The Merry Go had been sailing across the sea for several days.
As usual, Zoro was lifting heavy weights on one side of the deck, and Chopper was lying behind him, enjoying the breeze created by Zoro's swings like an improvised electric fan.
Sanji was in the kitchen preparing ingredients and brewing a drink he planned to present dramatically.
Usopp sat off to the side tinkering with his weapons.
Robin lounged on a chair reading a book.
Nami, meanwhile, stood with her arms crossed, staring speechlessly at Luffy and Sandy on the deck.
"Sandy, stop sleeping! Get up and play with us!" Luffy whined, shaking him.
Sandy rolled over. "Huh? Quit bothering me. Just sleep… don't annoy me… zzz…"
Nami sighed. "He's such a pig."
Seeing Sandy wasn't getting up, Luffy ran to Nami.
"Nami, how about we play poker?"
"No," she replied flatly. "I need to watch our course. We are not getting thrown off track like last time."
"What does that matter? I'm so bored! Come on, Nami, just one game!"
Usopp walked over at the perfect time. "Hahaha! How can you play without me? Let's all play."
Chopper's ears twitched. "Poker? I'm in!"
And so, the poker match began—forcing Sandy to sit up with the look of a man personally wronged by the universe. How could anyone sleep with this noise?
Reluctantly, Sandy joined them.
"Hahaha! I have four Threes!" Usopp announced with one card left. "Didn't expect that, did you, Sandy? I even have a Bomb! If you don't play anything, I win!"
Sandy blinked lazily. "Usopp… you're forcing my hand. I have five Threes."
Chopper froze. "Wait… aren't there only four Threes in a deck?"
Luffy nodded seriously. "Why not? Is it weird for Sandy to have five Threes?"
Usopp stared at him. "You haven't played a single card yet! Do you even know how to play?!"
"I thought the more cards you have, the stronger you are," Luffy said proudly.
Usopp facepalmed. "Sandy. Explain yourself."
Nami flicked her hair. "He's cheating, obviously. Don't forget he has that spatial backpack."
The moment she finished talking, Chopper and Usopp jumped on Sandy.
"LISTEN TO MY SOPHISTRY—NO, MY EXPLANATION—wait, don't hit me—NAMI, YOU BASTARD!!"
"Sanji! Pull them off!" Sandy shouted.
Sanji appeared instantly, hearts in his eyes. "Nami-swaaan~ here's the beauty drink I made for you—"
And in the next second, his face turned cold. "Usopp, Chopper—beat him harder."
Before he finished, Sandy's slipper flew into Sanji's face.
Sanji burst into flames. "YOU LITTLE—!!"
Naturally, Sanji joined the brawl.
Naturally, Luffy joined the brawl because it looked fun.
Zoro walked over for a drink, saw the chaos, snorted, and walked away—
Until a slipper (thrown by Luffy) hit him on the back of the head.
Everyone froze.
Zoro's eyebrow twitched. "You bastards…"
He was ready to charge in, but—
"Stop it! We're almost at the island!" Nami yelled.
Instant silence.
Robin arrived just in time to see their messy hair and bruised faces.
She giggled, covering her mouth. "We should be going ashore soon. Why not tidy up a bit?"
"Tidy up?" Everyone looked at each other.
Every single one of them had transformed into some kind of deranged bird's nest.
Sandy laughed. "Hahaha! Sanji, this is the handsomest you've ever looked."
Ignoring him, Luffy—his own hair sticking up like a storm—patted Sandy's head and said seriously, "Idiot Sandy… your hair looks even worse than mine."
Ashore
After landing, Luffy walked ahead proudly.
Usopp stared at him and choked back laughter. "Pfft—nothing, nothing."
Zoro turned away instantly. He could not mentally process Luffy's hairstyle.
Sanji trembled. "No, really, Luffy… this is the handsomest I've ever seen you."
"Really?" Luffy grinned. "Hehehe! I have to thank Sandy. He did my hairstyle."
And then Nami held up a mirror.
Luffy stared.
Sweat dripped down his forehead.
"WHO IS THAT?!"
"That's you, idiot."
Luffy screamed, "SANDY! ONE-ON-ONE! RIGHT NOW!"
Sandy sighed and fixed Luffy's hairstyle back to normal. If anyone saw their Captain like that, the crew's dignity would evaporate on the spot.
An Old Acquaintance
"Everyone," Sandy said suddenly, his brows tightening. "We've got company… an old acquaintance."
"Someone you know?"
"Is it someone from your hometown?"
"Oh? I'd like to meet Sandy's fellow countryman."
From what Sandy picked up with Observation Haki, the man in the forest was ridiculously strong.
And judging by the frozen ground, bicycle tracks, and lingering ice—
There was only one possibility.
Marine Admiral Aokiji.
Sandy's stomach tightened.
He remembered telling Garp he wouldn't become a pirate.
And here he was, vice-captain of the Straw Hat Pirates.
If it really was Aokiji, how was he supposed to face him?
Sandy finished adjusting Luffy's hair and said calmly.
"No need to panic. He's strong, but he doesn't seem hostile. Let's go check it out."
Zoro nodded. "We need supplies anyway."
Luffy grinned. "Alright, everyone—let's go!"
Sandy followed with a complicated expression.
