Erik sat behind his desk, quill poised above the parchment, when a knock interrupted the silence. "Enter," he called out, expecting one of his advisors. A hesitant voice floated across the room. "Erik, it's me, Diana." Erik's gaze lifted, meeting Diana's uncertain eyes. He set down his quill, his expression softening. "Lady Diana, do come in. I had hoped to speak with you."
Diana entered, her steps measured, her eyes searching his face. Erik's eyes followed her, noting the faint signs of distress she tried to hide. "How do you fare, Erik?" he asked, his tone gentle, trying to put her at ease.
Diana's eyes dropped, her voice barely above a whisper. "I am well, Your Highness. I... I heard of your marriage. To Sophia." Her words hung in the air, filled with unspoken questions and emotions.
Erik's expression turned solemn. "Lady Diana, my marriage was... a necessity. A duty, no more." He chose his words carefully, knowing they might cause her pain, but hoping to minimize it.
Diana's eyes flashed up, a hint of pain lingering there. "A necessity, Your Highness?" Her voice trembled slightly, betraying her attempt to stay composed.
Erik took a step closer, his voice low and soothing. "Diana, you deserve a gentleman who can devote himself to you entirely. I am not that man. Forgive me." He paused, letting his words sink in. "I know we had... moments, but they were fleeting. You are worthy of more."
Diana's eyes dropped again, a mix of emotions playing on her face. "I thought... I thought perhaps there was something between us, Erik." Her voice was barely audible, filled with a sadness that pained Erik.
Erik sighed, feeling a pang of regret. "Diana, I value you greatly, but as a friend, nothing more. My duty is to my kingdom, and Sophia is part of that duty." He paused, choosing his next words carefully. "But I hope we can remain friends, Diana. You are a kind soul, and I would hate to lose your friendship."
Diana looked up, a hint of tears gl gling in her eyes. "I... I would like that, Erik." Her voice was soft, resigned.
Erik smiled gently, relieved. "Then it's settled. We remain friends, and you will find someone worthy of your love, Diana." He offered her a small smile, hoping to ease the tension.
Diana managed a weak smile in return. "Thank you, Erik. For understanding." She curtsied, her movements stiff, and turned to leave.
Erik watched her go, a mix of emotions swirling inside him. He had done what was necessary, but it didn't make it any easier. As the door closed behind Diana, he sighed, turning back to his papers, his mind now on Sophia, his bride.
He wondered how she was settling into her new role as his princess. Given her own royal upbringing, he had little doubt she'd adjust quickly. Sophia was a princess, accustomed to the intrigues of court life, even if this was a vampire kingdom.
The silence of the room enveloped him, and Erik's thoughts turned to the upcoming welcome ball. Would Sophia shine among the nobles and courtiers? He had little doubt she would.
With a flick of his wrist, Erik resumed writing, his quill scratching against the parchment as he lost himself in the words, pushing aside thoughts of Diana and Sophia for the moment.
On the other end, as Kate entered the chamber, the aroma of roasted meats and freshly baked bread wafted through the air, making Sophia's stomach purr with anticipation. She set the tray down on the table, curtsying low. "Dinner, Your Highness. I brought some of Cook's specialties."
Sophia's eyes lit up, and she dove into the meal with gusto, savoring each bite. The tender meat melted in her mouth, and the flavors danced on her tongue. Kate smiled, pleased that the princess was enjoying her food. As Sophia ate, Kate busied herself tidying up the room, her eyes occasionally flicking to the princess.
The silence between them was comfortable, a stark contrast to the awkwardness Sophia had felt earlier with Prince Erik. She couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to live in this castle, surrounded by strangers who were fast becoming familiar faces.
As she took a bite of the succulent chicken, Sophia's mind began to wander. Do vampires eat human food? She'd never seen any of the vampires from the neighboring kingdoms eat, but that didn't necessarily mean they didn't. Maybe they just didn't eat in front of humans. The thought sent a shiver down her spine. What if they were watching her, waiting for her to slip up?
Sophia's gaze flicked to Kate, who was busy sorting through the princess's dresses. Kate seemed human enough, but what if she was just pretending? Sophia shook her head, chiding herself for being paranoid. Kate was just a maid, trying to do her job.
As Sophia slowed her pace, Kate spoke up, "Your Highness, about the welcome ball tomorrow... I don't thinkuj Prince Erik has mentioned anything about a dress for you. Shall I prepare one for you, just in case?"
Sophia nodded, her eyes sparkling with a hint of mischief. "Yes, please. The blue silk gown, I think. I've heard it's a favorite among the ladies of the court."
Kate's eyes widened slightly, impressed by Sophia's taste. "An excellent choice, Your Highness. You have a keen eye for fashion."
Sophia smiled, feeling a sense of satisfaction. Maybe she would be able to navigate this new life after all. "Thank you, Kate. I'm glad I have you to help me."
Kate's cheeks flushed with pleasure. "It's my pleasure, Your Highness. I'll make sure you're looking stunning for the ball."
As they chatted, Sophia couldn't help but ask, "Kate, how's the atmosphere here? I mean, among the staff and the nobles?"
Kate's expression turned thoughtful. "It's... complicated, Your Highness. The staff is mostly kind, but there are some who whisper and gossip. And the nobles... well, they're a different breed altogether."
Sophia's ears perked up, intrigued. "What do you mean?"
Kate leaned in, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Some of them aren't happy about Prince Erik's marriage to you. They think you're... beneath him."
Sophia's eyes narrowed, a spark of defiance igniting within her. "Beneath him? I'm a princess, Kate. I'm not beneath anyone."
Kate's eyes widened, and she quickly added, "Of course, Your Highness. I meant no disrespect. It's just... some people have old-fashioned ideas about royal bloodlines and alliances."
Sophia's expression softened, understanding dawning on her. "I see. Well, I'll just have to prove them wrong, won't I?"
Kate smiled, admiration shining in her eyes. "I'm sure you will, Your Highness. Now, finish your meal, and let's get you ready for bed. Tomorrow's going to be a long day."
As Sophia finished her meal, Kate helped her prepare for bed, chatting idly about the castle's quirks and the staff's eccentricities. Sophia laughed, feeling a sense of belonging she'd never experienced before.
As Kate curtsied and took her leave, Sophia settled into bed, feeling a sense of determination wash over her. She would make this new life work, no matter what if it meant marrying a vampire prince. She would be strong, she would be brave, and she would be worthy of her title.
