Chapter 17: Company
The letter announcing the visit arrived on a Friday, which gave House Vaelmoor exactly six days to prepare.
This was, Vivienne would later reflect, either very considerate or very optimistic on Duke Ashveil's part, depending on how one felt about Madame Folliet in a state of motivated urgency.
"Six days," Madame Folliet said, to no one in particular, standing in the center of the entrance hall with a list that had already filled one side of its paper and was working steadily through the other. "Six days, and the east guest wing curtains have not been properly aired since February, and the silver needs polishing, and someone — someone — has allowed the fountain in the courtyard to develop an unseemly amount of moss—"
"It's a natural process," Vivienne offered, from the staircase, where she had paused on her way down to breakfast.
Madame Folliet fixed her with a look that communicated, with great efficiency, that natural processes were not welcome in the Vaelmoor courtyard while guests were expected.
Vivienne continued to breakfast.
Duke Edran received the news with the particular mild pleasure he reserved for things he was genuinely glad about but had no intention of making a fuss over. He read the letter at breakfast, set it beside his coffee, and said: "The Ashveils will be here Thursday. Four days, this time. I've told Aldous."
"The whole family?" Vivienne asked, keeping her voice carefully even.
"The Duke and Alaric," Duke Edran said. "The household staff, naturally."
Caspian looked up from his eggs. "Is the boy coming? The one who got hit with the shoe?"
"And the cake," Rosalind added, with the particular satisfaction of someone who had been waiting months for an opportunity to say this at the breakfast table.
"No one got hit with cake," Vivienne said.
"He did, though," Caspian said thoughtfully. "In the face."
"I think we should move on," Vivienne said.
Duke Edran, at the head of the table, was drinking his coffee with an expression of complete neutrality that Vivienne had come to recognize as the face he made when he was actively choosing not to smile.
She wrote to Alaric that afternoon.
Alaric,
I've been informed you're visiting Thursday. I want to establish some ground rules before you arrive.
First: Caspian knows about the shoe. He will almost certainly bring it up. I recommend ignoring him completely — he loses interest quickly if no one engages.
Second: The east garden is currently undergoing what I'm choosing to call "strategic restructuring" and what the groundskeeper is calling "a disaster." Please don't mention the hedgerow.
Third: The library here is considerably smaller than yours, but there's a section on cartography that I think you'll find interesting. I've already set aside three books I want your opinion on.
I've also been thinking about the edict argument. You were right about the secondary clause — I looked it up. Your tutor was wrong and I think you should tell him so again, more specifically this time, with citations.

P.S. The groundskeeper finally acknowledged the hedgerow this morning. He described it as "leaning." I described it as a structural failure requiring immediate intervention. We have reached an impasse.
The Ashveils arrived on a Thursday that had decided, apparently out of spite, to be the warmest day the season had yet produced — which meant the courtyard was bright and the fountain moss was extremely visible and Madame Folliet had the expression of a woman waging a personal war against the natural world and losing.
Duke Ashveil descended from the carriage with the same unhurried ease he brought to everything, looking around the Vaelmoor estate with the genuine, unperformative interest of someone encountering a place for the first time and actually looking at it. He shook Duke Edran's hand with real warmth, said something that made Aldous laugh — which Vivienne noted, because Aldous very rarely laughed — and then turned to find Vivienne standing at the foot of the entrance steps and smiled at her with the particular smile he seemed to reserve specifically for her.
"Lady Vivienne," he said, with his small, slightly-too-formal bow. "I see you're still wearing both shoes."
"I haven't needed to throw them at anyone recently," Vivienne said. "The season has been peaceful."
"Let's hope it stays that way," Duke Ashveil said, and something in his voice — just briefly, just underneath the warmth — made Vivienne file it away without showing that she had.
Alaric got out of the carriage after his father.
He was taller, Vivienne thought — or maybe she'd simply forgotten, over months of letters, how tall he actually was. He wore travelling clothes rather than formal wear, which made him look fractionally less like a portrait of a future duke and slightly more like a person, though he'd apparently decided to maintain the hands-clasped-behind-the-back posture regardless of occasion.
He looked at the estate. Looked at Vivienne.
"You weren't exaggerating," he said. "About the hedgerow."
Vivienne turned to look at the east garden hedge, which was visible from the courtyard and was, she had to admit, leaning at an angle that could now be generously described as assertive.
"I told you," she said.
"You said structural failure," Alaric said. "I thought you were being dramatic."
"I'm never dramatic," Vivienne said. "I'm precise."
Something that was almost a smile crossed his face — the same almost that she'd catalogued, and kept cataloguing, every time it appeared.
"The hedgerow is dramatic," he said. "You're just reporting accurately."
The first afternoon passed in the easy, unforced way of people who had been corresponding for months and found, to mutual relief, that the person on the other side of the letters was the same as the person in front of them.
