Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: The Siege of Frostvale

The horns of Frostvale answered Corvus's challenge.

Their deep, mournful cries rolled across the valley, echoing from one frozen peak to another until the mountains themselves seemed to awaken. Snow tumbled from distant cliffs as the sound carried through the ancient city.

From the walls, crimson banners bearing the forgotten crest of the Radiant Flame were raised for the first time in twenty years.

Citizens stopped in the streets.

Some stared in disbelief.

Others slowly fell to one knee.

The old symbols had returned.

Inside the hidden sanctuary, Keeper Elyon stood in silence, listening to the echoes of the horns.

"They remember," he whispered.

Serenya tightened the straps on her leather bracers.

"They remember hope."

Outside, warning bells rang from every tower.

The city was preparing for war.

The council chamber of Frostvale had been carved from white stone streaked with crimson crystal. Ancient braziers burned along its walls, their flames casting long shadows across a circular table engraved with the crest of the Radiant Order.

Its doors burst open as Serenya, Darian, Master Aldren, and Keeper Elyon entered.

Eight council elders immediately rose from their seats.

For a heartbeat, no one spoke.

Then an elderly woman stepped forward.

Her silver hair was tied behind her shoulders, and though age had bent her back, dignity still rested upon her like a crown.

Her eyes widened.

"...Serenya?"

Serenya lowered her hood.

"It has been many years, Lady Ysara."

The old woman crossed the chamber without hesitation and embraced her.

"We believed you had fallen with your father."

"I almost did," Serenya replied softly.

When they separated, Lady Ysara's gaze settled upon Darian.

She noticed the faint golden light flickering deep within his eyes.

Emotion softened her weathered face.

"So Rowan truly protected you," she whispered.

"The Ember Heir has finally returned to Frostvale."

One by one, the elders rose completely from their seats. Some lowered their heads in quiet respect, while others simply stared in silent wonder.

For years they had heard whispers that the last heir had survived the Purge.

Few had believed the stories.

Now he stood before them.

Darian shifted uneasily beneath their gaze.

"You don't have to bow."

An elderly councilor smiled gently.

"We do not bow to a prince."

"We bow to the hope that refused to die."

Those words settled heavily upon Darian's shoulders.

For the first time, he truly understood what Rowan had sacrificed to protect.

A detailed map of Frostvale lay spread across the council table.

Red markers covered the western valley.

Master Aldren frowned.

"They're moving faster than expected."

A captain stepped forward.

"Our scouts returned only moments ago."

He pointed toward the western pass.

"Thousands of soldiers surround the valley."

"More arrive every hour."

"They've brought siege engines..."

"...Ash Beasts..."

"...and creatures unlike anything our scouts have ever faced."

Serenya looked up sharply.

"What creatures?"

The captain hesitated.

"They walk on four legs."

"Their bodies appear to be carved from black stone."

"They breathe smoke."

Keeper Elyon's expression darkened.

"Engulfers."

Silence filled the chamber.

Lady Ysara looked toward him.

"I thought those monsters vanished centuries ago."

"So did I," Elyon replied.

"They were forged during the First Sundering."

"They feed upon living flame."

Darian instinctively looked at his hands.

"They feed on fire?"

"They hunt it," Elyon answered.

"The stronger your power grows..."

"...the more fiercely they will pursue you."

High above the valley, Corvus watched Frostvale from a rocky ridge.

His vast army stretched across the snow like a sea of black steel.

Countless campfires burned with unnatural gray flames.

Behind the soldiers stood towering siege engines wrapped in iron chains.

Ash-colored wolves prowled between the ranks while armored riders prepared for battle.

Lady Miren approached quietly.

"The city refuses your offer."

"I expected nothing less."

"Our scouts confirm the boy is inside."

Corvus nodded.

"And the First Keeper?"

She hesitated.

"There is another presence within the city."

Corvus's expression hardened.

"So..."

"Elyon survived."

For the first time in many years...

Concern crossed his face.

"I underestimated the old man."

Night settled over Frostvale.

Blacksmiths worked without rest, sparks flying into the freezing air.

Archers stacked arrows upon the battlements.

Families carried food, blankets, and water into underground shelters.

Priests moved among the defenders, speaking quiet blessings over weary soldiers.

The city had accepted what dawn would bring.

War.

Darian wandered alone through the narrow streets.

Everywhere he looked, ordinary people prepared to defend the only home they had ever known.

An elderly baker handed bread to exhausted guards.

Children helped carry buckets of water.

Neighbors embraced as though it might be the last time.

Near one small house sat a little girl holding a carved wooden bird.

She looked up as Darian approached.

"Are you the fire prince?"

He smiled awkwardly.

"I... don't know."

"My father says you're here to protect us."

Darian's smile faded.

"I hope I can."

The little girl held out the wooden bird.

"For luck."

He accepted it carefully.

"Thank you."

As he walked away, he realized something surprising.

His hands had stopped trembling.

Not because he was no longer afraid...

But because someone believed he could stand against the darkness.

Later that evening, Serenya found him standing upon the eastern wall.

Snow drifted quietly around them.

"You've been avoiding everyone."

"I've been thinking."

"About running?"

He gave a weak smile.

"A little."

She leaned beside him against the cold stone.

"When I was younger..."

"I believed courage meant never feeling fear."

She looked toward the sea of enemy fires glowing beyond the valley.

"My father taught me otherwise."

"What did he say?"

"He said courage is choosing to walk forward..."

"...even while fear begs you to turn back."

Darian stared into the darkness beyond the walls.

"I don't know if I'm ready."

"No one ever is."

She placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.

"But Rowan believed you would be."

She smiled softly.

"And so do I."

Far below the walls...

A single war horn sounded.

Then another.

Then dozens more.

The enemy camp burst into motion.

Ranks of soldiers formed with practiced precision.

Siege towers rolled across the frozen valley.

Gray flames ignited upon thousands of torches.

The siege had begun.

From Frostvale's highest tower, warning bells rang furiously.

"To the walls!"

"To the walls!"

Archers rushed into position.

Massive gates thundered shut.

Serenya drew the Radiant Blade.

Its runes blazed like the rising sun.

Master Aldren climbed the western watchtower.

Keeper Elyon rested both hands upon his ancient staff, whispering prayers older than the kingdom itself.

Across the valley, Corvus slowly raised the Obsidian Brand.

Black fire raced along its edge.

He pointed the sword toward Frostvale.

"Advance."

The army moved as one.

The earth trembled beneath thousands of marching feet.

Snow blackened wherever they passed.

Standing atop the wall, Darian watched the darkness drawing nearer.

His heart pounded.

The Ember Flame stirred within him.

For the first time...

It did not feel wild.

It felt calm.

Purposeful.

As though it had always known this day would come.

He tightened his grip around the little wooden bird.

Then he looked toward the advancing army.

"This city has already lost one kingdom," he said quietly.

"It will not lose another."

Beside him, Serenya lifted her glowing sword toward the dawn.

Golden sunlight broke through the storm clouds at last, washing over Frostvale.

Across the valley, black fire answered with darkness that swallowed the snow.

Two flames.

Two destinies.

One battlefield.

As the first boulder launched from Corvus's siege engines crashed against Frostvale's western wall, the mountain shook beneath the force of the impact.

The Siege of Frostvale had begun.
