Chapter 160 - Chapter 159: Luffy’s Values

"Navy?"

The refugees hiding behind the bushes exchanged glances and slowly walked out.

One of the older men stepped forward and asked cautiously, "Are you really from the Navy? If you'd said so earlier…"

Nami immediately asked, "Who are these people?"

These dozen or so people were dressed in tattered clothes, some with bandages or untreated wounds. Their faces were pale with hunger.

Sanji stepped forward in concern. "Hey, hey, pull yourselves together!"

Usopp asked, "Are they the shipwrecked passengers?"

Aokiji, still lying lazily on the grass, answered, "Yeah. They're probably the survivors who drifted here after the shipwreck."

Sandy, sitting beside Aokiji, couldn't help sweating.

What was wrong with the Straw Hats? Nami walked over to comfort the kids, Chopper rushed straight in to treat the injured, and none of them hesitated even a little?

At that moment, Luffy asked, "What's wrong, Chopper?"

Chopper turned back. "Some are injured, but it's nothing serious. They'll be fine after taking the medicine I brought. They haven't eaten much, though, so their bodies are really weak."

"Hey, hey." Sandy stared at them, speechless. "I mean… what exactly are you guys doing?"

Everyone turned to look at Sandy.

Sandy said, "Are you the Navy? When I was starving, I didn't see any of you be this nice to me. Why are you treating strangers better than your own crewmate?"

Nami put her hands on her hips. "Sanji and Usopp already went to look for food. You go too."

"I'm not going," Sandy said, lying down beside Aokiji.

"If you're so warm-hearted, maybe you should've joined the Navy instead of becoming Pirates. What kind of Pirate behaves like this?"

"Oh?" Aokiji smiled lazily. "Then tell me, what should Pirates be like, little brother Sandy?"

Sandy replied, "Pirates? They eat when they want, sleep when they want, live freely. And most importantly—if someone feeds them, Pirates don't pay, right?"

Everyone's faces darkened instantly.

"Enough nonsense," Nami snapped. "Go find food. Now."

"But the grass is so comfortable…" Sandy muttered. "Can't I rest for five minutes?"

"Rest?" Nami kicked Sandy so hard he tumbled away. "Our stomachs won't rest, and we're out of food on the ship too!"

"…Fine."

Sandy wandered into the forest, completely depressed.

Those refugees were clearly seeking help from the Navy. What did that have to do with the Straw Hat Pirates?

What if someone blamed them?

What if this turned into trouble?

Wouldn't that force him to break his own rules?

Sigh… In this era, it was hard to be a good person—and apparently just as hard to be a Pirate. Maybe that weirdo Ohm from Skypiea was right: maybe dying early and reincarnating wasn't such a bad idea.

"Looking for food? I'll sleep first," Sandy muttered.

He climbed onto a tree trunk and drifted into a deep sleep. With enough sleep, his Observation Haki and mental sharpness had been improving rapidly.

But soon, laughter from the grasslands woke him up. Unable to fall asleep again, he gave up, hunted some prey, and returned to the group.

When Zoro saw Sandy return with a sour expression, he asked, "What's wrong with you?"

Sandy whispered, "Look, we're Pirates, right?"

Zoro nodded. "Yeah. Problem?"

Sandy pointed at the scene:

Sanji grilling food for the refugees, Chopper treating them, Nami comforting kids, and Luffy… freeloading.

Sandy said, "Are we still Pirates? With the Navy right here? Aren't you worried they're laughing at us? The Navy, other Pirates, civilians—everyone?"

Zoro paused. He finally understood.

The Straw Hats were going way above and beyond.

But he shrugged. "Too much trouble." Then he sat down and ignored it.

Sandy also flopped onto the grass, helpless.

At that moment, Luffy—still eating—suddenly remembered something and turned to Aokiji.

"Oh yeah! I forgot to ask—what are you even here for?"

Aokiji sighed. "I told you already. I'm on a walk."

"What?" Luffy blinked, then pointed away. "If you're just walking, then don't walk over here. Go walk somewhere else!"

Aokiji looked at him like he was an idiot. "You're reckless, as always. Alright. But before I go…"

He looked at the refugees.

"All of you get ready to leave. There's an inhabited island nearby."

Luffy shouted, "Don't listen to him! He's Navy!"

Sandy finally snapped. He stood up and smacked Luffy with Nami's signature Snake Shot technique.

"You idiot! What's in your brain? To civilians, the Navy is justice. Pirates are the bad guys! And you, as the Captain, are competing with the Navy for humanitarian work?

Do you have any idea how embarrassing that is? Where do you expect the Navy to put their face?"

"Ooh!" Luffy clapped his fist into his palm. "So to the world, the Navy are the good guys, and Pirates are the bad guys?"

Then he saluted Aokiji.

"Sorry!"

Everyone went dark again.

Weren't you trying to fight him earlier? Why are you apologizing now!?

Usopp asked Aokiji, "You told them to leave, but there's no ship big enough for them!"

Robin said softly, "If it's him… he can manage."

A moment later, after Aokiji and Luffy helped gather supplies for the refugees, Aokiji stretched lazily.

"Working occasionally isn't bad."

Luffy grinned. "Feels pretty good! You're really easy to talk to!"

"Tch." Sandy looked away. "Unbelievable."

Nami rolled her eyes. "They're getting along well. What's your problem? Are you jealous?"

Sandy ignored her.

This was beyond embarrassing.

Luffy, sitting on the pile of supplies, asked, "So what now? You going to drag them across the sea like this?"

Aokiji sighed, set down his coat, and walked toward the shore.

"How could that be possible?"

His hand touched the seawater.

"Everyone, step back."

Sandy focused sharply.

Aokiji's aura—his movements—everything showed almost zero restriction from the seawater.

And most importantly—

Aokiji was an awakened Ice-Ice Fruit user.

Aokiji spread his palm.

"Ice Age!!"

A wave of freezing cold exploded outward.

In an instant, the entire sea surface transformed into a massive glacial field.

It was one thing to read it in the manga.

But seeing it with his own eyes—

It was on another level entirely.

Even Sandy was stunned.

Let alone the Straw Hats.

Let alone the civilians.

After sending the refugees off, the mood changed.

Because as a Marine Admiral…

Aokiji had no reason to let Pirates go.

Trouble had finally arrived.
