The Sanctum opened like a wound within the mountain.
Ancient stone groaned as the massive gates parted, releasing a warm crimson light that spilled into the cavern beyond. It illuminated the frozen walls in shades of gold and scarlet, turning the ice into rivers of liquid fire.
The air was unlike anything Darian had ever breathed.
It carried the scent of ash, molten stone, and something older...
Memory.
He stepped cautiously across the threshold.
Behind him, the heavy doors remained open, yet the sounds of the outside world vanished completely. The howling wind disappeared. The dripping water ceased. Even his own breathing seemed strangely distant.
Only silence remained.
Not empty silence...
Waiting silence.
Serenya followed close behind, her hand resting upon the hilt of her father's sword.
Her voice barely rose above a whisper.
"This place existed before Frostvale."
She looked upward toward the enormous crystal ceiling.
"Before kingdoms."
"Before the Ember Kings."
Darian slowly turned.
The chamber stretched farther than the eye could follow.
Black stone pillars reached toward the ceiling like the trunks of ancient trees. Rivers of glowing magma flowed beneath crystal floors, their fiery veins pulsing rhythmically, as though the mountain possessed a living heart.
At the chamber's center stood a circular platform of polished obsidian.
Suspended above it...
A single ember.
No larger than a human heart.
It floated silently in the darkness.
Every few seconds...
It pulsed.
Once.
Twice.
Like the heartbeat of something asleep.
Serenya lowered her head.
"The Ember Flame."
Darian stared without speaking.
It wasn't large.
It wasn't blinding.
Yet every instinct told him that everything in the chamber revolved around that tiny flame.
Almost without realizing it...
He stepped forward.
"Darian."
Serenya's voice stopped him.
"Be careful."
"I..."
He couldn't explain it.
"It feels familiar."
The ember brightened.
A tiny spark drifted toward him.
Then another.
The warmth wrapped gently around his body.
Not burning.
Welcoming.
He took another step.
The moment his shadow touched the obsidian platform...
The Ember Flame exploded into brilliant golden light.
The Sanctum disappeared.
Darkness swallowed everything.
When light returned...
Darian found himself standing beneath a crimson sky.
Smoke rolled across a battlefield littered with broken banners and shattered swords.
Entire cities burned beyond the horizon.
Thousands of warriors fought beneath rivers of fire.
At the center of the battlefield stood two figures.
One wore brilliant white armor crowned with living flame.
The other stood wrapped in black smoke, carrying a blade forged from darkness itself.
Neither moved.
They simply watched one another.
Then...
The warrior of light slowly turned.
Darian's heart nearly stopped.
The man's face looked...
Like his own.
Older.
Wiser.
His eyes burned with quiet sorrow.
Before Darian could speak, another voice echoed across the battlefield.
"You remember..."
The shadowed warrior lifted his head.
Only glowing eyes could be seen beneath the darkness.
"So..."
"You have finally returned."
The words chilled him.
Returned?
The warrior of light answered.
"No."
"I never truly left."
Their swords collided.
The world shattered.
Mountains split apart.
Fire collided with shadow.
The heavens themselves cracked beneath the force.
Then everything dissolved into blinding light.
Darian gasped.
He collapsed onto one knee inside the Sanctum.
Smoke drifted from his hands.
His entire body trembled.
Serenya rushed to his side.
"Darian!"
She caught his shoulder before he fell completely.
"What happened?"
He struggled to breathe.
"I..."
His voice shook.
"I saw someone."
"Who?"
He looked toward the Ember Flame.
"...someone who looked exactly like me."
Serenya's expression changed.
"What else?"
"There was another."
His hands clenched.
"He called me..."
He hesitated.
"...an old name."
"What name?"
Darian closed his eyes.
"I can't remember."
"It's fading."
Like a dream slipping away.
Serenya slowly stood.
"The Sanctum never shows ordinary visions."
"It reveals truths."
"But not always ones we're ready to understand."
The Ember Flame pulsed once more.
