Since the people before him were indeed the Avatar and his companions — and they had even put down their weapons at his request — the Earth King finally said.
"Then I will listen to what you have to say."
Chang Feng, Lord of Agni Kai, darkened at those words. But considering the situation, he kept quiet.
Seeing the Earth King willing to listen, Aang stepped forward.
"Your Majesty, a great war is underway. In fact, this war has been going on for a hundred years. The Dai Li have been hiding the truth from you, and they've conspired to control both you and the entire city!"
"A war I don't know about? That's too ridiculous," the Earth King said, clearly unconvinced. He didn't believe anything could be hidden from him.
"That's right — complete nonsense," Chang Feng sneered.
Seeing the man's confidence, Aang frowned and pointed directly at him.
"Not only that, he's been secretly controlling and threatening the citizens through brainwashing, forbidding anyone from mentioning the war inside the city!"
Chang Feng's expression turned pitch black for a moment — then he schooled his features and looked at the Earth King innocently.
"It's all lies, Your Majesty. I know nothing about brainwashing. Honestly, I can't imagine where they came up with something so absurd."
The Earth King nodded, agreeing with Chang Feng's words.
"Even if you are the Avatar, it's hard for me to believe you unless you can provide convincing evidence."
"Of course there's evidence!" Aang said firmly.
"We've found the place where the Dai Li conduct their brainwashing. If you come with us, you'll understand everything we said is true!"
Chang Feng's heart dropped.
They found Lake Laogai?! When?! How?! Why didn't those useless agents report anything?!
His face turned ashen. He quickly addressed the Earth King:
"Your Majesty, what they're saying is baseless. And it's so late already — forcing you to go to such a remote location at night sounds suspicious. I fear they might have ulterior motives!"
"Hm."The Earth King pondered, then said.
"The Prime Minister has a point. And as the Earth King, there's no reason for me to go out at night."
"We'll go tomorrow."
"Tomorrow?!" Aang nearly collapsed. How could this possibly wait until tomorrow?
At that moment, Kahn finally spoke.
"I swear… you people still don't understand the situation."
Listening to the Earth King and Chang Feng take turns with their nonsense almost made him laugh from anger.
No wonder Azula was constantly irritated dealing with idiots — some people really were infuriating.
Kahn had zero respect for the Earth King. He'd only come because Aang insisted on "talking" to him. Now? He was done playing along.
"Whether you go or not isn't up to you." Kahn blurred forward, Chi Blocking both men in an instant.
He grabbed the Earth King in one hand, Chang Feng in the other, and marched toward Appa.
"Kahn! What are you doing?!" Aang and the others nearly fainted at the violent display.
"I am the Earth King! You cannot treat me this way!" the Earth King screamed.
Kahn ignored him completely and tossed both men onto Appa's back like sacks of grain.
He turned to the others with a bright (and terrifying) smile.
"Let's go. Time to show the Earth King the evidence."
Gulp.
Kahn's smile looked more demonic than cheerful. Everyone swallowed hard. Angry Kahn was truly frightening.
They flew to Lake Laogai. Katara and Toph were already waiting near the lake with several unconscious Dai Li agents — the brainwashing staff — bound on the ground.
Kahn had instructed them to guard the area to prevent any evidence from being destroyed, and they had done so perfectly.
Upon landing, Kahn grabbed Chang Feng and casually tossed him off Appa again.
He hit the ground with a painful groan. Aang panicked and quickly helped the Earth King down before Kahn could throw him too.
"You're finally here… What happened?" Katara asked, confused after seeing Chang Feng sprawled on the ground and the Earth King trembling.
"Nothing. Aang, take him to see it," Kahn said.
"Yes, sir!" Aang rushed off with Toph to guide the Earth King inside.
"Kahn is angry…" Sokka whispered to Katara, explaining everything.
Nearby, Zuko whispered to Iroh.
"Uncle… doesn't Kahn look kind of like Azula when he's angry?"
"…He does," Iroh admitted.
When Kahn glanced at them, both immediately shut up.
In truth, Kahn's initial anger had already cooled. There was no point being mad at a fool. Seeing everyone terrified of him now was almost amusing.
Was he really that scary?
After a while, Aang, Toph, and the Earth King emerged from Lake Laogai.
The Earth King looked completely devastated, trembling as if his worldview had collapsed.
Seeing Chang Feng on the ground again, the Earth King pointed at him, furious.
"You villain! You deceived me for so long! I sentence you for treason!"
Chang Feng closed his eyes in resignation. Everything was exposed.
The Earth King then insisted on personally inspecting the outer walls of Ba Sing Se — and the war reality there was undeniable.
When the general guarding the walls saw Iroh among them… he nearly fainted.
"I am very grateful that you showed me the truth," the Earth King said back at the palace.
"The prosperous and 'great' Ba Sing Se I believed in… was nothing but a city of fools. And I was the greatest fool of all — a puppet my entire life."
"We are actually fighting the Fire Nation."
His regret was deep. Seeing this, Kahn revised his opinion of the man slightly. Foolish as he was, at least he could admit mistakes — and fix them.
Next, they discussed matters concerning the Fire Nation and met the Earth Kingdom's other major authority: the Council of Five.
The Council of Five consisted of Earth Kingdom generals. Unlike Chang Feng, they were genuinely loyal — and the true backbone of the Earth Kingdom.
They had spent years fighting the Fire Nation outside the city and were unaware that the Earth King had long been sidelined.
Chang Feng was imprisoned to await trial. After General Hao raided his residence, several important documents were found:
• A letter from Toph's parents — they were in Ba Sing Se and wished to see her.
• A military report: A Water Tribe force was defending Chameleon Bay. Its commander was Hakoda, Katara and Sokka's father.
With Ba Sing Se's situation resolved, Aang also needed to travel to the Eastern Air Temple to meet Guru Pathik and learn to control the Avatar State.
But someone had to remain in Ba Sing Se to coordinate with the Earth Kingdom military.
Kahn raised his hand.
"Zuko, Uncle Iroh, and I will stay. We don't have anything else to do anyway."
Both Zuko and Iroh nodded in agreement.
But when the Earth King heard that Kahn would be staying in the city…
He swallowed hard.
He was terrified.
