The rumble didn't fade.
It settled.
Low. Constant. Like something deep beneath the dungeon floor had shifted into a new position and decided to stay there. The vibration crawled up through the stone, subtle but persistent, setting an uneasy rhythm beneath their feet. The purple veins that had spread across the walls now pulsed in sync with it, thicker than before, branching outward like veins in living flesh.
Ryuji rolled his shoulder once, testing the lingering sting where the Abyss taint had grazed him. The burning sensation had dulled, but it hadn't disappeared entirely. It sat beneath the skin, faint and irritating, like a reminder.
"…Yeah," he muttered. "That's gonna get annoying."
Lumi hovered closer, peering at the wound with narrowed eyes. "You're lucky it didn't go deeper," she said. "Abyss corruption doesn't just hurt—it lingers."
Ryuji flexed his hand. "So like a bad debuff."
She paused.
"…Yes."
"Got it."
Darek snorted. "Man just turned cursed energy into a game mechanic."
"It is a game mechanic," Ryuji replied casually.
Kaelina didn't humor it. Her gaze swept the chamber, sharp and focused, taking in every shadow, every movement of the unnatural veins. "We move carefully from here," she said. "That last creature was stronger than the others."
Elrica nodded quickly. "And smarter… it reacted to us."
"Yeah," Darek added, adjusting his grip on his sword. "Didn't just charge in like the rest."
Ryuji cracked his neck, a slow grin returning. "Good."
Lumi groaned. "Why is that always your reaction?"
"Because stronger enemies mean better rewards."
"You are going to get audited by the gods one day."
"Do they give loot?"
"…I hate you."
---
They moved deeper into the dungeon.
The passage narrowed slightly, the walls closing in as the purple veins thickened, clustering in dense patches that pulsed with uneven intensity. The air felt heavier here, each breath carrying a faint metallic tang mixed with something sour, something wrong.
Their footsteps echoed less.
Sound didn't carry properly anymore.
Like the dungeon was swallowing it.
Elrica's staff glowed faintly as she kept a steady flow of mana circulating. "The density's increasing," she said quietly. "It's getting harder to sense movement."
Darek frowned. "Meaning?"
"Meaning things can get close without us noticing."
Ryuji's grin sharpened. "Nice."
Kaelina shot him a look. "Stay focused."
"I am focused."
"On the wrong things."
"Debatable."
Lumi floated beside him, arms crossed. "If you get ambushed again, I'm not saving you."
"You didn't save me last time."
"I warned you!"
"Same thing."
"It is NOT the same thing!"
Darek chuckled under his breath. "You two argue like siblings."
"We are NOT siblings!" Lumi snapped instantly.
Ryuji shrugged. "She's the annoying little sister type."
"I will drop you into the Abyss myself."
"Promises, promises."
---
The corridor opened into a wider chamber.
And the moment they stepped inside—
Everything changed.
The air pressure dropped sharply, like stepping into a vacuum.
The purple veins along the walls pulsed violently.
And the shadows—
Stopped moving.
Not still.
Not calm.
Just… waiting.
Kaelina's voice dropped immediately. "Something's wrong."
Darek nodded. "Yeah. Too quiet."
Elrica tightened her grip on her staff. "I can't sense anything…"
Ryuji stepped forward slowly, eyes scanning the chamber. Broken stone pillars littered the ground, some collapsed, others leaning at odd angles. The floor was uneven, cracked in places, with veins of glowing purple energy running through the fractures like molten lines beneath the surface.
"…It's here," he said quietly.
Lumi didn't argue.
Because she felt it too.
---
A low growl echoed through the chamber.
Not from one direction.
From all around.
Darek turned sharply. "Multiple."
Kaelina raised her sword. "Defensive formation."
They moved instinctively this time.
Darek took the front.
Kaelina angled slightly to the side.
Elrica stepped back.
Ryuji stood just ahead of them, relaxed—but ready.
The first creature emerged from behind a pillar.
A goblin.
But not the kind they had fought before.
Its body was larger, muscles swollen unnaturally beneath darkened skin. Purple veins crawled across its arms and neck, pulsing visibly. Its eyes glowed with a deeper, more intense crimson.
Then another appeared.
And another.
Three.
Five.
Eight.
"…That's a lot," Darek muttered.
Elrica whispered, "They're… different…"
Ryuji's grin returned.
"Yeah."
"Upgraded mobs."
Lumi groaned. "This is not a game raid!"
"Feels like one."
---
The goblins didn't charge immediately.
They spread out.
Slowly.
Positioning.
Kaelina's eyes narrowed. "…They're coordinating."
"Of course they are," Lumi muttered. "Abyss influence enhances aggression and—"
One of the goblins shrieked.
And they moved.
---
The fight erupted instantly.
