CHAPTER 36: THE RAIN AND THE TRUTH
CALEB'S POV
We finally moved on to Ian's ledger…..
The medical ledger sat on the table and nobody touched it after Varrin finished reading.
Varrin was the first to speak. He'd been a junior healer back then — low ranking, invisible, the kind of person senior staff talked around because they assumed he wasn't listening. He remembered the rumors from the lower wards. A child born in the middle of the border fires, total chaos, everyone either bleeding out or fighting. The nursery had been off-limits and nobody asked why.
"The infant was weak," Varrin said. "Too quiet. And the skin — they whispered about black veins. Faint, like ink under parchment. The official log said the child died at midnight." He tapped the page. "This says *transferred*."
Nobody spoke.
