was pure vanity.

Tony had disagreed. Violently.

"Abel, I would rather fight Obadiah naked than drink that potion again. The injection format is not optional. It is a moral imperative."

So they'd spent a week on it. And now it was done.

"Finally," Tony said, turning the syringe in the light. "Full potency, no flavor. You just inject it and forget about it. No more tasting the inside of Satan's gym locker."

"This technology could be useful for Stark Pharma's product line too," Abel said. "Commercial potions with injectable delivery. Better for storage, transport, and it protects the formula from reverse-engineering."

"Already thought of that. The conversion tech is yours. Consider it part of my thirty percent contribution." Tony set the syringe down carefully. "But seriously, are you sure about leaving most of the company operations to me? It's your company."

"I only need the money and the restored potion formulas. Everything else is a distraction I'd rather not deal with."

"You mean leave it to Pepper."

"I mean leave it to Pepper."

Tony laughed. "Fair."

Abel stood and pulled on his jacket. "Research is done. I need to head home. mom's going to start asking questions if I'm gone much longer."

"It's late. Want me to send a car?"

"No. I'm making a stop on the way. There's a bakery that sells my mom's favorite dessert. If I come home empty-handed after a week away, I'll never hear the end of it."

"Smart man. Self-preservation instinct."

Abel took the elevator down and walked out of the Stark Building into the evening air.

He was halfway to the curb, scanning for a taxi, when he noticed the man leaning against a motorcycle across the street.

Tall. Lean. Leather jacket, dark hair, the particular posture of someone who carried tension in their shoulders like armor. His eyes tracked Abel the moment he stepped outside.

Johnny Blaze.

Abel didn't break stride. He glanced at Johnny the way any normal person would glance at a stranger on the sidewalk, turned, and started walking.

Johnny followed.

"Mr. Shaw? Abel Shaw?"

Abel stopped. Turned. Put on his best confused expression. "I'm sorry, do I know you?"

"Mr. Shaw, I need you to give me the Contract of San Venganza. I need it to save someone."

Blackheart caught someone Johnny cares about. His girlfriend, probably. Using her as leverage to get the Contract.

Which means Blackheart isn't as stupid as I thought.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Please don't play dumb. I know the Contract is with you. Just give it to me."

Johnny's voice had shifted from request to demand. There was anger underneath, barely contained, and behind the anger, the particular desperation of a man whose loved one was in danger. The Spirit of Vengeance was in there too, a furnace behind Johnny's eyes, giving him the confidence to confront someone he knew was dangerous.

Abel said nothing. He turned and walked away, moving quickly, ducking into a side street before Johnny could follow.

Blackheart has a hostage. Johnny's girlfriend, Roxanne, if I remember correctly. That changes the equation. I need to get to Kamar-Taj and plan this out.

He cut through a narrow alley, heading for the spot where he usually opened his portals. The bakery could wait. Theresa's dessert could wait. This couldn't.

Behind him, he could feel Johnny's eyes on his back. Following. Tracking.

He's still behind me. Which means anyone else tracking Johnny is about to find me too.

The thought arrived half a second before the Earth Demon did.