This time...
A narrow stream of golden fire drifted gently toward Darian.
Neither of them moved.
The light circled him once.
Twice.
Then dissolved into his chest.
Pain exploded through every nerve.
He cried out.
Golden light raced beneath his skin like molten rivers.
His heartbeat thundered.
His vision blurred.
For one terrifying moment...
He thought he was burning alive.
Then...
The pain vanished.
Silence returned.
Darian slowly opened his eyes.
The world looked different.
The glowing rivers beneath the floor...
He could feel them.
The ancient fire inside the mountain...
He could hear it.
Not with his ears.
Somewhere much deeper.
He looked toward the ice-covered wall beside him.
His reflection stared back.
Golden light flickered faintly within his eyes.
Not blazing.
Waiting.
Serenya stepped closer.
"The Flame accepted you."
Darian frowned.
"It didn't give me power."
"No."
She smiled gently.
"It recognized you."
Suddenly...
The mountain shook.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Another tremor followed.
This one stronger.
Then...
A distant horn echoed through the tunnels.
Serenya's face drained of color.
"No..."
She hurried toward the entrance.
"They found us."
Darian followed.
The moment they reached the outer passage, voices echoed through the stone corridors.
"Seal every exit!"
"No one escapes!"
Heavy boots thundered across the ancient floor.
Dozens of armored soldiers poured into the tunnels carrying shields marked with the black flame of the Circle.
At their head walked a tall commander clad in pale armor.
Across his breastplate burned the symbol of an eclipsed sun.
Captain Vael.
His cold eyes settled upon Darian.
"So..."
"The heir truly lives."
Serenya stepped forward.
Her sword left its sheath with a brilliant flash of silver.
"You'll go no farther."
Vael smiled.
"I said those same words to your father."
Her eyes blazed.
Steel collided.
The battle erupted.
Circle soldiers surged forward.
Serenya met them head-on, her runed blade dancing through the darkness.
Darian stayed back at first, remembering her warning.
Control the fire.
Do not let it control you.
A soldier rushed toward him.
He raised one hand.
Golden light gathered instinctively in his palm.
Not wild.
Not violent.
Focused.
A narrow stream of flame shot forward, striking the stone before the charging soldier.
The explosion forced the attackers backward without consuming them.
They hesitated.
Fear spread through their ranks.
"The fire obeys him!"
Vael pushed through the confusion.
His sword swung toward Serenya.
She barely blocked the strike.
The force drove her backward across the stone.
"Darian!" she shouted.
He didn't think.
He acted.
The Ember Flame answered.
A wave of radiant heat surged from his body, rolling through the corridor.
The ancient runes carved into the Sanctum walls ignited one after another.
Golden light flooded the chamber.
The soldiers staggered.
Their weapons became too hot to hold.
Vael shielded his eyes.
"Retreat!" he shouted.
"Fall back!"
One by one, the Circle soldiers withdrew into the tunnels, dragging their wounded with them.
Vael was the last to leave.
Before disappearing into the darkness, he fixed his gaze upon Darian.
"This changes nothing."
"The Circle will never stop hunting you."
Then he vanished.
Silence returned.
Serenya leaned heavily upon her sword, breathing hard.
"You spared them."
Darian looked at his trembling hands.
"I... didn't want to become what they think I am."
She smiled.
For the first time in many days...
It reached her eyes.
"Then perhaps Rowan was right."
"You truly are worthy of the Flame."
Far away...
Deep beneath the catacombs of Valebright...
Corvus suddenly stopped walking.
The torch in his hand flared without warning.
Golden sparks danced across its surface before fading into crimson.
He closed his eyes.
"No..."
He whispered.
"It has begun."
Behind him, High Seer Maelra slowly smiled.
"The Ember Flame has accepted its heir."
Corvus's jaw tightened.
His hand closed around the hilt of his runed dagger.
"The race is over."
Maelra's pale eyes gleamed.
"No, Corvus."
"It has only just begun."