Duke Ashveil and Duke Edran disappeared into the study almost immediately — the comfortable retreat of two men who had things to discuss and trusted each other enough to discuss them directly. Cecile organized tea. Caspian materialized from somewhere and began explaining to Alaric, with enormous enthusiasm and no particular accuracy, the structural history of the Vaelmoor estate's towers.
Alaric listened with the careful, patient attention he brought to everything, asked two questions that were considerably more architecturally informed than anything Caspian had said, and earned himself Caspian's immediate and unconditional respect.
"He's alright," Caspian told Vivienne, in what he clearly thought was a whisper, while Alaric was examining a tapestry in the entrance hall.
"High praise," Vivienne said.
"Better than I expected," Caspian said, entirely seriously. "He knows about load-bearing walls."
It was Cecile who started it.
In her defense — and Vivienne would later be very generous with this defense — she had simply been trying to find something for four children of varying ages to do on a warm afternoon in a house where the adults were occupied and Madame Folliet had already banned Caspian from the east corridor three times before lunch.
What she'd found was a set of lawn games in the storage room off the east garden — wooden rings and pins, a set of bocce balls, and, at the very back, a slightly battered croquet set that had clearly not seen daylight in several years.
"Outside," Cecile announced, appearing in the entrance hall with her arms full of equipment, radiating the cheerful, implacable energy of someone who had made a decision and would not be argued with. "All of you. Fresh air."
Caspian was already out the door.
Rosalind, who had been attempting to read in the window seat, looked at the croquet set with the expression of someone weighing dignity against boredom and deciding, reluctantly, that boredom had won.
Vivienne looked at Alaric.
Alaric looked at the croquet mallet Cecile was holding out toward him with the expression of a person encountering an object he recognized but had perhaps never been expected to use in a social context.
"Have you played before?" Vivienne asked.
"No," Alaric said.
"Neither have I," Vivienne said. "Cecile, do you know the rules?"
"Roughly," Cecile said, which meant not really but she wasn't going to let that stop her.
The croquet that followed was, by any formal measure, not croquet.
Cecile explained the rules as she understood them, which turned out to be approximately sixty percent accurate, with the remaining forty percent filled in by Caspian, who was making things up with the confident energy of someone who knew no one present could correct him. Rosalind objected to the wicket placement. Alaric asked three very specific questions about scoring that no one could answer and then quietly decided to optimize for the rules as stated rather than arguing about the ones that were wrong.
Vivienne, for her part, had discovered that hitting a wooden ball with a mallet was substantially more satisfying than it had any right to be.
"You're holding it wrong," Alaric said, from somewhere behind her left shoulder.
"I'm getting results," Vivienne said.
"You knocked it into the hedgerow."
"The hedgerow is in the wrong place."
"The hedgerow is leaning into the playing field," Alaric agreed, with the air of someone recording evidence for an ongoing argument. "Which is a structural failure, as you said."
"Thank you," Vivienne said.
"I was agreeing with you, not complimenting you."
"I know," Vivienne said. "I'm choosing to take it as both."
Alaric looked at her for a moment with that expression she was beginning to catalogue separately — not the almost-smile, but something quieter. Something that happened when she said something he hadn't expected and he was deciding what to do with it.
Then he moved around to her side, and without asking — not quite instruction, more demonstration — adjusted the angle of the mallet slightly in her hands, the correction so brief and impersonal that it barely registered as contact, except that it did register, in the particular way things registered with Vivienne when she filed them away for later rather than examining them immediately.
"Try that," he said, stepping back.
She swung.
The ball sailed through the wicket cleanly, bounced twice on the grass, and came to rest exactly where she'd intended it.
From across the lawn, Caspian made a noise of genuine alarm. Rosalind paused her argument with Cecile about the rules to look. Cecile pressed her hand to her chest with the expression of someone experiencing an emotion too large to immediately categorize.
Vivienne looked at the ball. Looked back at Alaric.
"Better," he said.
"Much," she agreed.
And then Duke Edran appeared at the garden door — drawn, presumably, by whatever combination of shouting and laughter had found its way through the study windows — and surveyed the scene before him: the leaning hedgerow, the scattered wickets, Caspian already arguing with Rosalind, Cecile refereeing with cheerful inaccuracy, Vivienne standing on the lawn in her afternoon dress with a croquet mallet and grass on her shoes.
He looked at all of it for a moment.
Then he looked at Duke Ashveil, who had appeared beside him in the doorway.
"Do you play?" Duke Edran said.
"Terribly," Duke Ashveil said, with great cheer. "Shall we?"
It was, Vivienne would think later, one of those afternoons that stayed with you — not because anything remarkable happened, but because of the particular, unguarded quality of it. The way Duke Edran laughed when Duke Ashveil's ball ricocheted off the leaning hedgerow and knocked over two wickets simultaneously. The way Alaric played with complete seriousness and still lost to Caspian, who had been changing the rules every three turns. The way Cecile sat on the garden bench and watched all of it with her permanently bright eyes and didn't say anything, because she didn't need to.
Vivienne won.
