In the forest, beneath a large rock, Aokiji stood sleeping upright—drool and all.
He had come here after reading a report that a ship had wrecked near this island a month ago.
At the same time, intelligence suggested that the Straw Hat Pirates had passed through this area.
So he came alone—partly to check on the survivors, partly to see that annoying kid he met last year, and also to check in on the grandson of his former superior and teacher, Vice Admiral Garp… not to mention the orphan from Ohara he let escape over twenty years ago—Nico Robin.
However, one thing puzzled him.
Using Observation Haki, Aokiji sensed someone among the incoming group whose aura was unusually powerful.
Of course, he never would've guessed it belonged to Sandy.
Last year, Sandy was just an ordinary civilian with no combat ability to speak of…
Meanwhile, the Straw Hat Crew followed the bicycle tracks through the forest.
Usopp frowned. "That's weird. Who rides a bicycle on an uninhabited island?"
Sanji shook his head. "There's no one here. How would there be bicycles?"
Sandy chuckled. "What's strange about it? With his abilities, riding a bicycle is nothing. He's a genius."
Zoro glanced at him. "From what you said earlier, is there really a Marine Admiral here?"
"Whoa—whoa—" Usopp trembled. "If a Marine Admiral is here, m-maybe we shouldn't go?"
Chopper tilted his head. "Are Marine Admirals really strong?"
Luffy also looked curious. "Robin, are they strong?"
Robin froze, staring ahead as if seeing something no one else could.
Chopper blinked. "Robin? Are you okay?"
"No… nothing," she said stiffly, clearly terrified.
Sandy took her hand gently. "Is it really necessary to be this scared? Don't worry. I'll protect you."
Then he turned to Luffy and the others.
"You guys are on your own."
"Boo! Perverted Sandy!"
"Bastard, let go of Robin's hand—OW!!"
Robin finally spoke. "Marine Admirals… Navy Headquarters has only three of them. They're the Marines' highest combat force."
"Highest combat force?!" everyone shouted.
Usopp swallowed hard. "Sandy… compared to them, how strong are you?"
Sandy scratched his head. "Overall strength? Probably not comparable. But if I find an opening… it's hard to say."
Sanji scoffed. "Stop bragging."
Sandy laughed. "Relax. Like I said, the person up ahead is most likely someone I know. Ahh… I feel nostalgic. Those days sailing with Luffy's Grandpa—that unreliable old man—and Aokiji…"
"Monkey D. Garp?" Sanji asked.
Sandy and Luffy both shuddered at the name. Their scalps tingled.
Zoro eyed them suspiciously. "What's wrong with you two? Why look so terrified just hearing Garp's name?"
Sandy looked dead inside. "How could we not be scared? Does a normal person use mountains as punching bags? He flattened eight mountains with his bare hands."
"No way!!"
"He's the one who cornered the Pirate King—Gol D. Roger? That's insane!"
"No wonder you two reacted like that…"
Sandy nodded. "That old man loves hitting people's heads with his fist. Terrifying. And I'm telling you—Luffy's Grandpa fights you head-on. You don't get to choose."
Luffy held his head miserably. "Sandy, let's not talk about him…"
Talking as they walked, the group soon exited the forest and saw an open grassy plain.
In the middle stood a huge rock.
Leaning against it—sleeping upright—was Aokiji, wearing an eye mask and drooling.
"This guy is so tall!" Luffy shouted.
Aokiji was nearly three meters tall. Luffy wasn't even 175 cm. Of course he was huge.
Seeing Aokiji sleeping standing up, Sanji asked quietly, "Sandy… you really know him?"
Before Sandy could answer, Robin collapsed onto the grass in fear. Nami rushed to help her up.
"Ara la…" Aokiji removed his eye mask. Spotting Chopper, he blinked.
"Raccoon?"
"I'm not a raccoon, you idiot! I'm a reindeer!" Chopper snapped.
Sandy stepped forward with a grin. "Brother Aokiji! Long time no see. You look as heroic and righteous as ever."
He tossed Aokiji a can of beer.
Aokiji's eyes lit up. "Yo ho?"
He knew the kid was unreliable—claiming "years" when it hadn't even been that long—but "heroic and righteous" sounded nice. And he brought him a drink.
Aokiji scratched his cheek. "So it's you, Sandy. You've exceeded my expectations… Hmm? What was I going to say?"
Everyone: "..."
Aokiji opened the beer, lay down lazily, and took a sip.
"If I can't remember, then forget it."
Usopp whispered, "Sandy… he's really a Marine Admiral? Are Admirals like this?"
Nami frowned. "How can he forget what he wanted to say in one second?"
"La laa…" Aokiji muttered lazily, "Don't judge people by appearances. My motto is Lazy Justice, Laa la."
Nami raised an eyebrow. "What's that supposed to mean?"
Aokiji turned to her with a straight face.
"You're a truly beautiful woman. Are you free tonight?"
Sanji exploded instantly. "WHAT'RE YOU SAYING, YOU TALL FREAK?!"
Usopp panicked. "Sanji! Calm down! He's a Marine Admiral!"
Sandy slapped Aokiji's arm and laughed. "Brother Aokiji, I didn't know you were like this. Anyway—why are you on this uninhabited island?"
Luffy added, "Maybe he got lost like Zoro and can't find his way home."
Veins popped on Zoro's forehead. "LUFFY, YOU BASTARD!!"
"Lalaa…" Aokiji said. "A ship had an accident a month ago, so I came to patrol. Hmm? What was I thinking? Oh, you asked me—"
Sandy cut in casually, "That the beer is great."
Aokiji snapped his fingers. "Right, right. That's what I was going to say."
Luffy immediately sat beside Sandy. "Sandy! I want some too!"
Usopp stared. "They really are old acquaintances…"
Sandy sighed. "Brother Aokiji, shouldn't you have come earlier? After a month, were you planning to collect their corpses?"
Then he turned to the forest and called out.
"How long are you going to hide? The Marine Admiral is here to save you."
Everyone turned—and dozens of civilians slowly walked out.
Old people, young people, children… all of them tired and dirty, but alive.
