The moment felt so warm that my chest tightened again. Seeing them laugh like that after everything that had happened earlier that day felt like a small miracle. For a moment, the room was peaceful again as everyone continued eating.
Then Hanith suddenly grew quiet.
I noticed the thoughtful look slowly appearing on his small face. He lowered the pizza slice he had been holding and looked toward Aaron again, as if something important had just come to his mind.
He called Aaron softly, testing the word "Dad" as if he was still getting used to saying it.
Aaron looked at him. "Yes?"
"When are you taking us to the amusement park?"
Jasmine quickly joined in. "Yes!" Aaron raised his eyebrows.
"Oh, really?" Jasmine nodded. "Mommy and Uncle Mathew take us sometimes," she explained. "But most kids go with their dad."
Hanith added quickly in a mumble. "So we want to go with you too." Aaron looked at both of them for a long moment. Then he smiled warmly.
