Chapter 21 - Speed is of the Essence

It is a race against time to see who will take control of the monster. Shield agents came prepared with advanced technology, but it will do nothing against the monster of the night. Unless Shield can find the weakness before the arrival of MTF, there will be catastrophic consequences.

The Silencers had already come up with a game plan on their way to Queens, since they needed to use light, but not enough that it would make it teleport out. They are planning on trapping it between a line and pushing it into the back of a sealed van with no light. The problem being the light will attract all sorts of nuisances and will require the light to be fairly powerful.

The captain of the guards had been notified on their ride over as well and had been tasked with acquiring the lights while the MTF kept 280 contained within Queens. They had with them a couple of D-Class that they were planning on using to lure in 280.

Meanwhile, 280 was still going on its brutality streak as it moved from house to house. It encountered resistance at some point, but it didn't really do much. The butchered remains left behind were used to track the newest sighting as officers and agents tried to encircle the unknown being. The officers were unwilling to step anywhere near the mysterious killer, but were forced to. Many officers had already died at the hands of the killer, and they had yet to catch much other than its shadow.

At some point, Shield gave up and allowed the officers to establish an outer perimeter while agents kept looking inwards. Fury had been overseeing the operation ever since the abnormal reports came in, and he already knew whatever they were fighting required superhuman abilities. Still, he couldn't allow it to escape the circle. He also knew he couldn't let his guard down because of Ant.

Tony has been awake all nigh thoroughly enjoying himself in certain luxuries. He was made aware of the news after he was done and was on his phone. He saw the news and at first assumed they wouldn't need his help, seeing as many officers showed up, but as time passed and nothing came of it except more deaths, Tony donned his suit and left for Queens, which was close.

If one were to step out there home in Queens that night, they would be greeted by armed individuals, blood and gore on the streets, as well as spotlights. It was unusual as it is for officers to respond to people dying in Queens, but now there was a government agency directly involved. It would be a day queens will never forget, as for once in its modern history, the officers and government did something helpful for the community, at the cost of many lives.

Young Peter was pulled out of his house, still traumatized, and was kept with other survivors at a temporary camp. They had been asked questions and transported to hospitals as fast as they could to check for injuries and mental well-being. Peter had spoken between tears earlier, but eventually stopped talking completely, and his eyes stared into nothing. He had become an orphan in the middle of the night again; he was replaying the scene of Aunt May and Uncle Ben's death in his head, or how he believed it happened while he was not in the room. He couldn't cry anymore; it hurt to cry, and every time a tear slipped out, it would make him think of his uselessness for not helping.

The lucky survivors all reported the same things: a shadow had killed them or something extremely dark and left soon after it was noticed. Shield had received these witness accounts and assumed that if it was noticed by someone, it would run away; they assumed that because some had omitted the light part, while some had not, but the consensus was that when they saw it didn't attack them; instead, it disappeared into the night.

Some agents managed to spot 280 and had reported that what they were looking for was definitely not human. After the confirmation, the agents stopped going out with normal weapons; they carried weapons that had been tested on the Kree body. Clint Barton and Natasha were also removed from their previous assignments and ordered to hunt down the non-human killer. Natasha and Clint moved their way to the newest death reported and hunted down 280.

MTF The Silencers had also arrived already, but were lying low, readying the D-Class and waiting for the guards to return with powerful flashlights. They had been keeping an eye out in case 280 suddenly appeared, but so far, nothing has happened except the occasional agents passing by.

The moon was a waxing crescent, and the figure of the one and only Iron Man was plastered in front of it. Fury had contacted him as soon as he was airborne and told him not to get involved, as they didn't know what they were dealing with, but Tony didn't really listen. He instead flew up above and waited for it to appear in his scans of the area. It showed up on thermal scans by the newest corpse as it lost heat on the scan, so Tony made his way in that direction, considering the time since death.

280 noticed Tony approaching, so he waited to strike. When Tony was close enough, 280 lunged and slashed with his nails, leaving a mark on the armor. After the attack, Tony fired his repulsors, but they phased right through 280. Tony didn't panic, though he moved in closer for a punch of pure metal. He went right through 280 again, and 280 retaliated when Tony passed through him and slashed downwards, sending him down. Natasha and Clint noticed the scuffle and approached fast. Natasha went for a kick, but her senses went off, and she pivoted to jump instead, as a slash sliced the concrete she was standing on. Clint nocked an arrow and released it, hitting right where the head should be, but it phased once more.

Tony stood up and shot his repulsors again, but this time 280 didn't take it head-on and instead backed off. Fury had already mobilized the agents to surround 280, and as they did, more light was brought, greatly reducing 280's attack sides. Natasha and Tony both realised light caused 280 to avoid areas.

"Point the lights at it!" Tony shouted, and as he did, he shot his repulsors at 280 again, but not at it, instead around it. As the agents directed their light at 280, it moved out of the way and was hit by the repulsor shot that phased through it again, but it noticeably made it "hurt". Clint shot a fire arrow that exploded behind it. 280 teleported due to the sudden increase in brightness, and it revealed its eyes, which caused a shiver to run down the agent's spine.

By this point, the Guards had returned with strong lights, so the MTF got to work and started moving. The guards had new orders now, which were to dismantle the Shield formation and keep the MTF covered as they initiated Lighted Path.

280 had teleported but not far, and it made its way to the nearest human again. The human who was going to be attacked was a site guard. It slashed and impaled him with nails, then it slammed him against the wall as he exploded and made a hole in the wall. The other guards that had been making their way over quickly shone their lights on it and forced it to teleport again. The MTF didn't waste time and moved further into the dark while the guards continued. Both sides met head-on, and the guards shot first, then Shield did. Clint was still with the other agents, so he nocked explosive arrows and unleashed explosions onto the guards. The guards broke up in the explosions, but they didn't let off their firepower and launched their own grenades, and other goodies. Natasha didnt stay behind as she made her way to 280 with Tony; she had confidence that Clint had it covered.

The Class-D was mauled by 280, and the mtf illuminated the path that they needed 280 to follow. Tony and Natasha appeared and were put under fire, except Tony, who lunged. The MTF had been prepared for slip-ups and split up as some stayed behind to fight Tony and Natasha, while the rest lured away 280. The other D-Class were strapped with grenades and forced into suicide bombing to cover the split MTF as they fought the tough opponents. Natasha's acrobatics quickly forced the agents to regroup while Tony kept shooting his repulsors and other gadgets. Some had already been wounded by the explosions, while Natasha kept avoiding the suicide bombs that were going off, blasting her into the sky and every other way as if she were a leaf in the wind.

Queens transformed from a game of catch to a warzone real fast as casualties mounted for both sides. Fury was correct in his judgment beforehand, and thus had prepared a secret weapon that would hopefully solve 2 problems at once.
