I was swirling the wine in my glass, letting the music fill the room, my heart still racing with excitement over the latest update. The call had come in just an hour ago, and I could barely contain myself. The twins had been taken, and all I had to do now was wait for the next instructions to make sure everything went smoothly. I leaned back, grinning, feeling that delicious thrill of power. "Finally," I whispered to myself. "Let her see… let Katherine understand what happens when you try to hijack someone else's husband."
I poured myself another glass, and just as I was about to raise it in a little toast to myself, the doorbell rang. My heart skipped a beat, not in fear, but in that quick spark of surprise, and I set my glass down slowly. Who could it be at this hour? I went to the door and peeked, seeing two uniformed officers standing there. My stomach fluttered for a second, but I forced a calm smile.
