MHGA Chapter 283 – The Guildmaster Is Blessed by an Accident!
Kairo Retsu quickly assessed their current situation and surroundings.
Himmel was now officially a wanted man, yet he had still gone out of his way to help villagers deal with monsters—even while being hunted. Truly the mark of a proper Hero. Respect.
But thanks to Aqua's earlier Holy Purification blast, the entire city had lit up like daytime. Even the roosters had started crowing. The whole city, awakened like a nation mourning its beloved, had climbed out from under the covers. The dutiful guards had already begun to mobilize, forming up to rush toward the city wall…
"This was supposed to be the legendary tale of a dead Hero's return and the sweeping away of all evil," Kairo Retsu exhaled. "How did it become this 'wanted criminal' situation instead?"
"It's fine. I believe Frieren will recognize me," Himmel said calmly, showing not the slightest trace of panic.
"..."
Kairo Retsu scratched his head and said to Himmel before the guards arrived, "But what if you appear in front of Frieren right now and she thinks you're some dirty demon trick from Aura's bunch and blasts you with a light cannon?"
"No way. Even if Frieren's aloof, she must've heard about me from the capital by now. I mean, I—" Himmel trailed off, cold sweat forming on his forehead.
After crawling out of his grave, he had eaten and rested entirely at the Gathering Hub, wasting no time en route. He'd rushed straight here at full speed…
And realized: his arrival speed might've actually been faster than any message from the capital.
"I should be able to tank Frieren's attack," Himmel said, bracing himself. "Besides, I probably won't even need to act. Aura is sure to lose to Frieren once the Scales weigh their mana…"
"Nothing unexpected should happen, right…" Kairo Retsu muttered, scratching his hair. He raised his Hunter's Binoculars toward Aura's army—and then paused.
"Why does it look like Aura's army is getting farther away from us?" he said slowly, puzzled.
"No way!" Himmel's eyes widened as he pulled out his own binoculars—only to see Aura and her army turning tail and fleeing from the city.
"Impossible! I just got here! I shouldn't have interfered with the original timeline yet!" Himmel protested. "And Aura should be the one with the advantage on the surface—she shouldn't be able to tell that Frieren's mana is greater than hers. Why would she run?!"
"Exactly! Why would she run?!" Kairo Retsu echoed, clutching his hair in confusion. "What, did some mana monster just drop from the sky and scare her off? There's no way anyone here has that level of magical power!"
As Kairo Retsu and Himmel racked their brains in vain, a voice cut in:
"Boss! I can't hold her up much longer, nya…"
silly cat was struggling to keep the drunken Aqua upright with both of its fat little paws.
With that voice, Kairo Retsu and Himmel slowly turned their heads toward Aqua—who matched every criteria of the "mana monster that scares Aura."
The thought of Aura, the so-called "Guillotine Aura," confidently marching on the city with her undead army—perhaps already encountering Frieren—only to spot Aqua's ridiculous mana level and immediately fleeing in terror…
Fleeing from Aqua…
Aqua…
"I hate accidents," Kairo Retsu murmured, covering his face, nearly in tears. "Why do my plans always go off the rails like this?"
Himmel, on the other hand, grew urgent: "We can't let Aura escape! There's still a chance to save those people she's controlling!"
"Guildmaster! Please bring Miss Aqua with you!" Himmel drew his Sword & Shield from his waist. "I'll go stop Aura from fleeing!"
"Wait—!"
Before Kairo Retsu could even finish, Himmel had already launched himself from the city wall like a shot arrow, sprinting toward Aura's retreating forces. Kairo Retsu was left standing there with silly cat… and one thoroughly drunk goddess.
"How are we supposed to carry Aqua down the wall?! Hunter armor resists fall damage, but Aqua doesn't!" Kairo Retsu groaned, donning his pain mask.
"Boss! I'll do my best, nya!" silly cat said with high morale.
But before either of them could act, a cold voice rang out beside their ears:
"Stop."
Kairo Retsu and silly cat reflexively raised their hands and paws in sync, dropping the passed-out Aqua onto the ground. They turned to see a purple-haired girl hovering in the air—Fern—aiming her staff at them with a stern expression.
"?" Fern blinked in confusion.
After that massive flash earlier, she and Stark had seized the moment when their opponents weakened and managed to eliminate the enemy demons. Now, flying toward the source of the light, she found… a man and a Felyne hauling a sleeping blue-haired girl while carrying a gigantic weapon.
But Fern sensed no magic power from either the man or the Felyne. The one with overwhelming mana was… the girl on the ground.
To Fern, that magic presence felt like she was a tiny hill standing before a towering mountain.
"I surrender!" Kairo Retsu shouted. "I'm not a bad guy! I came to support Frieren! I haven't done anything wrong!"
Fern looked closer and noticed that the beautiful blue-haired girl on the ground wasn't injured—just peacefully snoring away, hugging an empty whiskey bottle.
"You… came to support Lady Frieren?" Fern still didn't lower her guard.
"For real! Look—she's the priestess we brought! We've already got another guy heading toward Aura right now… We need to hurry up and catch up too!" Kairo Retsu raised his hands high. "But the problem is, I can't carry Aqua fast enough. silly cat and I won't make it in time."
Just as Kairo Retsu said this, from the edge of the wall, a quick-footed tomato-topped silhouette popped up and looked around in confusion: "Fern, what's going on—"
Stark had just arrived at the top of the wall when Kairo Retsu lunged forward and grabbed him.
"Perfect! Help me carry Aqua! We've gotta hurry and catch up with Frieren and Himmel…"
"Himmel?"
