Chapter 24 - Chapter 23 - Night at the Diner

The diner settled into quiet.

Not suddenly.

Not completely.

But slowly—

Like something easing into stillness.

Most of the lights had been turned off.

Only a single lantern remained lit near the counter, its small flame flickering unevenly. Shadows stretched long across the room, shifting faintly along the walls with every movement of the flame.

Nothing stayed still for long.

Outside—

Night had fully taken hold.

Ryan stood near the front window.

One hand rested loosely on the shaft of his spear.

The barricaded glass reflected the dim glow behind him—

But beyond it—

There was nothing.

No light.

No movement.

Just black.

Blackwood Forest.

A sound drifted through the trees.

Low.

Distant.

A howl.

Not close.

But not far enough.

Ryan exhaled slowly.

The first night.

In his last life—

This had been the moment everything broke.

Not the Awakening itself.

Not the first monsters.

The night.

When the world went dark—

And stayed that way.

[I remember.]

Iris's voice was softer than usual.

Ryan leaned slightly against the wall beside the window.

Things are quieter this time.

[Because you changed things.]

Ryan didn't answer.

His gaze shifted slightly.

The parking lot.

Empty.

Still.

For now.

Behind him—

Voices.

Low.

Careful.

People were speaking, but no one raised their voice.

Like they were afraid of being heard.

At one of the tables—

Sarah worked carefully, wrapping a bandage around Daniel's forearm.

"You need to stop tightening your muscles like that," she said.

Daniel winced slightly.

"I'm not doing it on purpose."

"You are."

She adjusted the bandage.

Firm.

Precise.

"Your body's not used to the strain yet. You keep forcing it, something's going to tear."

Daniel looked at her, surprised.

"You've handled this before?"

Sarah gave a tired smile.

"No."

She tied the bandage.

"But I've handled people who think they know better."

Daniel huffed quietly.

"…Fair."

Across the room—

Marcus leaned back in his chair.

Arms stretched out.

Like he was trying to convince himself he could relax.

"Still doesn't feel real," he muttered.

Robert sat beside him, crowbar resting against the table.

"It is."

Marcus glanced at him.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

Then—

"You did good today."

Robert snorted.

"I swung a piece of metal."

"You didn't miss."

Marcus grinned slightly.

"That counts."

Robert shook his head.

But the corner of his mouth twitched.

Across the diner—

Elena sat alone.

Cloth in hand.

Blade resting across her lap.

Slow.

Methodical.

She cleaned it carefully.

Each motion deliberate.

Her eyes lifted occasionally.

Toward the window.

Toward Ryan.

Watching.

Marcus noticed.

Of course he did.

He leaned slightly toward Robert.

"See that?"

Robert didn't look.

"See what?"

"She's studying him."

Robert glanced once.

Then back.

"…She studies everything."

Marcus smirked.

"Yeah, but not like that."

Elena didn't react.

But her grip on the cloth tightened slightly.

"I can hear you," she said flatly.

Marcus leaned back.

"Good."

She slid the blade back into its sheath.

Slow.

Precise.

Then stood.

"Then stop talking."

Marcus grinned.

"Make me."

Elena didn't answer.

She walked past him.

Not fast.

Not slow.

Just—

Decided.

Marcus watched her go.

Then leaned back again.

"Oh yeah."

He nodded to himself.

"She definitely likes me."

Robert didn't even look this time.

"You're going to regret that confidence."

"Worth it."

At the window—

Elena stopped beside Ryan.

For a moment—

Neither of them spoke.

They both looked out into the same darkness.

Seeing different things.

"You knew," she said quietly.

Ryan didn't move.

"Knew what?"

"The wolf."

A pause.

"You knew it would go for the others."

Ryan nodded slightly.

"Yes."

Elena turned her head just enough to look at him.

"And Marcus."

Ryan didn't answer.

She continued—

"You knew he'd survive."

Ryan's grip on the spear shifted slightly.

Not tense.

Just—

Aware.

"Marcus is strong."

Elena didn't look convinced.

"That's not what I asked."

Silence stretched.

Ryan's gaze remained on the forest.

"Someone has to control the fight."

Elena crossed her arms.

"You don't react."

A beat.

"You guide."

Ryan said nothing.

Elena studied him.

Longer this time.

"You talk like you've done this before."

Ryan allowed a faint smile.

"Maybe I have."

Elena exhaled quietly.

"…You're not normal."

Ryan glanced sideways.

"Neither is anyone here anymore."

Elena followed his gaze.

Marcus was now trying to balance a spoon on his nose.

"…Fair."

Footsteps approached.

Marcus joined them.

Leaning casually against the wall.

"So," he said, glancing between them.

"What's the verdict?"

Elena raised an eyebrow.

"On what?"

Marcus gestured toward Ryan.

"Him."

Ryan exhaled.

"I'm right here."

Marcus grinned.

"Exactly."

Elena spoke calmly.

"Still suspicious."

Marcus nodded.

"Still useful."

Ryan shook his head slightly.

"You two finished?"

Marcus folded his arms.

"Not even close."

Ryan let out a quiet chuckle.

That—

Caught them off guard.

Marcus blinked.

"…Well, that's new."

Elena tilted her head slightly.

"Unexpected."

Another set of footsteps.

Alice.

She stepped up beside Ryan.

Glancing between the three of them.

"What did I miss?"

Marcus didn't hesitate.

"We're deciding if Ryan is secretly dangerous."

Alice smiled faintly.

"That's not really a question."

Ryan sighed.

"I'm starting to regret helping all of you."

Marcus pointed at him.

"See? That right there."

Alice leaned lightly against the wall.

"You do act like you know more than you say."

Ryan looked at her.

For a moment—

The mask slipped.

Just slightly.

Then—

"It helps."

Alice held his gaze.

Didn't push.

Didn't question.

"…Okay."

That was enough.

Marcus stretched.

Glanced toward the dark window.

"If something tries to kill us tonight—"

He yawned slightly.

"—wake me up."

Ryan smirked faintly.

"That's the plan."

The group began to drift.

Back to their spaces.

Slowly.

No one rushed.

No one fully relaxed.

Elena returned to her table.

Marcus dropped into a booth.

Robert followed.

Alice lingered.

Just a second longer.

"You should rest too."

Ryan shook his head.

"I will."

A pause.

"Later."

Alice studied him.

Then smiled faintly.

"Try not to solve everything tonight."

Ryan chuckled quietly.

"I'll try."

She turned.

Walked away.

The diner settled again.

Quieter now.

Ryan turned back to the window.

The forest remained still.

But not empty.

Never empty.

Time passed.

Slow.

Measured.

Then—

[You're smiling.]

Ryan didn't move.

Am I?

[Yes.]

A faint pause.

Ryan's grip shifted slightly on the spear.

I forgot what this feels like.

[What?]

Ryan's eyes softened slightly.

Not the world.

Not the danger.

The people.

[Ah.]

Outside—

Something moved.

Deep within the trees.

Subtle.

But real.

Ryan's grip tightened.

Just slightly.

The night had only begun.

And Blackwood—

Was awake.
