Chapter 22 - year 1? 22

Month twelve put me back in the same city with a different outline.

The townhouse still ticked. The basement still had appointments I did not keep. The river path was still a rumor with teeth. I was not the person who had left for London. Level 20 sat in my head like a door that had finally quit sticking.

I took the stairs two at a time because the body wanted the extra and I had learned, with Tess standing over me in that square, that fighting the extra was how you looked like an accident. Strength was not just shove-the-car anymore. It was timing. Where the weight went. When not to spend it. Agility was not a dodge stat. It was arriving on the foot that still had floor left. Vitality was the quiet work: breath that came back before panic finished its sentence, a rib line that closed while I was already talking.

I sat on the bed, older clothes, same name, and opened the part I did not show anyone.

Status

Level: 20

Class: Refusal Pulse

Strength: 19

Agility: 17

Vitality: 18

Will: 25

London had not been points alone. Two levels. The rest was Tess making me repeat a movement until the passive stopped being a menu and started being a habit.

Pulse Step was no longer only a panic skip. I could clip it short—half a death-line, a shoulder-width, enough to make a swing miss without looking like I had vanished. Second Pulse stayed in the pocket for the line I had already bled on. Quiet Foot was just how I crossed a room when Vein Map ticked.

Returning Tide I ran like a metronome. Move, reclaim, move. Not a heal button. A rhythm. Moving Stitch for the one cut I could not walk off. Clot Memory made London's blunt blade feel like homework the second week.

Iron Quiet and Iron Spine were the ones Tess liked without knowing their names. Stillness in a square. A pack-adjacent hire in her basement trying to rattle me. I did not rattle. Pushback I saved. Held Breath was just breathing.

Vein Map I used as timing, not as fear. Drum close: set feet. Drum far: keep walking. Scarpace I could fire for five heartbeats instead of ten if I cut it early and ate a smaller tremor. Pulse Reflect still sat behind glass. Reflect Discipline meant I could put it down. I still had not pulled the pin. Will 25 made the pin feel less like suicide. It did not make it smart.

Archive ate the bedroom. Highlight only what I tagged.

Year's up. Body finally matches the lie on the paper.

Skills are tools now, not surprises.

Mark: 8.4 km. Closer. He still does not care that I exist.

Tess did not sit in the chair.

She stood in the hall in a coat that meant we were not staying.

"Victor is receiving tonight," she said. "You have completed the year without becoming a caption, an Embrace, or a mess the fire department had to invent a story for. That is rarer than you think. The table wants to look at what it paid for. You will let them. You will not perform. You will not tell them how you arrive a half-step early. You will accept the next work without making a speech about gravel."

"Bigger than envelopes."

"Bigger than envelopes," she said. "Do not look hungry. Hungry is Rafael's hobby."

The salon had no windows. Same six. Same air that had been paid to forget. I walked in like London had taught me: pulse even, eyes on faces, Vein Map ticking cold drums all around and Iron Spine keeping that off my shoulders.

Victor studied me the way he studied furniture that had learned a new trick.

"You left a rumor," he said. "You came back a shape that fits a room. Good. The packs are still sore. Cassian is still loud. The Congregation is still bored, which is the only kindness they offer. We are done hiding you in lobbies."

Rafael's smile was already a plan.

"Docks. Properly this time."

"No," Tess said, mild and final. "Not as a bruise. As a presence. He can stand at noon. He can stand after dark without folding. That is the asset. You do not throw the asset at the first lock that gets bent."

Mara's arms stayed folded.

"The drawer remains closed. No interviews. No old names. If the year made him visible to us, it must not make him visible to Glass."

Silas slid a thin folder across the table. I did not open it yet.

"New paper. Same name. Wider writ. You may enter two more properties. You may carry things we would not give a clerk. You still do not exist on the first page of a search."

Anton nodded once.

"I'll tell the river the roof got taller. They won't like it. They'll respect it until they don't. That's the job."

Victor lifted a glass he did not need.

"Congratulations, Helio King. You survived being interesting long enough to become useful. The next season is not quiet work. It is work that can be seen by the people we allow to see it. You will still refuse the Gift if it is offered in haste. You will still answer Tess first. You will not vanish. If you become a story the evening news can spell, we end the story. If you do not, there are rooms above this one."

Tess's glance was almost private.

"You wanted the year to finish as something other than waiting. Here it is. Take the folder. Look like you expected it."

I took the folder. My hands did not shake. That was training too.

"I hear you," I said. Normal. Flat. The voice that belonged in 2010 and in this room both. "I'm not here to make you a headline."

Rafael laughed under his breath.

"Give it time."

Victor had already looked away. The toast was over. I was moved.

Outside, the city was the same city. Mark still pulling. Archive still filing the salon down to the dust and the thoughts I refused to read.

On the walk back I tagged the only line that mattered.

Level 20. Court says bigger. Tess says don't perform.

I know what the numbers do now. I know what they don't.

Next work won't be a crate.

I did not open Reflect.

I opened the folder under the streetlight instead, and started reading the year that came after the first one.
