The bus rumbled to life, pulling away from the curb. I stared out the window, the familiar streets blurring past. The morning sunlight, which had seemed so hopeful just moments ago, now felt like a spotlight, exposing me to unseen eyes.
I reached into my bag and pulled out my laptop, balancing it precariously on my knees. I needed to do some digging of my own, starting with Agent Walker. I connected to the bus's public Wi-Fi and began my search, typing her name into the search engine.
A few articles popped up, mostly press releases and conference appearances. Agent Emily Walker, CDC Special Pathogens Branch. She seemed legitimate enough, a dedicated public servant with years of experience in infectious disease control.
But something still felt off. David's gut feeling, my own unease... I couldn't shake the feeling that she was hiding something.