This was not an accident — she had been calculating angles quietly for the last forty minutes — but she let Caspian believe it was luck, because Caspian was nine and needed the occasional illusion of being the most strategically capable person in the garden.
"Beginner's luck," Caspian announced.
"Absolutely," Vivienne agreed.
Alaric looked at her sideways. She looked back. He said nothing. She said nothing. The afternoon moved on.
That evening, while the rest of the household settled into the comfortable winding-down of a long day, Vivienne found herself passing the study and hearing, through the half-open door, the particular quality of silence that meant the conversation inside had reached something significant.
She did not stop.
She did not press herself against the wall and listen, the way she had in the Ashveil passage.
She told herself this was because she had learned her lesson about overhearing conversations not meant for her.
She walked past at a pace that was — she was being honest with herself — somewhat slower than her usual.
"—confirmed," Duke Edran's voice said, low and even. "As of last week."
"How close?" Duke Ashveil's voice.
"Closer than I'd like." A pause. "He's been moving things. People, assets. The investigators think he knew we were watching before we thought he did."
"He's preparing for something."
"Or running from something," Duke Edran said. "I can't tell yet which."
A longer pause.
"Your children," Duke Ashveil said. "Are they—"
"Safe," Duke Edran said. Immediately. Completely certain. "I've made arrangements. Nothing will reach them."
Vivienne had reached the end of the corridor.
She turned the corner, and walked to the nursery, and sat on the edge of her bed, and thought.
Duke Ashter knew he was being watched.
Duke Ashter was moving.
Nothing will reach them, her father had said, in the voice he used when he'd already made a decision and was not going to be argued out of it.
She believed him. She did.
But she had also, in this life and the last, learned the particular danger of believing that the people who loved you could protect you from everything — and she had learned it in the most thorough possible way, in a carriage in the dark, with her wrist aching and her tears dried to salt on her cheeks.
I need to be paying attention, she thought. Whatever he's planning. I need to be paying attention.
She sat with that for a while, in the quiet of the nursery.
Then she heard, from somewhere below, the distant sound of Caspian still arguing about the croquet scores, and Cecile's patient voice explaining for the third time why the hedgerow collision did not count as a valid turn, and Duke Ashveil's laugh carrying easily through the floorboards.
She breathed in.
Breathed out.
Tonight, she told herself, tonight I'm allowed to just be here.
She went back downstairs.
Alaric was in the library when she found him — not her father's study, but the smaller sitting room that housed the Vaelmoor collection, standing at the shelves with his hands behind his back in his usual posture, reading spines with the focused attention of someone doing an actual inventory.
"The cartography section," he said, without turning around.
"Yes," Vivienne said.
"You weren't wrong. Third shelf, the atlas with the annotated northern territories — that's a first edition."
"I know," Vivienne said, coming to stand beside him. "That's one of the three I set aside for you."
He turned then, and looked at her, and whatever he saw in her face made something shift in his expression — the quiet, particular alertness she'd noticed before, the one that meant he was paying attention to the thing she hadn't said rather than the thing she had.
"Are you alright?" he asked.
It was a direct question. No softening, no preamble. The way he asked everything.
Vivienne considered whether to answer it directly.
"I heard something," she said, which was true and was also all she was going to say.
Alaric was quiet for a moment.
"About Ashter," he said. Not a question.
"Your father told you?"
"My father tells me the things he thinks I'm old enough to know," Alaric said, "and I work out the rest." A pause. "He's moving. We know that."
"Your father told mine tonight."
"I know." Alaric looked back at the shelves. "My father says the empire moves slowly with someone of Ashter's rank. That it takes time to build a case that can't be dismantled."
"I know," Vivienne said. "I just—" she stopped.
"You don't like waiting," Alaric said.
"I don't like not knowing what I'm waiting for," Vivienne said. "There's a difference."
"Yes," Alaric said. "There is."
He reached up and took the first-edition atlas from the shelf — carefully, the way he handled all books — and held it out to her.
"Show me the annotations," he said. "The northern territories."
It wasn't a solution. It wasn't reassurance, or a promise, or any of the things that might have felt hollow in that moment.
It was simply: here, something real, something we can look at together.
Vivienne took the atlas.
They sat down at the small table by the window — the one that caught the last of the evening light — and opened it to the northern territories, and Vivienne pointed out the annotations, and Alaric asked questions, and somewhere in the quiet back-and-forth of that, the weight in her chest eased.
Not gone. But eased.
Outside the window, the evening settled over the Vaelmoor estate — warm and still, the garden in shadow now, the leaning hedgerow invisible in the dark.
Tomorrow, Vivienne thought, there would be more to figure out. More to watch for. More to understand about a man who was moving pieces in the dark and knew he was being seen.
But tonight there was lamplight, and an atlas with careful handwritten notes in the margins, and someone sitting across from her who had ridden through the night once and would, she suspected, do it again if it came to that.
Tonight, she told herself again, this is enough.
And it was.
