After helping Bucky get the materials he needed for his science project, the two head toward the campus observatory, the base and residence of the Nerds, using the library path.
Then, after a few minutes waiting outside, Jimmy sees Bucky coming out of the observatory, balancing a pile of parts on top of a skateboard deck wrapped in plastic.
"When they said you hadn't ridden it, I thought you had at least assembled the skateboard", Jimmy comments when he sees that Bucky hadn't even tried to put the damn skateboard together.
"Well, I would've put it together, but this deck is so beautiful that I was afraid of putting it together wrong and ruining it! Anyway, everything here is top of the line. I researched like crazy before buying it", making up an excuse, Bucky says as he hands everything he was holding over to Jimmy. Basically, this idiot spent a shitload of money for nothing.
Sitting down on the cobblestone ground in front of the observatory, Jimmy mutters while checking to see if he had everything he needed to assemble the skateboard, only to realize he would need a blade. "Hmm… everything's here… do you have a box cutter?"
"I've got one in my room…", Bucky replies while pointing over his shoulder toward the observatory.
"Bring it here, I'm putting this beauty together right now", Jimmy says as he runs his hand over the deck's artwork. It was a blue cyclops monster, all wrinkled, shaped like a pickle, and wearing an orange beanie.
When Bucky comes back with the box cutter, Jimmy has already applied the grip tape to the deck, removed the bubbles, and marked the edges where it should be cut.
"Here", Bucky hands him the box cutter and watches with interest as he precisely cuts the excess grip tape.
Jimmy then sands down the cut edges using the excess grip tape he had just trimmed with the box cutter before drilling the bolt holes where the trucks would go.
Once that's done, he flips the deck over, bolts on the trucks, puts the bearings into the wheels, and finally installs the wheels onto the skateboard using the T-shaped multi-tool, finishing the assembly.
"You know how to skate?", Bucky asks when he sees how naturally Jimmy pops a stationary kickflip as soon as he steps on the board.
"Yeah, I skated a few times in the past, but I never owned one! Looks like I've still got a knack for it", Jimmy comments as he pushes with his back foot and starts cruising around the small cobblestone area in front of the observatory.
"Well, I guess that's it, the skateboard's yours! Thanks for the help, by the way!", not really knowing how to continue the conversation, Bucky decides to say goodbye.
"It's all good, see you another day! Oh, and I'm keeping these tools here", Jimmy says goodbye somewhat distractedly, only to call Bucky a few seconds later to let him know he'd be keeping the two tools that were used to assemble the skateboard.
Seeing Bucky nod to indicate that it was fine, Jimmy steps off the skateboard and grabs it by the deck in a fluid motion before leaving the area and heading back to the boys' dorm.
As soon as he gets back near the main campus building, Jimmy steps onto the skateboard while moving and starts pushing to gain speed, doing combos with the tricks he remembered knowing how to pull off throughout the entire ride back to the dorm.
With his muscle memory working at full throttle, Jimmy quickly reaches the dorm, where Algie and Melvin were still waiting for him.
So, to finish things off with a flourish, Jimmy, already fully comfortable on the skateboard, challenges himself a bit, landing a clean Semi Flip before skidding and coming to a stop right in front of the two Nerds.
"Wow, that was cool!", Algie comments, impressed.
Chuckling a bit, Jimmy comments out loud as he steps off the skateboard, "Who would've thought, I managed to land a Semi Flip with the same ease as back then! It doesn't even feel like it's been a year since I last skated!"
Pulling off an intermediate/advanced trick like a Semi Flip after a year without touching a skateboard was, at the very least, a notable feat.
"So, everything good?", Melvin asks, wanting to know how things went with Bucky.
"Yeah, everything's fine! And by the way, you were right, the Bullies were intimidating Bucky! But I already handled things and helped him get the parts for that project you mentioned", Jimmy answers Melvin before turning to Algie and speaking.
"And where is he?", Algie asks, confused.
"We went to the observatory to get the skateboard! So he just stayed there", Jimmy says, explaining why Bucky wasn't with him.
"Well, I guess that's it then! Thanks for the help, Jimmy! See you around", Melvin then tries to say goodbye and leave, with Algie awkwardly following him, but Jimmy immediately notices his intention.
"Uh-uh, where do you think you're going? We're friends, but I'm not anyone's babysitter! Where's the money you guys promised me?", stopping them before they could escape without paying, Jimmy questions them with a serious look, which seemed very scary to the two of them.
Shaking with fear and laughing nervously, Algie awkwardly says while checking his pockets for money, "Uhh, right, the money, haha… ha! I almost forgot… uhh, I've only got twenty bucks."
"That works, see you around!", quickly grabbing the money, Jimmy says goodbye before hopping on his skateboard and starting to ride around the area in front of the dorm.
"Alright, bye, Jimmy!", scratching the back of his neck awkwardly, Algie says goodbye before hurriedly leaving with Melvin.
After that, Jimmy spends another hour skating in front of the dorm, trying to land all the flatground tricks he knows and succeeding at them.
Not wanting to overdo it and spend the entire rest of the day skating, Jimmy goes back to his room to continue working on his comic, deciding not to visit the old man that day.
