Chapter 23 - Chapter 22 - Riverside Diner

The convoy slowed.

Gradually.

Not from hesitation—

But from awareness.

The road narrowed as it curved away from the highway, cutting through a thinner stretch of trees. Gravel crunched beneath the tires as Ryan guided the SUV down the side road.

The light was fading.

Fast.

The sky burned in deep orange and red, the last stretch of daylight bleeding across the horizon.

Shadows stretched long across the ground.

And the forest—

Was getting darker.

Ryan's eyes stayed forward.

Unblinking.

Night was coming.

And the first night—

Was always the worst.

Creatures don't hesitate in the dark.

They hunt.

[I remember.]

Iris's voice was quiet.

Not playful this time.

Ryan didn't respond.

His gaze flicked briefly to the mirror.

Marcus.

Still following.

Closer than before.

Good.

Daniel's van held the rear.

The convoy was tighter now.

Instinct.

No one wanted distance anymore.

Inside the SUV, the air felt heavier.

Quieter.

Alice shifted slightly in her seat.

"You're thinking again."

Ryan exhaled slowly.

"Do I do that often?"

"Constantly."

A faint smile tugged at her lips.

"You get this look like you're solving something no one else can see."

Ryan's eyes moved briefly toward her.

"Maybe I am."

Alice studied him.

Longer this time.

"You know more than you're saying."

Ryan didn't answer immediately.

The road curved.

The trees thinned.

Then—

He saw it.

A sign.

Leaning slightly to one side.

Paint chipped.

Letters faded.

Riverside Diner — 1 Mile

Ryan slowed.

Alice leaned forward.

"That's… actually good."

Ryan nodded once.

"It is."

He checked the mirrors again.

The convoy followed without hesitation.

No one questioned it.

That alone said enough.

The SUV turned off the main road.

Gravel replaced asphalt.

The sound shifted.

Sharper.

Rougher.

The trees closed in briefly—

Then opened.

A clearing.

The diner stood alone.

Old.

Weathered.

But still standing.

A flickering neon sign buzzed faintly above the entrance.

RIVERSIDE DINER

The light stuttered.

On.

Off.

On again.

Marcus's truck pulled up beside them.

His window was already down.

"Please tell me this is it."

Ryan stepped out.

Boots hitting gravel.

"It is."

The air felt different here.

Still.

But not empty.

Daniel parked the van.

Doors opened.

People stepped out slowly.

No one rushed.

Everyone looked.

The building.

The windows.

The shadows inside.

Waiting for something to move.

Ryan studied the diner.

Glass windows lined the front.

Some cracked.

Some intact.

Inside—

Dark.

Too dark.

"Stay back," Ryan said.

No one argued.

Marcus grinned.

"Let me guess."

He rolled his shoulders.

"Something's inside."

Ryan nodded.

"Probably."

Marcus stepped forward.

"Good."

Elena moved beside him without a word.

Ryan followed.

The three approached the entrance.

Each step slow.

Measured.

Marcus reached the door.

Paused.

Then pushed.

The hinges screamed.

Rust grinding against rust.

The sound echoed into the darkness.

No immediate response.

Ryan stepped inside first.

The air hit him.

Stale.

Dust.

Old grease.

The smell of something left behind.

Tables sat scattered across the floor.

Some overturned.

Some still standing.

A long counter stretched along the far wall.

Stools lined up.

Unmoved.

Like the world had stopped mid-motion.

Ryan didn't relax.

His eyes adjusted quickly.

Scanning.

Corners.

Gaps.

Movement.

Nothing.

Marcus stepped in behind him.

"Well… this is creepy."

Elena didn't respond.

Her eyes were already moving.

Tracking.

Ryan walked deeper.

Each step deliberate.

The floor creaked softly beneath his boots.

Kitchen.

He pushed the swinging door.

It swayed once.

Twice.

Then stilled.

Metal surfaces.

Cold.

Unused.

Storage.

Empty shelves.

Scattered boxes.

Bathrooms.

Doors opened.

Closed.

Nothing.

Ryan returned to the main room.

Marcus leaned against the counter.

"Not even a surprise attack."

Ryan nodded once.

"Clear."

The tension outside shifted almost immediately.

People began entering.

Slow at first.

Then faster.

The space filled.

Not crowded.

But occupied.

Marcus stretched.

"So."

He looked around.

"This is home now?"

Ryan shook his head slightly.

"Temporary."

He pointed toward the windows.

"We fortify."

That was enough.

Robert stepped forward immediately.

"Right."

Daniel followed.

"Tell us what to move."

Ryan gestured.

"Tables first."

"Block sightlines."

"Then reinforce."

People moved.

Not perfectly.

But with purpose.

Chairs scraped.

Wood dragged across tile.

Heavy tables pushed into position.

Daniel moved toward the kitchen.

Moments later—

Metal panels came free.

Bent.

Shaped.

Pressed over windows.

His movements were clumsy.

But improving.

Robert dragged a freezer unit across the floor.

Muscle.

Weight.

Control.

Marcus stacked furniture.

Fast.

Efficient.

Even Elena joined in.

Positioning things.

Adjusting gaps.

Alice stood near the center.

Watching.

Then—

Her hand lifted slightly.

Vines crept along the floor.

Subtle.

Reinforcing weak points.

The room changed.

Slowly.

From open—

To defended.

Ryan moved through it all.

Watching.

Adjusting.

Not commanding loudly.

Just—

Directing.

Small corrections.

Small movements.

People followed.

Without realizing they were.

Minutes passed.

Then more.

Until—

It was done.

Alice stepped back.

Looked around.

"…That's better."

Ryan nodded.

"It will help."

But his eyes shifted.

To the windows.

To the door.

To the gaps.

If something big finds this place—

He didn't finish the thought.

[I know.]

Iris's voice was quiet.

This won't hold it.

Ryan walked to the front window.

The last light was fading.

The sky darkened fully.

The forest beyond—

Gone.

Swallowed in black.

Alice stepped beside him.

"You look calmer."

Ryan glanced at her.

"I prefer walls."

She smiled faintly.

"That's oddly specific."

Ryan didn't respond.

His gaze stayed outside.

Watching.

Listening.

And then—

It came.

A sound.

Low.

Distant.

A howl.

Not like the wolf.

Deeper.

Longer.

Echoing through the trees.

The diner went still.

Every conversation stopped.

Marcus turned slowly toward the window.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"That's worse."

No one disagreed.

Ryan stepped back.

Set the spear against the wall.

"Rest."

Marcus blinked.

"…Now?"

Ryan nodded.

"I'll take first watch."

Alice frowned.

"You've been going all day."

Ryan shrugged.

"I've had worse."

She stepped closer.

"You don't have to carry everything."

Ryan looked at her.

Really looked this time.

Then—

A faint smile.

"I'm not."

Alice held his gaze for a moment.

Then looked away.

Across the diner—

People settled.

Slowly.

Cautiously.

Sleeping bags unrolled.

Food unpacked.

Whispers replaced silence.

But no one fully relaxed.

Not really.

Outside—

The forest watched.

And the first night of the new world—

Had only just begun.
