The heartbeat echoed again.
Slow.
Steady.
Ancient.
It rolled through the hidden sanctuary like the pulse of the mountain itself, vibrating beneath Darian's feet until the fire inside him answered with a warmth he could no longer suppress. Golden light flickered beneath the skin of his hands before fading once more.
Master Aldren stood unmoving before the massive stone door, his weathered fingers resting upon the carved symbol of the Radiant Flame.
"The mountain has accepted your presence," he said quietly.
Darian swallowed.
"What... is behind that door?"
The old man's expression became solemn.
"The last living guardian of the Ember Flame."
Serenya frowned.
"I thought every Keeper died during the Purge."
"So did the Circle."
Aldren smiled sadly.
"They searched the Sanctum for years, believing they had uncovered every secret."
His eyes drifted toward the ancient door.
"They never discovered this chamber."
"They never found him."
Another heartbeat thundered through the stone.
This time the door itself shimmered.
The carved sword upon its surface began glowing with molten gold.
Darian instinctively stepped closer.
"I know this symbol."
"You should," Aldren replied.
"It belonged to your family long before it became the crest of the Radiant Order."
Silence settled over the chamber.
Serenya looked between the two men.
"You said the First Keeper was waiting."
Aldren nodded.
"He has guarded the true covenant since the First Age."
"The covenant?"
"The promise made between mankind..."
"...and the Flame itself."
Aldren pressed both palms against the door.
The runes surrounding it awakened one after another.
Ancient words flowed across the stone in circles of crimson light.
Then...
The great door slowly opened.
Warm air poured into the sanctuary.
Not the heat of fire.
The warmth of spring after endless winter.
Beyond lay a vast chamber unlike anything Darian had ever imagined.
Its ceiling disappeared into darkness, supported by towering pillars carved with dragons, phoenixes, and warriors bearing flaming swords.
Crystal rivers flowed through the floor.
Instead of water...
Liquid fire.
Golden streams wound silently through channels of black stone, illuminating gardens filled with trees whose silver leaves shimmered like stars.
At the center of it all stood a colossal tree.
Its trunk was black as obsidian.
Its branches burned with golden flames that never consumed the wood.
Thousands of glowing leaves drifted through the air like sparks.
Darian stared in disbelief.
"It's..."
"The Ember Tree," Aldren whispered.
"The first fire given form."
Serenya lowered her head in reverence.
"My father said it was only legend."
"He believed correctly."
Beneath the burning tree sat a single figure.
He appeared impossibly old.
Long white hair rested across robes woven from cloth that shimmered like firelight.
A wooden staff leaned beside him.
His eyes remained closed.
Yet Darian somehow knew...
The old man had been awake the entire time.
Without opening his eyes he spoke.
"You've grown."
The voice was calm.
Gentle.
It carried the weight of centuries.
Darian blinked.
"You... know me?"
The old man smiled.
"I knew you before you drew your first breath."
Serenya's eyes widened.
"Keeper..."
The ancient man slowly opened his eyes.
They burned with pure gold.
No pupil.
No white.
Only living flame.
"I am Keeper Elyon."
"The last Guardian of the First Fire."
He rose with surprising ease despite his age.
Every step caused flowers of flame to bloom beneath his feet before fading into glowing embers.
When he stopped before Darian, he studied him for a long moment.
Then...
He placed one hand over Darian's chest.
The fire beneath Darian's skin surged instantly.
Visions exploded through his mind.
He saw the Ember Kings.
He saw the Radiant Order standing beneath banners of gold.
He saw cities built from living crystal.
Children laughing beside rivers of flame.
Not a kingdom ruled through fear...
But through balance.
Then everything changed.
Darkness spread across the land.
The Hollow Flame was born.
Brother fought brother.
Fire consumed the heavens.
Finally...
One man divided the First Flame into two.
One half became Light.
The other...
Shadow.
Darian cried out as the vision ended.
He staggered backward.
Breathing hard.
"It was true."
Elyon nodded.
"Everything."
"The Hollow Flame wasn't created."
"It was separated."
"The same fire..."
"...given two different hearts."
Serenya slowly found her voice.
"Then Corvus..."
The Keeper looked toward the distant mountains beyond the chamber walls.
"He carries the shadow willingly."
"But he was never meant to."
"He chose it."
"He believed strength mattered more than mercy."
Darian remembered the battlefield from his vision.
The familiar face hidden beneath smoke.
"My brother..."
Elyon looked at him carefully.
"No."
"He is not your brother."
"He is your reflection."
The words hung heavily in the air.
"The First Flame always creates two paths."
"Compassion..."
"Or domination."
"Creation..."
"Or conquest."
"You now walk the path once abandoned."
Suddenly...
A deep rumble shook the sanctuary.
Dust drifted from the ceiling.
The Ember Tree flickered uneasily.
Master Aldren looked upward.
"They're here."
A second tremor followed.
This one stronger.
Far above them...
Church bells began ringing throughout Frostvale.
Not in celebration.
In warning.
Serenya hurried toward the entrance overlooking the city.
Her expression darkened.
"The western gate..."
Columns of black smoke climbed into the sky.
The sound of distant explosions echoed across the valley.
People screamed.
Signal horns answered one another from every tower.
"They've started."
Aldren closed his eyes.
"So soon..."
Darian stepped beside Serenya.
"What is it?"
She pointed toward the horizon.
Beyond the city walls...
An ocean of black banners stretched across the snow.
Thousands.
Perhaps tens of thousands.
Each banner bore the mark of the Hollow Flame.
At their front rode a lone figure upon a massive black horse.
Even from this distance...
Darian recognized him.
Corvus.
He slowly raised the Obsidian Brand toward Frostvale.
The blade ignited with black fire.
At that same moment...
Every torch within the enemy army burst into gray flame.
The entire valley glowed beneath a sea of darkness.
Corvus's voice carried unnaturally across the frozen plain.
"Lords of Frostvale!"
"I have not come for your city."
"I have come for the Heir."
"Surrender Darian..."
"...and no blood need be spilled."
Silence followed.
Then the gates of Frostvale slowly began to close.
War horns thundered from the walls.
Archers took their positions.
Citizens rushed toward shelters beneath the streets.
Serenya drew her sword.
Its runes blazed brighter than ever.
"There'll be blood either way."
Keeper Elyon looked at Darian.
"The Flame has awakened."
"The choice begins now."
Darian watched the army gathering below.
He could have remained hidden.
He could have allowed Frostvale to fight in his place.
But as he looked at the frightened people filling the streets, Rowan's words echoed within his heart.
A true flame gives warmth before it gives wrath.
He tightened his grip.
Not on a sword.
But on the sealed letter that had started everything.
His fear remained.
His doubts remained.
But something else had been born beside them.
Resolve.
He looked at Serenya.
"We're not running anymore."
She met his gaze and smiled for the first time in days.
"No."
"We're not."
Far below, Corvus watched the city walls with unreadable eyes.
Then, almost imperceptibly...
He smiled.
"The game is over," he whispered.
"The war has begun."
