Chapter 11 - Chapter 11 – Whispers in the Council

(Recap)Ethan Cross shattered expectations when he defeated the Goddess's Champion, seizing a victory no mortal should have achieved. For a moment, the world hailed him as chosen, but already shadows gathered. Kael, the king's most cunning noble, had not forgotten the humiliation Ethan brought him. And the gods themselves whispered—one amused, one annoyed, one watching.

The game of fate was far from over.

The Divided Court

The throne hall of Aldoria was a place meant to inspire awe. Its vaulted ceilings were painted with murals of past victories, golden chandeliers gleamed with captured sunlight, and the throne itself was raised on steps of marble and obsidian. Yet today, tension suffocated the air.

Ethan stood at the foot of the throne, his hand resting lightly on the pommel of his blade. His eyes, sharp and unyielding, swept across the assembly of nobles and generals gathered in a semi-circle around the king. He had fought monsters and even divine champions, but this room felt far more dangerous.

Some nobles looked at him with admiration—hope gleaming in their eyes. Others regarded him with thinly veiled contempt, their whispers dripping with venom.

At the center of it all, seated with elegance and cold calculation, was Kael Draven.

Clad in deep crimson robes embroidered with black sigils, Kael looked more like a dark priest than a noble. His lips curved into the faintest smirk when his gaze met Ethan's, as if to say: Welcome to my battlefield.

The King's Voice

King Aldric, broad-shouldered and iron-willed, raised his hand for silence. His crown glinted beneath the chandelier's light as his voice echoed:

"Ethan Cross," the king declared, "you stand before the court not as an outsider, but as the man who defended this kingdom against a divine champion. You have proven your strength. But strength invites fear… and questions."

A ripple moved through the hall. Ethan could hear the nobles murmuring—words like "unnatural," "puppet of gods," "weapon."

He clenched his fists, forcing himself to remain calm.

Kael's Poison

Kael rose smoothly, his every movement precise. "Your Majesty," he said, bowing deeply. "It is undeniable that Ethan fought valiantly. But we cannot ignore the truth of his power. He wields a system unlike any recorded in history. A gift that bends fate itself. Such power does not come without a cost."

He turned toward Ethan, eyes gleaming with false courtesy. "Tell us, stranger… how do we know your strength serves Aldoria, and not the whims of gods who toy with us?"

The words struck like daggers.

Ethan stepped forward, his jaw tightening. "Because when your walls were collapsing, when no one else could stand against the Champion, it was me who fought. Me who bled. Me who chose this kingdom's survival over my own safety. If the gods sought to control me, why would they allow me to defeat one of their own servants?"

Murmurs rose again—some agreeing, others unconvinced.

Kael's smirk deepened. "Or perhaps, Ethan, you were meant to win. Perhaps this is a stage play, and you are the lead actor in a tragedy scripted by gods who find our suffering amusing."

At that moment, a notification flickered before Ethan's eyes:

[ System Notice ][ New Hidden Stat Unlocked: Corruption Counter ][ Current Value: 1% ]

Ethan's heart skipped. The system had never shown this before. He forced his face to remain impassive, but inside, unease gnawed at him.

Corruption? Why now?

Selene's Stand

Before Kael could press further, Selene stepped forward. Dressed in silver armor that gleamed like moonlight, she carried herself with both elegance and fire.

"You speak of fear, Lord Kael," she said, her voice ringing clear. "But fear does not protect kingdoms—heroes do. Ethan has proven himself. To cast suspicion upon him is not caution. It is cowardice."

A murmur of agreement rose from several generals, though others frowned.

Kael's gaze flickered with irritation, though his lips never lost their smile. "Ah, Lady Selene, always the defender. But tell me, when his power grows beyond your control… will you still defend him? Or will you beg us to save you from the monster you embraced?"

The venom in his words struck deeper than a blade. Ethan could feel Selene stiffen beside him, though she did not falter.

A Choice of Silence

Ethan wanted to lash out, to expose Kael's schemes, but the king's expression stopped him. Aldric was watching not just his words, but his restraint.

Damn it. This isn't just about me. It's about how much trust I can inspire.

So he forced his voice to steady calm. "If I ever become a threat to Aldoria, then I will be the first to demand my execution. Until then, my blade serves this kingdom."

Silence hung heavy. Then the king spoke:

"Enough. Ethan Cross will continue his training. He has proven his worth in battle. Let him prove his loyalty in service."

The gavel of authority fell, but the war of whispers had only just begun.

Kael's Whispering Web

That night, as the nobles dispersed, Kael lingered in the shadows of the corridor. His attendant approached, bowing low.

"My lord, some of the houses waver. They see Ethan as both savior and danger."

Kael's eyes glinted cold. "Good. Fear is the soil in which power blooms. Spread the rumor that Ethan's victory was not his own—that it was the gods pulling strings."

He stepped closer to the window, watching the moon rise. His reflection merged with the night, sharp and cruel.

"Soon," Kael whispered, "they will see Ethan not as a savior… but as a weapon. And weapons are meant to be controlled—or broken."

Ethan's Unease

In his chamber, Ethan sat alone, staring at the system interface.

[ Corruption Counter: 1% ]

The number glowed like a curse.

"What the hell does this mean…?" he muttered.

The system pulsed faintly.

[ Warning: The more you bend fate, the more the world resists. ][ Note: Resistance breeds corruption. ]

Ethan's blood ran cold.

So every time I use my power, I'm… corrupting myself?

He leaned back, staring at the ceiling. Selene's words replayed in his mind, her loyalty a fragile anchor against the storm.

But Kael's smirk haunted him.

For the first time since awakening the system, Ethan wondered if victory itself carried a price he might not be willing to pay.
