Two weeks after the salon toast, the folder had already turned into real hours.
Wider writ. Two extra properties. A noon standing I did not love and a night standing I liked less. Level 20. Body still catching up to London. Mark sitting closer than I wanted to admit.
I was in the townhouse kitchen with coffee when the window slammed open on its own.
Not Status.
Not Petition.
Red.
[EMERGENCY QUEST: SURVIVE LAUNDRY]
Target in proximity.
Failure: death.
Note: claim inversion still applies if another hand finishes him.
I did not get a second line.
The front door did not open. It came off the frame.
He walked in like the house had been a cloakroom. Five-eleven. Darker-than-black hair. Skin that had never bothered with the sun. Model-handsome in the cheap way light loved. Not a drop on him. Vein Map did not drum. It screamed and then went stupid, like the skill had found a pulse that did not qualify as hostile because hostile was too small a word.
Dying Gaze laid him in a grain I had only seen in stacked basements. Supernatural. Signed. Old.
He glanced at me the way you glance at a coat rack.
"You must be the warm one," he said. Mild. Bored. "They mentioned a roof."
I knew the mouth. I knew the height. I had not seen him in this loop. Archive tried to hand me composition, thought, the metal in his buttons. I shut it. I did not need a warehouse to know the quest was already late.
"Tess—"
He was not here for conversation.
The salon was worse because they had time to understand it.
Victor met him in the doorway with Court in his voice and three hundred years of habit. It lasted a breath. Victor was old. He was not that old. The eldest of our table hit the far wall in two pieces that had been a man a second earlier. No speech. No duel. Just the end of a rumor that had thought it ran a city.
Rafael went in smiling. Rafael always went in smiling. He was fast. He was cruel. He was a child in the math. Something that had been Rafael painted the ceiling fixtures. Tess shouted his name like a command. It did not become a command.
Mara did not unfold her arms. She moved. Silver at her wrist, a word that had worked on lesser things. He took the word out of the air and took her throat with the same interest he might give a stain. Silas tried paper, contracts, a name spoken like a chain. The name bounced. Silas did not.
Anton lasted longest because Anton had always thought about exits. Pack-speed, river-dirt, a knife that was not for show. He opened a line across a chest that closed while Anton was still proud of it. Then Anton was on the floor in an arrangement packs would not call kin.
Tess hit him.
Not theater. Not a reminder. She hit him like a woman who had decided the year would not end in her house. Coat ruined. Fangs out. Speed I had only guessed at in London squares. She put him through a chair, through plaster, and for one stupid second I thought the table had bought a pause.
He laughed. Delighted. Weather.
"Almost," Radu said.
He put her down the way he put everything down. She did not get a clever last line. She got the same regard he gave anything weaker than him, which was all of us.
The salon was quiet except for me and the dripping.
I did the year.
Pulse Step along every death-line the room had just grown. Half-clips. Second Pulse. Scarpace for ten heartbeats of Will-fed speed. I arrived where I should not have arrived. I put Strength 19 into him like a parked car with the brake on. He moved a half inch. My shoulder learned a new sound.
Returning Tide ticked. A cut across my ribs started closing. He opened it again without looking.
Iron Quiet held when he said, almost lazily, "Shush." The old lock from the first night I was not supposed to remember slid off me. Pushback shoved the edge of it. His eyebrow went up. Mild interest. Then he broke my stance like interest had expired.
Vein Map was useless. One drum. Everywhere.
I broke the glass on Reflect.
Five heartbeats. Burst inside him. Will against Will.
Will contest: insufficient.
The burst hit me instead. Kinetic, from the inside. I tasted copper and saw the kitchen floor from a bad angle. Reflect Discipline screamed abort. I did not abort. I stacked. Once. Twice. Cap climbing toward a number that would either dump him or dump me.
He watched, head tilted, as if I had produced a card trick at a table that did not play cards.
"Odd blood," he said. "Extravagant. I have been late to a party for less."
The stack dumped.
×10 went into him and vanished into five hundred years like a thrown stone into a river. He did not stagger. I got the quarter heal because he lived. The quarter was a joke. Most of me was already on the wrong side of useful.
I grabbed his coat. Promised myself eyes. Got a handful of clean fabric.
He put his hand through my chest with the same mild boredom he had given the rest of the roof.
"Human," Radu said. "Just die. I have a party to attend to."
The Mark flared. Claim still mine. Kill still not mine to lose. That did not save the body.
The lights went.
[You have died.]
[EMERGENCY QUEST: FAILED]
[Loop point: last intact threshold — 14 days prior]
I came back sitting on the townhouse bed with the Court folder still unopened under the streetlight smell that was not there yet.
Two weeks earlier.
Status clean. Shirt clean. Tess not in the hall yet. Victor still about to toast a year I had just watched end on a carpet.
Red text sat in the corner, fading like it was embarrassed.
[EMERGENCY QUEST will re-arm if target enters proximity.]
[Survive Laundry.]
Archive highlighted before I asked.
He does not know me. He does not care. The table is not a table to him.
Reflect is not enough. Will 25 is not enough.
I have fourteen days.
I put my shoes on.
I did not call it drip. I did not call it furniture.
I called Tess and kept my voice level, 2010-flat, like a man asking about a schedule.
"We need to talk before Victor pours anything," I said. "Not the Gift. Not the docks. Someone is coming through the roof. I need you to listen like I already buried you."
On the other end, a pause that had gold in it.
"Darling," Tess said. "That is a very rude sentence."
"Yeah," I said. "I've got two weeks of rude."
