The mark didn't dim.
If anything, it grew brighter.
The fractured stone around it pulsed in uneven rhythms, like something beneath the surface was struggling to break through. The purple veins that had once been thin now swelled thick and alive, crawling outward across the wall and spilling into the floor in branching patterns that resembled roots searching for something to consume. Every pulse carried a faint vibration through the chamber, subtle but constant, like a heartbeat that didn't belong to anything human.
Ryuji stood a step away from it, head tilted slightly, studying the phenomenon with the same interest he once reserved for rare boss mechanics in games. His posture remained relaxed, but his eyes were sharper now, tracking the rhythm, the movement, the changes.
"…So," he said casually, rolling his shoulder once as if warming up. "It talks now."
Kaelina didn't take her eyes off the mark. Her sword was already in hand, blade angled slightly forward, her stance grounded and ready. "You heard something," she said, voice steady but edged with tension.
"Yeah."
"What did it say?"
Ryuji's grin tugged faintly at the corner of his mouth. "Called me interesting."
Darek let out a slow breath through his nose, shifting his grip on his greatsword. "That's not the kind of attention I'd want from whatever the hell this is."
Lumi didn't respond immediately.
She didn't snap, didn't complain, didn't insult him like she usually would. Instead, she hovered there in mid-air, wings pausing for just a fraction too long as her gaze moved from the mark to Ryuji and back again. That hesitation alone was enough to change the mood.
"…That's not good," she said quietly.
Ryuji shrugged, unbothered. "Sounds like I made a fan."
"No," Lumi replied flatly, her expression tightening. "You got noticed."
Elrica swallowed, instinctively stepping a little closer to Kaelina as her fingers tightened around her staff. "By… what exactly?"
Lumi exhaled slowly, forcing herself to stay composed. Her eyes drifted back to the mark, narrowing slightly as if trying to read something deeper within it. "The Abyss doesn't watch people randomly," she said. "It reacts to anomalies. Things that don't belong. Things that disrupt the natural flow."
Ryuji tapped his chest lightly with a knuckle. "Guess that's me."
"Yes," Lumi snapped instantly. "That is you."
He grinned wider, clearly pleased with himself. "Nice."
She dragged her hands down her face in frustration. "Why are you like this?"
"Positive mindset."
"You're flirting with cosmic horror," she shot back.
Ryuji shrugged again. "If it's watching, it might as well enjoy the show."
Darek snorted despite himself, shaking his head. "Man's got a point."
Kaelina shot him a sharp look. "No. He does not."
The dungeon shifted again.
This time it wasn't subtle for long.
The ground beneath their feet trembled lightly at first, then steadied into a low, constant vibration. Dust trickled from the ceiling in thin streams, and the purple veins along the walls pulsed faster—erratic now, unstable, as if something beneath the surface was waking up and stretching.
Elrica flinched slightly, her voice tightening. "The mana's spiking… it's getting denser."
Ryuji's vision flickered.
A brief distortion, like static sliding across his sight.
Then—
A system window snapped into place.
[Foreign Authority Detected]
[System Interference Attempt Logged]
[Analyzing…]
Ryuji blinked once, then let out a quiet, amused breath. "…Oh. That's new."
Lumi froze mid-air.
"No."
Ryuji glanced at her. "You keep saying that a lot."
"Because it shouldn't be happening!" she snapped, her voice rising as she pointed at the screen only he could see. "That means something in here is trying to interact with your system!"
Kaelina turned sharply toward them. "Explain."
Ryuji scratched his cheek lazily. "System says something's poking it."
Darek's expression hardened. "That sounds like a problem."
"It's worse than a problem," Lumi said, grabbing Ryuji by the collar and yanking him down slightly so she could glare directly into his eyes. "That means whatever is inside this dungeon isn't just corrupted—it has authority."
Ryuji paused.
Then slowly smiled.
"…So it's strong."
Lumi shook him once. "That's not the takeaway!"
"Feels like the takeaway."
"You're going to get us killed!"
"Relax."
The system flickered again.
[Interference Rejected]
[Gamer System Stable]
Ryuji straightened, brushing imaginary dust off his shoulder. "See? Still working."
Lumi released him slowly, though her expression didn't soften. "…For now."
The shadows moved again.
But this time, they didn't lash out or rush forward.
They stretched.
Clung to the walls and ceiling like living things, expanding slowly, deliberately, as if testing the space around them. The darkness thickened in unnatural patches, pooling in corners where no light should have been able to reach.
Ryuji's grin faded slightly—not from fear, but focus. His body shifted subtly, weight distributing more evenly, muscles loosening in preparation.
"…Alright," he muttered. "This one's different."
Kaelina stepped forward, placing herself between the group and the largest concentration of shadow. "Formation," she said firmly.
Darek moved beside her without hesitation, greatsword resting over his shoulder but ready.
Elrica stepped back, staff glowing faintly as she gathered mana.
Lumi hovered closer to Ryuji now, unusually quiet.
Then—
A whisper brushed against his ear.
Soft.
Close.
Too close.
You are… strange…
Ryuji didn't flinch.
Didn't turn immediately.
He exhaled slowly, as if considering the voice.
"…You talk a lot for something hiding," he said under his breath.
Kaelina snapped her gaze toward him. "What?"
Ryuji turned his head slightly.
The shadows behind him twisted.
Then peeled away from the wall.
The creature didn't rush.