Two goblins rushed Darek head-on, their movements faster and more controlled than before. He met them with a heavy swing, his blade cutting through one cleanly—but the second dodged, twisting unnaturally and lunging again.
Kaelina intercepted it, her sword flashing in a precise arc that severed its arm before finishing it with a clean thrust.
"Elrica!" she called.
"On it!"
A burst of fire shot forward, catching two goblins mid-charge and forcing them back.
Ryuji stepped forward.
One goblin lunged at him.
He didn't dodge.
Didn't step back.
He stepped in.
His fist drove forward.
CRACK.
Bone Breaker triggered instantly, the goblin's arm snapping on impact.
Then—
BOOM.
Shockwave Punch sent it flying across the chamber, slamming into a pillar hard enough to shatter it.
Darek blinked mid-fight. "…Every time."
"Don't question it," Kaelina replied, cutting down another goblin.
---
More emerged.
From the shadows.
From behind pillars.
From the walls themselves.
They weren't mindless.
They circled.
Pressed.
Tested openings.
One slipped past Darek's guard—
Ryuji caught it mid-lunge, grabbing its face and slamming it into the ground with enough force to crack stone.
"Stay in formation," he said calmly.
"Working on it!" Darek barked, swinging wide to clear space.
Elrica's spells came faster now, more controlled, targeting clusters and forcing enemies back instead of scattering her attacks.
Kaelina adjusted her position constantly, covering openings, redirecting threats.
The team moved.
Not perfectly.
But together.
---
Then the howls came.
Low.
Deep.
From the edges of the chamber.
Ryuji glanced sideways.
"…Ah."
"Here we go."
From the shadows beyond the pillars, shapes emerged.
Wolves.
But larger than before.
Their bodies were lean but stretched, their limbs longer, movements sharper. Their fur rippled with dark energy, and their eyes burned with a steady violet glow instead of red.
Darek exhaled. "Of course there are wolves too."
Lumi groaned. "Mixed enemy types. Fantastic."
Ryuji cracked his neck. "Now it's fun."
"You said that already!"
"And I meant it more this time."
---
The wolves didn't wait.
They moved in sync with the goblins.
One pack circled wide while the others pushed forward.
"They're working together!" Elrica shouted.
"No kidding!" Darek replied.
One wolf lunged low.
Ryuji stepped forward and kicked it mid-air, redirecting its trajectory straight into an approaching goblin. The collision knocked both aside, giving Kaelina the opening to cut them down in one clean motion.
"…Nice setup," she muttered.
"Teamwork," Ryuji replied with a grin.
Lumi blinked. "…Did you just cooperate?"
"Don't get used to it."
---
A wolf darted past Darek, aiming straight for Elrica.
Too fast.
Too close.
She raised her staff—but hesitated.
Ryuji moved.
He intercepted it mid-stride, grabbing it by the scruff and slamming it into the ground.
CRACK.
Bone Breaker shattered its spine.
He didn't stop.
Another punch.
BOOM.
The body slid across the floor, unmoving.
Elrica stared, breathing hard. "…Thank you."
"Stay behind me," he said simply.
---
The fight intensified.
Goblins pressed harder.
Wolves attacked in coordinated bursts.
Darek was forced back a step.
Then another.
Kaelina shifted instantly, covering him, her blade flashing in tight, efficient movements.
"Elrica!" she called.
"Now!"
A surge of light erupted, pushing back the nearest enemies.
Ryuji stepped forward into the opening.
His body moved smoothly now, every motion efficient.
Punch.
Crack.
Kick.
Impact.
Shockwave.
Each strike wasn't just force—it was timing.
Positioning.
Control.
The battlefield shifted around him.
---
Within minutes—
The pressure broke.
The last goblin fell.
The final wolf collapsed.
Silence returned.
---
Darek exhaled heavily, resting his sword against his shoulder. "…That was different."
Kaelina nodded slowly, scanning the room. "They were coordinated."
Elrica lowered her staff, breathing uneven. "Like they were… directed."
Lumi floated lower, her expression serious again. "They were."
Ryuji rolled his shoulders, completely relaxed again. "Good fight."
Darek stared at him. "…You didn't even break a sweat."
"Warm-up."
"…Of course it was."
---
Then—
Something shifted.
At the far end of the chamber.
A wall.
No—
A door.
Hidden beneath layers of stone and purple veins.
It pulsed faintly.
Different from everything else.
Ryuji's eyes locked onto it.
His grin slowly returned.
"…Well."
He cracked his knuckles.
"Now that looks important."
Lumi's expression tightened.
"…That shouldn't be here."
Kaelina stepped forward cautiously. "Everyone stay alert."
The door pulsed again.
Low.
Deep.
Like something behind it had just become aware of them.
And this time—
No one mistook it.
They weren't alone in this dungeon.
They never were.
