TRANSITIONING FROM A HERO TO A VILLAIN
Chapter 3: Transition's Real Name
My name is Derek Davidson.
I'm twenty-one years old.
And according to the world, I'm a supervillain.
Ever since I became a villain, I've been hiding in Metropolis.
Not in the rich parts.
Not in the beautiful parts.
I live in the dirtiest part of the city.
The slums.
Nobody expects a supervillain to hide there.
That's exactly why I chose it.
I've been keeping a low profile, but becoming a villain has changed me.
I've gained confidence.
I've gained style.
I've even gained a little swag.
I don't look or act like the hero I used to be anymore.
That person is gone.
Now I'm Transition.
One night, I kidnapped a government official and his family.
I brought them to an abandoned warehouse far away from the main streets.
The official looked around nervously.
"You won't get away with this."
I smiled.
"That's what everyone keeps saying."
"Superheroes will come and stop you."
I laughed.
"Doesn't matter where they come from."
I stepped closer.
"I'll just swap locations."
The official stared at me.
I continued.
"In fact, I could transition this entire warehouse to somewhere on Earth that no human being could ever track."
I paused.
"Or I could transition you somewhere else."
His expression changed.
"I could send you somewhere extremely dangerous, and you would have no way of getting back."
I smiled.
"So let's stop wasting time."
I wanted information about something called the Cripo Project.
It was a secret government project connected to the mutations that had occurred among victims in Nazareth, Israel.
I wanted to know what the government was hiding.
The official refused to talk.
"You won't get anything from me."
I looked at him.
Then I looked at his family.
"Think carefully."
He remained silent.
But eventually, he realized I wasn't bluffing.
He gave me the information I wanted.
I listened carefully.
Then I asked one final question.
"Is that everything?"
He nodded.
I stood there silently.
There was one problem.
He had seen my face.
I wasn't wearing a mask.
If I allowed him and his family to leave, they could identify me.
That could expose my identity and make investigating the Cripo Project much more difficult.
I couldn't allow that.
I transitioned the information and evidence to another location.
Then I left the warehouse.
The family never made it out.
As I walked through the darkness, I remembered the person I used to be.
The hero who would have shown them mercy.
The hero who believed everyone deserved another chance.
I pushed the memory away.
That person was dead.
My name was Derek Davidson.
But the world knew me as Transition.
And now I had something more important than revenge.
I had a mystery to solve.
What exactly was the Cripo Project?
And why was the government hiding its connection to the mutations in Nazareth?
Whatever the answer was...
I was going to find out.
