Week 1
Haircut. Clothes that belonged in lobbies. Same name, twenty-five on the forms, company three shells deep. Mirror still argued.
Phone in a drawer. I didn't dump it. I didn't answer it.
Work was signing crates, sitting in chairs, walking envelopes. Gaze tagged the house every morning: old, quiet, fed-after. Vein Map stayed bored.

[+1 EXP]
Level 13 barely moved.
I started lifting in the spare room because standing still felt like waiting to get edited again.
Week 3
Silas gave me a keycard and a speech about being quiet. Anton walked me past two kin on the river path. They looked, nodded, left. Roof, not menu. Mara asked if I had called anyone from before. I said no.
Rafael wanted the docks. Tess shut it down.
"Furniture this season. Do not throw the chairs."
System stayed mine. Loops too.
The spare-room bar stopped feeling heavy. Strength wasn't just "hit harder." It was grip that didn't slip, bone that didn't complain, a parked sedan I tested behind the house one night—brake on, tires biting—and the thing moved. Not a movie flip. A scrape. Enough that I put the bar down and sat on the bumper until my hands quit buzzing.
Journal:
Living pays pennies. Their jobs pay pennies in a jacket. Dungeon copies pay like a range. Real endings pay like theft. Garage was theft. I'm not doing that for a number.
Classroom key. Thin mobs. Grit when they broke. No hole in the city after. Level 14.
Copies weren't lives. That part got simple.
Week 6
Victor came, didn't sit.
"Still warm. Still quiet. Keep both."
Tailor. A dinner where nobody ate. I learned which glass was mine.
Vitality wasn't just "don't die." Sleep hit faster. A bad landing off the fire escape should have been a week of swelling. It was a bruise that was gone by morning. I ran the river stairs until elite-high-school-me would have quit. This body didn't. Top-percentile human on a track is rare. I was past that and pretending I wasn't.
Scarpace once, bottle in an alley, no job. Tremor after. Felt dumb.
Mara, kitchen:
"You are not the first odd warmth on file. Loud blood. Bodies that ignore rules. Repeaters. Saints the Congregation drops. A girl who should have burned. A man whose shadow stood up. Most die of being interesting. A few get funded. You are funded. Stay dull."
Anton, path:
"Packs have strays too. Kin-blood that never changed. Don't go looking for a club."
I didn't mention the three watchers or the window that paid me for dishes.
Level 15. Crawl.
Week 10
Cassian's name more often. Two closed envelopes to the pier. Gaze: fed-after, recent, not mine.
No kills.
Long-way-home key plus a lot of ordinary days. Level 16.
Mark drifted eight to fourteen kilometers. I didn't tell them the name. I didn't tell them it moved when he fed.
Workout log was the honest part. Strength 12 to 15. Vitality 13 to 15. A deadlift that would have been a gym video. A refrigerator walked up the stairs without theater. Brakes-on car still moved if I committed. I was not "in good shape." I was past the chart and hiding it in office clothes.
Journal:
Pennies prove I'm here. Copies are a faucet. Real lives are a flood. I'm on pennies on purpose.
Month 3
Tuesday. Paperwork. Level 17.
Status
Level: 17
Strength: 15
Agility: 12
Vitality: 15
Will: 18
Unassigned: 4
Three months of drip. Four points that used to arrive in one bad night.
Tess in the chair.
"You look like the folder. Victor is almost bored. Bored is safe."
"Quarter year."
"No explosion. No Embrace. No caption. Rafael will push. If I send you to the docks it will be noon, where a dead thing cannot stand. That is the use of you."
"The other odd ones."
"Some went to the Congregation. Some to the Folk. One we turned and regretted. Strange blood is a smell. Smells attract kitchens. Do not romanticize it."
Schedule on the dresser. Noon hours. One name. No basement.
I wrote the short version.
Identity held.
They get work. They don't get the System.
EXP: live = pennies. Errands = pennies. Copies = pay. Real endings = stain.
Strength and Vitality are more than the labels. Past human charts. Car with the brake on. Stairs with a fridge. Recovery that should be medical.
Will 18 → 22. Reflect still glass.
Level 17. Crawl. Fine.
Will: 18 → 22
I was putting the notebook back under the mattress when the window flickered without me opening Status.
Not a quest. Not EXP.
A line, like the System had been waiting for me to stop writing on paper like a person who still believed paper was private.
[Function available: Petition]
Ask. If the request exists inside current authority, it will be granted or refused with cause.
I sat on the floor.
"You've got to be kidding."
Three months of scribbling levels and docks and a Mark distance in a book anyone could lift. Tess had a key. Victor had a table. One curious night and the whole crawl was sitting in ballpoint.
I felt like an idiot.
"Show me Archive."
The room didn't change. The corner did. Watcher I had always been the thickest dark. It stepped forward without moving, and a second window laid itself over my sight.
Shadow Attendance — Archive
Role: record.
Scope: host actions, host intent, host body.
Highlight: what the host marks as important.
Also recorded: breath, blink, cell division, sleep stage, wound close, pulse.
Access: host may read. Host may append. Host may not erase.
It wasn't a diary. It was a camera that never blinked and a lab log that didn't care if I was embarrassed.
I scrolled.
Highlighted already: garage. 3B. Tess on the sill. The car with the brake on. Copies vs lives. Will 22.
Under that, a river of junk I had never asked for. Inhale counts. A blink at 3:11 a.m. Skin knitting on the fire-escape bruise. Something in my blood doing math I didn't have words for.
Food for thought, if you liked the idea that nothing about you was off the record.
"Can I write in it."
[Petition accepted.]
Archive append: enabled.
Spoken or thought entries tagged Important will highlight.
Physical media is not required.
"Destroy the notebook pages if they're a risk?"
[Refused.]
Cause: Archive does not reach paper. Hands do.
Fair.
I took the journal to the sink, ripped it, and burned it in the metal bowl I used for coffee grounds. Smoke. Ink going brown. Three months of handwriting turning into a smell the house already knew how to swallow. Gaze flicked once—small fire, no body—and went back to watermark.
The last page curled. I didn't save a line.
"Archive. New entry. Important."
The dark in the corner accepted it like a stamp.
Paper's gone. If they take a bag they get clothes. Not this.
Petition exists. I didn't ask for three months. That's on me.
Archive watches everything. Highlight is mine. The rest is body noise. Breathing. Blinking. Cells. I don't need to read that twice.
System stays off their table. Loops stay off their table. This stays off paper.
I thought about dumping the whole crawl in one speech. Didn't. Important wasn't the same as loud.
"Can they see you."
[Petition accepted.]
Answer: No. Shadows are not visible to the Court, the packs, or ordinary warmth unless Dying Gaze is shared. Sharing is not enabled.
Good enough.
I washed the ash down until the bowl was just a bowl. Notebook was gone. The three watchers were still three. Archive had work. Threshold hadn't moved. Debt had leaned in when I said important, then leaned back.
Level 17. Will 22. Clothes for the older name.
I went to sign the crate.
The drawer where the phone still sat was empty of paper.
That was the point.