It stepped forward.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Its form was clearer than the last one—still made of layered shadow, but more defined, more stable. Its limbs were longer, dragging slightly against the ground as if weighed down by something unseen. Its head tilted at an unnatural angle, studying him with glowing violet eyes that seemed almost… curious.
Abyss Stalker – Lv.12
"…Same thing as before?" Darek muttered, tightening his grip.
Lumi shook her head slowly, her voice tense. "…No. It's not the same."
The creature took another step forward.
Then another.
Its gaze never left Ryuji.
You… are not… correct…
Ryuji smirked faintly. "Yeah. I get that a lot."
Then it vanished.
This time, there was no transition.
No ripple.
No shadow movement.
It simply ceased to exist.
Elrica inhaled sharply. "Where did—"
The creature appeared directly in front of her.
Its claw was already mid-swing.
Ryuji moved instantly.
His body reacted before thought, crossing the distance in a blur as he grabbed her by the collar and yanked her backward. The claw tore through the space she had occupied, slamming into the ground with enough force to crack the stone beneath them.
Fragments scattered across the floor.
"Stay behind me," he said calmly, setting her down.
Elrica nodded rapidly, heart pounding as she retreated behind the others.
Kaelina moved in immediately, her sword cutting through the air in a precise arc aimed at the creature's position.
It wasn't there.
Gone again.
Darek cursed under his breath. "It's faster than before."
"No," Lumi said quietly, eyes locked on the shadows. "It's learning."
Ryuji's grin returned.
"Good."
The pressure in the air increased.
Subtle.
Heavy.
Then the shadows split.
Three figures emerged at once, identical in shape and movement.
Darek tensed. "Which one—"
"They're not all real!" Lumi snapped. "Find the core!"
Ryuji didn't hesitate.
He stepped forward and drove his fist into the air.
The impact detonated outward, a shockwave ripping through the chamber and tearing through all three figures at once. Two of them shattered instantly into smoke-like fragments.
The third—
Held.
It flickered violently but didn't disappear.
"…Found you," Ryuji muttered.
The creature lunged.
Faster.
Sharper.
Its claw grazed his shoulder this time, slicing through fabric and skin in a shallow line. Dark residue clung to the wound immediately, spreading like ink beneath his skin.
Ryuji hissed quietly. "…Tch. That stings."
Lumi winced. "Abyss taint. Don't let it sit."
"Yeah, yeah."
The creature struck again.
Ryuji blocked, but the force pushed him back a full step this time, boots grinding against the stone.
Stronger.
He exhaled slowly, rolling his shoulder once despite the sting.
"…Okay," he said. "Now we're getting somewhere."
Kaelina stepped in with perfect timing.
Her blade flashed in a clean, controlled strike, catching the creature along its side. This time the hit connected more solidly, tearing through part of its form and forcing it to flicker violently.
Darek followed immediately, bringing his greatsword down with raw power. The impact slammed the creature into the ground, cracking the stone beneath it.
"Elrica!" Kaelina called.
"On it!"
Light erupted from Elrica's staff, flooding the chamber and forcing the shadows to recoil. The creature let out a distorted screech as its form destabilized further.
Ryuji moved.
No hesitation.
He stepped into its space, closing the distance completely.
The creature lashed out.
He slipped inside the attack, body twisting just enough to avoid the claws.
Then he drove his fist forward.
CRACK.
Bone Breaker activated.
The creature's leg snapped at a grotesque angle.
It staggered.
For the first time—
It reacted.
Ryuji's grin widened.
"There we go."
The creature tried to retreat, its body flickering as it attempted to vanish.
But it was slower now.
Unstable.
Ryuji didn't give it the chance.
He grabbed its arm mid-phase, catching it in that brief moment where it was forced to become solid.
"Got you."
He twisted hard.
SNAP.
The limb shattered completely.
The creature shrieked, louder now, the sound scraping against the walls.
Ryuji pulled it forward, locking it in place for just a second longer.
Then he drove his fist straight into its chest.
BOOOOM.
The shockwave detonated at point-blank range, blasting outward and cracking the ground beneath them. The creature's form collapsed inward before exploding into fragments of shadow that scattered across the chamber.
Then—
Nothing.
Gone.
Silence settled again.
Heavy.
Breathing filled the space.
Dust drifted slowly through the air.
Ryuji rolled his shoulder, wincing slightly before flexing his hand. "Alright… that one actually tried."
Darek let out a long breath. "That was no normal monster."
"No," Lumi said quietly. "It was stronger… and smarter."
Elrica hugged her staff closer. "…It spoke to you."
Kaelina's gaze shifted toward Ryuji, sharp and assessing. "And it targeted you specifically."
"…Why?"
Ryuji shrugged lightly.
"Guess I'm interesting."
The mark pulsed again.
Violently.
Cracks deepened.
The purple veins surged and spread faster, crawling across the chamber like something had been fully awakened.
The system flickered once more.
[Warning]
Abyss Influence Increasing
Environment Destabilizing
Ryuji exhaled slowly.
Then smiled.
"Alright," he said, cracking his knuckles.
"Now this is getting fun."
Lumi stared at him, completely exasperated. "…You are actually insane."
"Probably."
The dungeon rumbled.
Deep.
Heavy.
From somewhere far below—
Something shifted.
And this time—
No one mistook it for anything small.
Whatever was waking up down there—
Was watching them too.
