Zoe's POV
"See you tomorrow night. Break a leg."
The words glowed on my screen like a curse.
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe. My fingers tightened around the phone so hard that my knuckles hurt. The street suddenly felt colder, narrower, and heavier, as if the walls were closing in on me.
Garrett noticed my expression immediately.
"What is it?" he asked carefully.
I didn't answer.
I could hardly speak. Slowly, I lifted the phone toward him. His eyes scanned the message once, then twice. I watched as his Adam's apple bobbed.
"Zoe..." he whispered.
I shook my head instantly, confusion crashing into panic. "How is Casey sending me something like this?" My voice trembled. "See you tomorrow? Break a leg? Is she trying to mock me or what?" Nothing made sense anymore. Nothing.
Garrett scratched the back of his neck, thinking fast. Too fast. I hated it when he did that because it meant something was wrong.
"What if Casey isn't the blackmailer?" he said slowly.
